Qualifications for “proofreading”

Proofreading is essential. I can show you quick and easy steps to help proofread your own work. For example, do not limit proofreading to the computer screen; print out your work, and I guarantee you will catch a mistake that you might not have caught simply by reading it on the computer screen. When I first started writing, I did not believe this technique would work, but it did, and since then, it has saved me a lot of time (and embarrassment) during the proofreading process.

Hello! I’m an English major at American Public University. Whether you are a native speaker or one who desires to learn English as a second language, I can help. As a former ESOL tutor volunteer for the Literacy Council of Northern Virginia, I have experience in tutoring non-English speakers; however, as an English major and co-organizer of the Springfield Writer’s Group, I’m also experienced in critiquing and copy editing fiction and non-fiction, which includes essays. I take online classes, so my schedule is quite flexible. In fact, I am available seven days a week. I live in the Springfield, Virginia area, but I’m willing to travel to D.C. and Maryland. Please note, that any travel that exceeds 20 miles, rates will go up accordingly, but they will still be affordable, as I believe that money should never deter one’s learning, especially when it comes to a language that is spoken globally.

Nevertheless, words are meaningless without proper context, which is why my tutoring methods are visual and interactive. The student will never be lost and left to try to figure out something on his or her own. I understand that not everyone learns in the same manner, which is why I allow the student to dictate what learning technique works best for him or her. If you prefer in-person or Skype tutoring, I am more than happy to accommodate you. Please be aware that I am here to help, not to do the work for the student. Remember, in order to learn a new skill, it takes practice. Therefore, I am patient and I ask the same of the student. English, as with any language, is difficult to master, which is a feat I have yet to achieve, and I’ve been writing for over a decade! However, this is normal. Any writer will tell you that language is virtually impossible to conquer, as it tends to morph with time, leaving the writer to strive to keep up with its transcendence. Still, this does not mean one cannot achieve a solid foundation in speaking, reading, and writing English. If you want to improve any or all of the aforementioned skil

This sort of tutoring is still relatively new to me. I just started at the beginning of 2013. Though challenging, it is also rewarding when my student finally gets “it.” I volunteer at the Literacy Council of Northern Virginia. Currently, I am helping a Vietnamese man learn English.
Grammar,

Grammar

Grammar is fun, but it can be tricky for writers and non-writers alike. I find that by constructing simple stories, the student learns the art of crafting sentences and choosing his words carefully. Combining the rote method with the aforementioned technique works best.

Reading

There are two types of readers: passive and critical. Passive readers read for enjoyment, but critical readers read to genuinely understand the text by consistently asking why something—a word, a sentence, a paragraph—is written in a particular context. Critical reading is not easy to master, but it is easy to learn the basics.

Vocabulary is not tricky, but it does require one to be astute. When reading, if you come across an unknown word, do not simply glaze over it; highlight it and be sure to return to it, so you can learn it. The rote method is one of the best ways to master vocabulary.

English

English,

English

In a way, English is difficult to master because many rules are subjective. For example, it is acceptable to start a sentence with “because” in informal writing, but one should not do it when writing an academic paper. I can help distinguish what is acceptable and not acceptable in academic writing.

Literature,

Literature

I have taken classes in a variety of literature, including Women’s and World. Reading is an integral part of writing, and helps the student gain insight into past and current authors, and how said authors contributed to society. Understandably, an author who lived during a different time period might be hard to comprehend, but with a little research into the writer’s background, his or her work slowly becomes readable, interesting, and fun. I can help facilitate this process.

Writing

As a self-published author, fiction is my niche, but I am certainly competent in writing non-fiction. In fact, the two complement each other. For example, one can use story-telling techniques to make non-fiction more lively. Likewise, one can apply factual evidence to make fiction more realistic, but still entertaining.
