About Kaida

Bio

Hi, I'm Kaida (she/her)!

I have a Bachelor's Degree in Computer Science from the University of Washington.

I graduated in 2011 and started my career in the tech industry. After spending about 7 years in industry (I worked at one of the big tech companies in the Seattle area and two mid-sized tech companies) I decided that it was time for a change and since I enjoyed TAing and helping friends understand subjects in our study groups I decided to give teaching a try.

I taught Scratch and HTML at an after-school program for elementary school students around the Seattle area. I quite enjoyed teaching young kids, they were really creative and it was awesome to watch them bring their ideas to life and show their parents what they made. You would probably be surprised by the kinds of things a curious 5th grader can cook up in Scratch!

I taught adults at Ada Developers Academy for about 4 years. We covered a wide variety of things and my role was very tutoring intensive (hence looking to tutor online). When I started we taught Ruby and JavaScript but eventually we replaced Ruby with Python.

For capstones students got to spend 2 to 3 months on a project that utilized a new technology.

I mentored students that decided to use all sorts of technologies that weren't in the curriculum. From doing mobile development to doing some hardware work (mostly with Arduino) and some games development. I was the first to volunteer to help students with new technologies.

While I was tutoring at Ada I covered a variety of topics. I helped students to understand the curriculum more generally and also to help them with identifying issues with their projects. So often just printing out some messages can make a problem apparent! I also helped students understand the more theoretical side of CS for interview prep.

Unfortunately I was caught up in the industry-wide layoffs, we had to downsize and all part time instructors were let go.

Approved Subjects

ADHD

ADHD

I have experience teaching both adults and children (programming, mostly) and have many friends and a brother with ADHD. I also personally have a sub-clinical level of ADHD traits so I understand well how an ADHD brain works (even if mine is a little easier to control). When I was working at Ada I had a coworker with ADHD and was able to very successfully work with her and pick up the slack from management to help her with accommodations.
CSS

CSS

I've been doing web programming for over twenty years and have seen many frameworks come and go. I'm proficient in browser compatibility and also in things like selectors and CSS 3. I taught web development (including CSS) at Ada Developers Academy for four years and was the person that other instructors pointed students toward to debug CSS issues.
Python

Python

I taught Python at Ada Developers Academy for about two years, we covered both command line usage as well as building APIs in Flask.
Ruby

Ruby

Professionally I've used Ruby in the context of Chef, Rails and doing some Selenium testing for integration tests. I've got a strong background in programming language theory and lots of hands-on experience debugging Ruby. As far as teaching I was a TA for a class in college where we taught Ruby (among other languages) and was responsible for both office hours and grading of assignments. I also taught the Ruby curriculum at Ada Developers Academy (prior to our switch to Python) which had a focus on Object Oriented programming and Rails front and backend development.

She’s so helpful and patient and smart!

I chose to work w Kaida because she has a background in teaching. She proved to be an excellent teacher. I didn’t just need an answer or a quick fix. I needed instruction and guidance. She was the exact right person to help me!

Great experience for my son - was able to guide him well

Teaching my son how to fish and think through the problem, versus just the answer. Definitely will use Kaida to support my son and daughter, grateful for her support and glad we found her!
