James I.

I graduated from UNC Chapel Hill with a B.S. degree in chemistry, with a specialization in biochemistry. I completed two years of undergraduate research in a biochemistry research lab working on enzyme kinetics and bacterial antibiotic resistance. I did complete graduate level biochemistry courses as an undergraduate and was on the Dean's List for a few semesters. I have been published on two separate papers as a fourth author and second author in Cell Chemical Biology and J. Bacteriology respectively.

I am familiar with different biochemical lab techniques and have a general knowledge of all areas of biochemistry. In my lab I worked heavily with PCR, protein purification and expression, spectrophotometric assays, and x-ray crystallography. My lab training helps me to teach students who have trouble grasping the experimental side of biochemistry. I find that once a core experiment is understood, generally the theory behind it becomes easier to understand and remember. I took very good notes in college and helped many friends study for our exams. I am used to drawing out concepts on the board and explaining them in different ways to help different people understand the concept or problem. I did not tutor for payment in college as I didn't have the time and I was busy tutoring my friends for free.

I have also worked for a year on the industry side of chemistry in a small biotech company. Between my time in lab and at a biotech company I have had to create many presentations. These experiences have fostered my ability to teach or present concepts to a larger group of people. I have been to larger conferences with my company to help provide explanation to those that inquire about the research the company is involved in. Currently, I am in medical school learning Acupuncture and Chinese medicine, which means I'll soon offer additional courses such anatomy and physiology to the subjects I can tutor.
