I have a Master's in Computer Science from Stanford, and enjoy helping people learn about math and computer science, as well as related subjects like physics, discrete math and SAT prep.

My specialties include college / AP classes like calculus and physics, as well as college classes for discrete math, computer architecture, and algorithm analysis. If you are dealing with a challenging class, a tough teacher, or just need a refresher in trigonometry, probability and statistics, or precalc, I would love to help you. My students appreciate my approach with lots of patience and positive reinforcement.

I have a flexible schedule, and can meet you or your student online or in person after school or during the day. Most of my in-person students meet at the library or in their home. During the school year, I have a number of regular weekly clients who get priority for future appointments, so not all times shown in the availability list below are available for new clients, but I would be happy to work with you to find a time that would work for you.

My preference is to work with students who want to improve performance over a series of regular sessions, as opposed to one-time help for a class assignment or test. You might reasonably expect a one-letter grade improvement from weekly meetings over an eight week period; of course, that varies with the student, subject, and situation, so is a goal rather than a guarantee.

I am among the top in-person calculus tutors in the state of Virginia, while also doing extensive online tutoring for several years on Wyzant and other platforms. (Not to mention that I am a Jeopardy winner, too!) I have helped dozens of students in person and many more online with calculus problems, including differential and integral calculus of a single variable (i.e. College Calc I/II, as well as high school AP AB/BC), including limits, differentiation and integration techniques, word problems, and series. I am competent to consult on architecture and engineering topic including security and performance engineering. I have thirty year's work experience as a professional software engineer, developing and manage software engineering efforts using a variety of languages and operating systems. My specialty is systems software, especially operating systems, networks and databases. I have an MSCS from Stanford in Computer Science, as well as a BS is Computer Engineering from the University of Michigan.

I have a Master's degree in computer science from Stanford, and thirty years professional experience in computer engineering. I work as a systems architect and help mentor junior developers. I was a teaching assistant at the University of Michigan as an undergraduate.

Discrete math is one of my favorite topics to teach, and I have many satisfied students in person and online to show for it! Set theory, combinatorics, graph theory, propositional logic, mathematical induction, boolean algebra. Fun stuff! I work with a lot of students here at Wyzant and on other platforms, including discrete math and discrete structures for computer science. I have taken (and received an A) in college level discrete math (i.e. math for computer scientists vs. calculus), and regularly teach the subject on Wyzant and other services, including college courses using textbooks by Epp and by Rosen.

Precalculus is the foundation for these subjects, covering functions, polynomial roots, and especially trigonometry: sin / cosine / tangent, complementary functions, unit circle, identities, equations, formulas and so forth. SAT Math

SAT Math

As a recipient of a perfect 800 score on the math SAT back in the day, I know what it takes to get through this type of high-stress test. I can help you review the key concepts including ratios, probability, geometry and graphs, as well as help with test-taking strategy, such how to make best use of your time and how to make better guesses when that's necessary. I have worked with many students, and typically focus on helping students achieve about 100 point improvements in their math score, from about 600, to 700 or better. You may see other tutors promise more, but they are not the ones taking the test! I know what it takes to help students master the material so that they can be successful on the test.

Excellent Tutor!

Doug is the perfect tutor. Period. He has been tutoring our son for the past two years in high-school advanced Math and Physics and the difference we have seen is amazing. Our son is now consistently getting A’s and it has increased his confidence in these subjects dramatically. Doug is super clear in his explanations and will find alternative ways to explain difficult topics. He is patient and thorough. He also gives plenty of practice problems to reinforce the learning. If a topic requires additional research, he is great about following up to ensure that he has provided the correct and complete explanation. Doug is also a true professional - punctual and responsive in all communications. It makes it easy for our son and for us to work with him. We can’t thank Doug enough for the impact he has had in helping our son stay at the top of his class in two very tough subjects. Doug is very good at explaining Analysis of Algorithms concepts such as inductive proofs and the runtimes of sorting algorithms.
