Bio

I've been a tutor since 1996 when I was one of the few undergraduate Teacher Assistants at Penn State and worked in their tutoring center helping with math and 100-level business courses. Since graduating in 2000, I've tutored in Philadelphia and Chicago, helping kids from 4th grade all the way up to HS seniors. I've worked with various tutoring companies and as a freelance so I have a wealth of experience and knowledge.

I've been a tutor since 1996 when I was one of the few undergraduate Teacher Assistants at Penn State and worked in their tutoring center helping with math and 100-level business courses. Since graduating in 2000, I've tutored in Philadelphia and Chicago, helping kids from 4th grade all the way up to HS seniors. I've worked with various tutoring companies and as a freelance so I have a wealth of experience and knowledge.

I have the most experience with math tutoring and ACT prep. In math, I've helped a high percentage of students from 4th grade level arithmetic through geometry/algebra 2 improve their grades by at least 1-2 letter grades within an 8-10 week period. For the ACT, I have detailed strategies and lessons for all sections of the test including the writing section helping students reach their ACT goals with many increasing their test scores by as much as 6 composite points. I have also helped students with their paper writing & comprehension skills, SAT, and have been an all-around mentor to many of my past students. I've had some of my best students get accepted to some of the top universities in the country and still keep in touch with some of them to this day.

I am a passionate tutor who brings 4 E's: energy, encouragement, empowerment, and E.J. (myself) to the student, while trying to reduce the student's anxiety and finding the path to their "a-ha!" moment. I find that this positive approach allows the student the opportunity to truly learn and feel good about themselves throughout the learning process while challenging them to be an active student rather than a passive one. I've worked with a variety of students - from those looking for that edge as well as students who have challenges learning and using multiple methods to help them get around those challenges (I know, I was one of them).

I have worked with children as young as the 4th grade in math. I take a patient approach as many students can get frustrated easily with math. My methodology includes real life simple scenarios to help children see the relationship between math and what they might see with their friends or in school - I find this technique gets kids to find some fun in math. Also, with permission from the parents, I reward children when they improve as to give them an incentive to keep up their efforts.

I've tutored geometry for many years and have multiple approaches to various topics to help students keep straight the concepts in class. Geometry can sometimes be a daunting subject for some students, especially when it comes to writing proofs or trying to understand a figure conceptually. My methodology includes real life simple scenarios to help students see the logic and the design to succeed in class.

I have utilized MS Excel since the mid-90's from when I was a TA at Penn State for a intro business class through my entire "day" career as a sourcing analyst and manager. My real-world experiences with Excel have included using it for building dashboards, analysis models, savings trackers, and even use it for various templates. I would classify myself as an intermediate-to-advanced power user.

Writing

For the last several years I have helped students with their writing skills in classes such as English and History as well as on the ACT writing section and essays for college applications. I bring a holistic approach from organizing thoughts on paper, execution, to proofing. I also help students strengthen their vocabulary and mature their word selection to help them convey the strongest, clearest, and most eloquent message possible.
