My name is Joey and I have 2 bachelor's degrees and a Master's in Education. In my undergrad, I majored in Psychology and Religious Studies while also studying American Sign Language. I have obtained my MEd in Teaching and Teacher Education. I am currently certified to teach both in Washington state as well as in my home state of Arizona. Through Washington State, I am currently certified to teach Visual Arts, English Language Learning, as well as Social Studies. My endorsement for English Language Arts is currently pending.
For the past 2 years, I have worked as an American Sign Language teacher and was even the head of my department. I am committed to working with student's strengths and using those strengths to obtain and learn the material that they are struggling with. As an educator, my main goals are to be able to create a safe space for all neurotypes and marginalized communities and to be able to meet students where they are rather than assuming their background knowledge.
Looking into my teaching philosophy, I believe in equity in education along with fostering a growth mindset. I want my students to feel supported as well as understand that learning comes with making mistakes and growing from them. As a high school teacher, I have been able to work with a variety of different students, each with their own learning style. One of my beliefs as a teacher is that practice makes progress, not perfect. Many students are under a lot of pressure to succeed the first time but I know that you have to be mediocre at something before you can become good or even great at it.
I have taught full time for 2 years and spent 1 year as a student teacher. In the courses I taught, I had 20-39 students per class and I held after school tutoring hours for 1:1 help with the content. Both of these jobs were at the high school level but previous to that, I worked as a tutor for college algebra during University of Arizona's New Start program. In the New Start program, I also worked with students 1:1 through Zoom.
