Bio

As an engineering program manager for 15 years, and with an MIT degree to boot, I know my fair share of math and science, having taken Calculus, Physics, Chemistry, and Biology AP II. It all started when my algebra teacher sent me to math camp and entered me into a geometry contest the next year, which I got a perfect score on all rounds. Proofs are my specialty. As an engineering program manager for 15 years, and with an MIT degree to boot, I know my fair share of math and science, having taken Calculus, Physics, Chemistry, and Biology AP II. It all started when my algebra teacher sent me to math camp and entered me into a geometry contest the next year, which I got a perfect score on all rounds. Proofs are my specialty. Recently I've also tutored GMAT, ACT, SAT, Statistics, electrical engineering, and edited college essays.

My tutoring experience comes from running a girl scout troop and tutoring kids of all ages through a library sponsored drop-in free tutoring. Each kid comes with his/her own learning style. I like to be patient but firm with my students so they learn the process, no matter how tedious or complex. I am a big fan of learning by doing, and I encourage my students to do the same.

If I didn't graduate in engineering, I would have gladly done it in music! I have played three instruments since age four, and I love piano the best.

After eighteen years, I discovered that playing four instruments wasn’t enough so I started taking music composition classes for fun in college and found out I loved doing it. With the encouragement of my professors and classmates, I kept writing music for multiple instruments for academic credit, and applied my talents to musical groups for years after. Now I collaborate with my fellow musicians, mostly on classical music and Gilbert and Sullivan repertoire. I love to encourage budding musicians to try their hand at writing their own music just like my professors did when I started out and love having jam sessions. Statistics is incredibly helpful in my work so I want to prepare high school kids for what is to come. My biggest mantra is not just to guess but to write everything down! My most novel approach was to make a cube out of paper to help a student imagine how to approach numbers.

My love for geometry came about when my math teacher put me in a geometry competition and I found myself standing on a podium a year later with a blue ribbon for having gotten every question right all year. I loved drawing the world as shapes, angles and lines and went on to apply it to study molecules in chemistry and buildings in architecture. My math teacher inspired me to see geometry as more than just some questions on the SAT, but a pictorial view of the world around us.

Having played since age four, I've used my love for piano to play concerts, compete on the state level, learn music theory, violin, cello and even taken music composition classes up to the advanced level in college. Being able to sight read and play by ear makes teaching students easier to adapt my lessons to the student.

My precalculus teacher did such a good job teaching me my junior year that I went into calculus, wanting to learn more. Thanks to her, I still have a full understanding of how to use my calculator to graph anything and find its roots, asymptotes, and max/minima on paper at the same time. Looking back, it was due to a series of teachers giving me a strong foundation in algebra, geometry, statistics and trigonometry that got me there. Since then, the SAT Math has not gotten any harder but the emphasis on math required for SAT has changed. I believe that teaching the basic foundations beforehand will help students master the SAT Math as those before them have.

My earliest memories in childhood was getting new books from the school and local library and reading them anywhere I could. If you start early, you develop the patience to read the longer books assigned by teachers and the critical reading passages in the SAT/ACT Verbal sections. Since then I've been playing in local Gilbert and Sullivan groups wherever I got, and still run the local group in NC where I lived in 2006.
