Hello! And Hola, Bonjour, and Bom dia! I am an experienced educator with university, K-12, and adult literacy experience. As a student in a college prep high school in Baltimore, Maryland, I started serving as a writing tutor for my peers, and I have been tutoring , advising, mentoring, or teaching ever since. I love to help students discover their strengths; break big tasks into small, achievable pieces; and find creative approaches to complex topics.

As a professor at Virginia Commonwealth University, I helped students write essays, compose oral presentations, train as peer mentors, and build confidence in themselves as learners. As a college and career advisor, I helped students prepare submissions for scholarships and colleges, identify their interests, write resumes, and make summer plans that would position them well for future opportunities.

As the director of a high school pilot program called Credits, College, and Careers, I helped students develop skills for the future, including work-life balance, time management, and choosing a college major. I also helped them through the dreaded Senior Slump, where that last stretch before graduation seems to last forever. Because of this experience, I have the ability to stay honest and positive with students, even when they're feeling unmotivated, and to bring a sense of humor and a collaborative spirit to our time together.

Exquisite Instruction and Remarkable Background

This particular tutor does an impeccable job explaining intricate concepts in a brief amount of time. I was quite impressed with both the presentation style and command of the material.

very nice tutor

I’m very glad to meet teacher Lara, I feel happiness and joy during the 2-hours class, we talked about history of Ancient China and Ancient India, I studied not only what I’ve learned in my school but also some other knowledges, I really enjoy studying history and I’m really satisfied with teacher Lara’s class, I think her way of teaching me is very novel, for example she likes to write things on small cards and link two or more cards together so that I will know they are related, I have never seen this way of studying before! And I think this way of studying really helps me! This is one of the reasons that I think teacher Lara’s class was very nice. The other reason is that she let me read the passage on the screen which will help me understand what it is talking about, sometimes reading the passage aloud is better than reading it with no sound. But we were not just reading the passage, teacher Lara also wrote something on a white board so I can learn it intuitively. I am really sure that my global history grade will be advanced if I keep taking teacher Lara’s class! Although my grade for global history is not high now, but I have confidence to upgrade them in the future
