About Coty

Hello future students,

My name is Coty. I a currently a Senior at Virginia Commonwealth University. I have always loved English. I enjoy watching students grow and learn to love learning. I enjoy watching students discover new talents and realize that they can achieve anything they put their mind to. My greatest joy comes, when I see the light bulb "turn on" and they finally understand a concept that they were previously struggled with.

I have worked with both exceptional and general education students; in the practicum setting. My first practicum was when I was a senior in high school, for a class called "Teachers' for Tomorrow" in 2012. I taught English in the Exceptional Ed/ Self-Contained setting. I served as the co-teacher to four students. I taught the students parts of speech, grammar, mechanics, and syntax. We also covered the literature that is required for English 9. Some of the books we covered were "To Kill a Mockingbird," "Homer's the Odyssey", and "Divergent."

My second practicum was in 2014 at Manchester Middle. I working with 8th graders to prepare them for the state Reading and Writing SOL's. We covered grammar, writing, and literature devices. We covered the novel, "Divergent." we also incorporated Cooperative Learning (Group work) and Project-Based Learning. All of the students passed the Writing SOL.

I helped prepare students for the state-mandated reading and writing test, Standards of Learning (SOL).

I have worked with students that have learning disabilities, ADHD, and Autism I have attended several Individualized Education Plan meetings to determine what the Least Restrictive Environment would be appropriate for each student. I have modified curricula for students with disabilities to help them meet academic requirements in order to graduate and be successful in their classes. I have also differentiated instruction to help meet the needs of each student.

Come and learn to love reading and writing. When you open a book and read you can make your dreams come true. I hear to help succeed in your academic endeavors whether it be to become a better writer or to pass an SOL test. I will make sure you get the most out of every lesson. I look forward to working with you.

Approved subjects are in bold.

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

ADD/ADHD

In 2012, I taught a self-contained English 9 class, where all of my students had ADD/ADHD. The students struggled to focus on the tasks at hand. In order for them to succeed I used strategies of differentiated instruction. I would get the students to run an errand for me anytime they were fidgeting in their seat. I also provided a stress ball for those that needed to release some energy discretely Implementing these strategies helped my students pass my class and become better students and readers.

English

I have taught both high school and middle school English. ALL of my students passed the writing and reading SOL.

SOL

When I worked at a Middle school, I prepared 8th graders for the writing a reading SOL's. In preparation for the SOL's, my co-teacher and I met with students to do SOL remediation twice a week. All of our students passed the SOL's with advanced scores. In the process, each student became a better writer and reader.
