Qualifications for “chemistry”

I have a BS in Chemistry from University of Madras, Chennai, India and an MS in Chemistry from the Indian Institute of Technology, Bombay (Mumbai), India. My Bachelor's degree study covered physical, inorganic and organic chemistry with public exams at the end of each of three years. I also has extensive laboratory training in organic synthesis, inorganic salt analysis extensive volumetric analysis and physical chemistry concepts. This intensive laboratory training combined with the classroom study and clearing the public exams resulted in my earning the Bachelor's degree that established my foundation in physical, inorganic and organic chemistry.

My Master’s degree program was a rigorous exercise with focused attention to Organic, Analytical and Environmental chemistry. The total course and laboratory work completed in this 2-year degree program, combined with the BS degree program focused in Chemistry establishes my subject knowledge and competency to teach this subject.

Besides academic training, I also did a summer internship with Coromandel Fertilizers in Vizag, Andhra Pradesh, India, in summer of 1976. The best proving grounds in unit processes and unit operations for any chemical engineer are either fertilizer plant or a refinery. Each of these manufacturing environments essentially includes most of the unit operations studied bya student in college. The hands-on feel for reality supported by the academic training provides wholesome training towards becoming a chemical engineer.

I have a deep appreciation for this subject that I am very passionate about and enjoy teaching this. AN outline of the course pathway I would follow teaching in a school is given below. Based on the student background in the subject, I can help a student with any of these topics specifically or work with the student through their high school or college years in chemistry. A general scope of non-specific chemistry course is given below. This is generally indicative of middle to high school level chemistry and I will work with the student to customize this to his/her requirement based on where they are at with the subject and the syllabus covered at their grade level.

I graduated in 1975 from University of Madras, Chennai, India with a BS with concentration in Chemistry. Math and Physics were at minor level. I got my MS degree, also in Chemistry, in 1977, from Indian Institute of Technology, Mumbai, India.

I then changed lines to study engineering and completed MS (Chemical Engineering) at the Indian Institute of Technology, Chennai, India in 1980. Subsequently I worked for about one year as a Chemist at the "Centre for Rural Development" - a novel rural adoption programme started by the Indian Institute of Technology, Chennai. In this role, I designed and constructed solar stills for brackish water reclamation, designed and oversaw construction of a 70 cubic meter bio-gas digester to convert cattle waste from a diary farm.

In 1981 I joined the Chemical Engineering department of the Indian Institute of Technology, Chennai, India as a research scholar to pursue a PhD degree with focus in Environmental Engineering - a division of Chemical Engineering at the Indian Institute of Technology, Chennai, India - and was awarded PhD in July 1987 for my work and thesis tilted "Mass Transfer and Kinetics of Dyestuff adsorption on different adsorbents". During this time, I also designed and took responsibility for contruction and operation of water recycling programs for two student dormitories, each housing 130 students.

I covered Chemistry and Math courses in depth during my Engineering and Chemistry studies. I have also taught one semester Math for University of Phoenix online. No matter what the discipline, I firmly believe that student success requires individualized tutoring plan so that it aligns with student’s learning pace and timelines.

I am a good listener and do not mind interruptions. I will work with the student to plan the tutoring lessons schedule based on what works for the student, while remaining flexible on tutoring session duration. Normally, I like to always a complete a lesson begun unless the student has a reason for a hard stop at a given time. In any case, I always prorate charges based on actual duration of tutoring sessions.

I currently have 30+ years’ industry/consulting experience combining Business and Technology management and have learnt that flexibility and adaptability are key stepping stones in moving towards success. I have broad based knowledge of Math and specialized education in Chemistry and Chemical Engineering. I enjoy teaching and helping students hone their skills in these areas.

Besides this, I have been a category judge for the Chemistry division projects in several school and regional science fairs in Prince William & Fairfax counties in Northern Virginia. I have also judged at the Thomas Jefferson High school for Science & Technology in Fairfax, VA. My other hobbies are hydroponics and good vegan/vegetarian cooking and I have made significant inroads into the latter by developing the concept of "theme based" cooking. Some of my dishes are "flower in the pond", "Banana Boat" in sweet and savory versions and "Chargetti" that is a unique style of cooking spaghetti by infusion with several spices.

