I have met all the classroom requirements to be a special education teacher but during my senior teaching apprenticeship realized my strength was tutoring one on one with students. I received my best professor reviews when teaching reading but also can help with math and writing. I love seeing students overcome challenges and realize that they are smart and capable. I am great at breaking instructions down to small incremental steps so that they are less intimidating for students and to encourage understanding.

At an early age I found out I have the patience needed to work with students with special needs when working as an assistant instructor in my martial arts classes. In college I tutored students who were having to take basic math to improve their skills to take college level math classes. My friends would often come to me for help with editing papers and for help brainstorming ideas to help expand on their subjects or how to narrow them down as needed. Since graduating from college, I have been homeschooling my daughter, who has ADD, and have learned from experience methods that work and don't work for students with attention difficulties. I am also flexible enough to adjust as needed because not all students who have similar challenges will respond the same way to the same methods.
