I'm Rachel! I specialize in helping students transform their unique stories into compelling personal statements that showcase their individuality, strengths and aspirations. I also have extensive experience with grant and fellowship writing and editing.
For personal statements, my goal is to leave the reader feeling connected to the student and confident that this student will succeed in their program. By doing so, I help students maximize their chances of acceptance to top colleges, grad/med programs or in securing competitive graduate fellowships.
About me:
I hold a bachelor’s degree in Biology with minors in Chemistry and Anthropology from the University of San Diego and a PhD in Cell & Molecular Biology from the University of Texas at Austin (UT). My graduate research focused on how genes are regulated during embryonic development, which was supported by a competitive NIH graduate research fellowship. My PhD work resulted in several publications in top peer-reviewed journals and provided me numerous teaching and mentoring opportunities, including earning UT’s College of Natural Sciences Teaching & Mentoring Certificate. Following my PhD, I joined a top cancer research institute as a postdoctoral fellow, where I’ve secured a prestigious postdoctoral fellowship and several research grants from various funding agencies. In addition to research, I am enthusiastic about science communication and have 3 years of experiences as a science writer and editor, producing over 70 online articles.
My process:
I begin with a consultation (virtually) to discuss goals and current draft status. I then provide edits and feedback on drafts and will work through 2-3 rounds of revisions, with brief meetings as needed, until we achieve an impactful final product that the student and I feel proud of.