Elementary Math,

Elementary Math

Elementary math consists of topics taught at primary or secondary school levels. Elementary math introduces math to students and helps them become mathematically literate. I remain committed to helping students recognize math as a language of reasoning, communicating and problem resolution at the elementary and secondary school grade levels. I have taken significant load of math courses during my BS, MS and PhD course work requirements. I have also completed the University of Phoenix online teaching program training and completed teaching one semester of Math. Besides pre-algebra and algebra I, I look forward to teaching math at elementary and secondary school levels. At elementary school level, I will devote time to instilling an appreciation of basic math concepts like quantity (counting of objects), number recognition (knowing numbers by name, numeral, pictorial representation, or a quantity of the item), number meaning (quantity or position based; cardinal and ordinary numbers) and basic number operations (Understanding number manipulation and depicting the same using numerals, words or pictures). My strategy for student success is to understand the areas where help is needed, particularly from classroom and homework perspectives. I will work with the students to be current with classroom math taught and also work with them to understand the reasoning and resolution required to do their algebra homework. Improving subject comprehension will be the key to students developing friendship with math.

I have a BS in Chemistry from University of Madras, Chennai, India and an MS in Chemistry from the Indian Institute of Technology, Bombay (Mumbai), India. My Bachelor’s degree study covered physical, inorganic and organic chemistry with public exams at the end of each of three years. My study of Chemistry (with minor in physics and math) has given be a "ringside" look at the interaction between nature and life, interpreting these in quantifiable terms, understanding what it means and enhancing knowledge. Teaching elementary science is basically bringing awareness of nature, its manifestations and varied interactions to the students. The objective is for them to mature in this understanding and demonstrate the same by success in classwork and homework. Elementary science concepts can be broadly classified into an understanding of the elements of nature like air, Water, Land, Matter, Energy, Living organisms and interaction between life and the environment. Concepts presented are simple and focused on building the foundation for the beginner and enhancing the curiosity of the prolific for better grasp and moving ahead in this discipline that combines physical science (physics & chemistry) and life sciences (biology, botany etc.) into one single topic that emphasizes interaction between life and environment through observation, measurement and inference. My approach to teaching this topic will be based on study of: Matter Energy Air Water Living and non-living things Environment Observing interactions between all the above. My strategy for student success is to understand the areas where help is needed, particularly from classroom and homework perspectives. I will work with the students to be current with classroom science taught and also work with them to understand the reasoning and resolution required to do their homework.

Cooking

Cooking

I always cherished a desire to sneak into the kitchen and “make something” whenever I could. Over a period of time I figured that cooking is the art of combining the basic four elements of taste, viz, sweet, sour, hot and bitter tastes in harmonious fashion resulting in food that pleases the tongue taste buds besides providing presentation appeal that actually is a visual appetizer. This formed the bedrock of all my culinary skill development that is completely self-taught. I did not attend a culinary school or was taught by anyone. The experience also solidified my belief that you can learn a lot by observation, repetition and enhancement. I have made numerous dishes in the vegetarian domain and relish creation of new recipes that combine presentation, taste and health factors. Many of my recipes are self-developed by imagining the multitude combinatorial possibilities of the basis four tastes mentioned above. My work includes savory dishes and desserts. Over many years, I have learnt to combine these into a full meal that includes an appetizer, main course and dessert. I am interested in teaching the art of vegetarian cooking to folks wishing to go in this direction for a meal. I can provide recipe directions, or cook at client locations.

Patient and knowledgeable tutor; tailors style to suit individual student

We have been extremely satisfied with our experience with Venkata. Not only is he very knowledgeable, he has a genuine passion for teaching and it comes across in the care and patience he demonstrates when working with kids. As a parent, he encouraged me to take a step back and focus on the "bigger picture" in terms of my child's learning style. He spends extra time and effort to search the internet for additional resources that he emails us to enhance what he covers in the tutoring sessions. This has been the most personalized tutoring experience and we are very happy to be working with Venkata.
