For learners of all ages, success is dependent upon motivation and also the ability to stay organized and on task. My history at establishing a strong working connection with students has enabled me to help them achieve both. My teaching experience includes several years in a gifted education program for second through eighth graders, including curriculum design as well as planning and teaching visual art, creative writing and drama in grades six through eight. After doing my practicum teaching in an alternative public middle school program, I served as a substitute teacher in grades 4-12.

In addition to my classroom teaching tenure, I spent additional time working with individual students and small teams, who entered and won awards in academic competitions. I welcome the opportunity to tutor your child in areas that are challenging and also help your student develop effective study skills that will foster confidence and success in School!

I believe in a holistic approach when working with students. I strive to help them develop their skills, study habits, knowledge and a love for learning. I encourage critical thinking and I feel strongly that reading and writing are essential for most learning. My experience has shown me that integrating the personal interests of my students into their studies elicits engagement and enthusiasm, which then leads to success in their academic efforts.

Thank you for considering me in your search for a tutor.

I hold a permanent, valid K-8 teaching certificate from the State of Ohio. I always received excellent annual reviews/evaluations of my teaching competence and classroom skills. For several years, I was responsible for the design and implementation of the gifted curriculum for grades 2-8. My students were always enthusiastic and engaged during their class time with me. They clambered to sign up for the enrichment classes and clubs I facilitated, such as creative writing, debate, drama and Odyssy of the Mind.

I am a certified teacher in K-8 and have taught elementary students for 3+ years. I am experienced in teaching language arts, including handwriting/penmanship. After assessing a student's competence with letter recognition and also their level of fine motor skills, as appropriate, students are encouraged to practice letter formation and legibility. I look for consistent improvement.
Study Skills,

Study Skills

The consistent use of effective study skills is essential to learning. Good study habits support the ability to produce quality work, earn excellent grades, higher test scores and incorporate new information and skills into further education and everyday life. Some of the study skills I have found to be helpful and that i suggest to my students are things like: taking notes while reading textbooks, creating question and answer cards for review, having a light snack before a homework or study session, planning and beginning work well before deadlines in order to produce the highest quality possible, take 5 minute breaks every 20 minutes to stretch muscles and keep blood circulating, sometimes work in pairs, read material out loud or paraphrase what has just been read. The list is long and I believe that, because each learner is an individual, different study practices and combinations of exercises will be better for some students than others. In order to help my students find the best study skill practices for them, I model and incorporate them into lessons so a student can try out different methods to discover for themselves which ones are the best fit. I have had significant experience helping students in this area as a classroom teacher and also on an individual basis working with students who were preparing for academic competitions and also in private tutoring sessions with students in afterschool homework sessions.

Great Tutor!

Heather came to my home and tutor my 6.5 years old daughter for reading. My daughter just loved it! She knows the right way to guide young kids to love reading and read book in a right way. She is also very patient to explain what my daughter doesn't know. I see my daughter having a good time with her. Because she lived very far away from our home, the commute is a problem. She only had one lesson to my daughter but that is a good one. She also left several books to my daughter as gift. Thanks for that!

Knowledgeable and patient tutor.

I'm really excited to tell you how great Heather is as my daughter's English tutor. Heather is fantastic at helping with writing—she's patient, knowledgeable, and flexible, making her stand out. What's special about Heather is that she doesn't just teach; she works with parents to set goals for the child's learning, making it a unique experience. This has made my daughter super excited about learning. I want to share a nice thing Heather did. When I was worried about my daughter's reading choices, Heather recommended and even borrowed some good books from the local library for her. It's these nice things that make Heather stand out. I totally recommend Heather to anyone looking for an English tutor. Her knowledge and personal touch have made a really positive impact on my daughter's learning journey.

Great tutor and very patient

Heather did a great job working with my son to help him revise, correct and successfully complete one of his more challenging Sophomore English papers. The subject matter was difficult but Heather was very persistent, diligent and patient with Nathan as she collected all of the necessary background information, asked effective questions and helped him write a much improved final draft. The teacher was very pleased and rewarded Nate with an "A" for the finished re-write. Nate is somewhat resistant to use any "extra" help with school work but he felt at ease with Heather and seemed to appreciate her knowledge and insight. I think he felt much less stress and pressure as he had some much needed guidance with understanding the assignment.

Wonderful tutor!

Heather is very experienced and encouraging. My son is in Grade 3 and English is not his first language. Heather prepares each lesson very well to fit my son's level and make it full of fun. My son loves the lessons so much and gets very interested in writing stories and playing scrabble. I would like to recommend Heather strongly.
