Bio

Hello! Back in high school, I was that math nerd that people asked for help when they were having trouble in class. I graduated with an ACT 35 and superscored SAT 1560, and I passed the Precal CLEP test with a 76. Additionally, I finished my undergrad degree with the equivalent of a math/science minor. I worked with a nationally recognized math tutoring business for two and a half years, and I have been tutoring math independently for more than five years now. I typically do one-on-one...

I typically do one-on-one tutoring, but I have taught up to four students at a time. I teach both online and in person and am happy to help with homework.

I work with all grade levels but specialize in elementary math and the transition between arithmetic and algebra. I have seen so many students struggle to make it in algebra - it's so new and different, and at first it can seem really confusing. My goal with struggling algebra students (and all math students) is to find the weak points and spend concentrated time there until the weak points have become the strong points! I have worked with student after student who is not "bad at math," just overwhelmed and unsure about foundational concepts. Clear up how algebra language works (or what fractions really represent, etc.) and suddenly what the teacher says makes sense again.

I hear the same comment from students, parents, and my boss at the tutoring center: what's unique about me is my ability to recognize a trouble spot, slow down, and make it super clear - clear enough to make students say, "I wish my teacher had just said it like that!" Parents and students see progress that surprises them because of my commitment to go back to the root of the problem.
My method is simple: assess current abilities and teach from where the student stopped understanding. I teach each new concept, then coach the student until he can complete even difficult problems independently. I typically cover 3 to 5 new concepts in a lesson. Try it out - now is the time to conquer trouble spots, impress teachers, and get ahead.

ACT English

ACT English

Getting ready for the ACT? I got a 36 on the English section, and I want to let you in on how I did it. I've been tutoring for years now, and I am thorough, clear, and patient. I am about to graduate with a literature degree from Patrick Henry College and would love to talk about how you can understand the English language better, especially as it applies to the ACT.
ACT Math

ACT Math

There are two components to scoring well on the ACT math section. You have to know the high school math topics they cover (there are specific topics you need to be sure you understand), and you need to understand the particular approach they want from you. They ACT is looking for a particular type of problem solving tactic. I would be happy to explain tactics, timing, and topics to you and help you practice them so you can get closer to achieving your goals.
ACT Reading

ACT Reading

I'm a Literature major and perfect scorer on ACT Reading and English. I'd be happy to sit down with you and find out where you are and how to get where you want to be with ACT scores. My approach to scoring well on the ACT Reading section is to focus on strengthening section time management, question comprehension, evidence location skills, and passage comprehension. You'd be surprised how much more you understand when you read with the right technique! Send me a message to learn more.
ACT Science

ACT Science

Why, you may ask, is a Literature major teaching science? The answer is that (although I do happen to like science) I was able to score high on ACT science mostly because of my reading comprehension, graph reading, and logic/problem solving skills, not because I knew tons of scientific facts. Don't be fooled - doing well on ACT science isn't really about having the whole periodic table memorized or knowing the speed of light in meters per second off the top of your head. It's about how well you can answer the specific types of questions the ACT will throw at you. I'm happy to help you figure out what you'll need to do to score high!
Algebra 1

Algebra 1

Are you transitioning to algebra and wondering when math got so hard? The gap between arithmetic and algebra is a huge one, and I have extensive experience with common trouble spots, in-depth review and practice, and helping students get ahead of the algebra curve. So many students wait till Algebra 2 to finally ask for help – instead, why not go ahead and make sure the foundation is solid now!
Algebra 2

Algebra 2

Are you transitioning into higher math and wondering when it got so hard? Algebra 2 really dives into the tricky stuff, and I have extensive experience with common trouble spots, in-depth review and practice, and helping students get ahead of the higher math curve. Algebra students tell me they wish the teacher explained things like I do, and I've helped many of them go on to master what they thought was impossibly tricky. Even algebra 2 makes sense - if you take the time to understand it!
ASVAB

ASVAB

Were you a little surprised when you learned you have to remember algebra and geometry to get into the United States military? Especially if you’ve been out of school for a while, the ASVAB can pose a major challenge, but I have the experience, the knowledge, and the teaching skills to move you closer to your ASVAB and career goals. I’m familiar with the test, I’ve been tutoring for years, and I’ve helped multiple ASVAB students prepare for the test. If you need a little help figuring out what you need to study, making a plan, and mastering the material, let me know!
Elementary Math

Elementary Math

Is borrowing really getting your student? Are word problems your worst nightmare? Are you struggling with higher math because mistakes keep popping up in your multiplication? I love to teach elementary math concepts, and I've been around the block with the typical trouble spots too. My goal is to explain clearly and patiently enough that there are no cracks in the foundation!
Geometry

Geometry

Struggling with geometry? Wanting to do better in class? Hoping to get ahead? I would love to talk to you! My students (and their parents) say that I make things clear enough that they not just understand, but master tricky math topics. I am dedicated to going back to the root of any problems you are having and building from a strong foundation up to advanced topics.
Greek

Greek

I have completed Greek I-V with high marks at Patrick Henry College, and I can help with classical and Koine Greek - I specialize in taking those confusing concepts (think optative and future more vivid conditional constructions) and explaining them in plain English. I can also help students with no prior Latin experience through Greek textbooks that assume knowledge of Latin (as some Greek textbooks tend to do...)
Homeschool

Homeschool

I've worked in private tutoring and homeschooling for more than five years now, and I love helping kids get on track with school and stay there! I've helped homeschoolers with math, reading/English, art, science, and Spanish, and I had the privilege of homeschooling twins in math from learning to count up through third grade. I am kind, patient, encouraging, and some students think I'm fun! I'm committed to excellence and clear, thorough explanation. I was also homeschooled myself K-12.
Literature

Literature

I'm a Literature major who would love to help you get to know books, writing, and communication better. I can help with the classics, basic and advanced composition, writing both fiction and non-fiction, and literary theory and criticism (all of which I have studied for my degree).

Public Speaking

Public Speaking

As a shy 12-year-old, my teacher told me to "speak up, Natalie." But since then, I've done multiple years of speech and debate training, a speech and debate camp, a college recitation/public speaking class, and, more recently, hundreds of hours of teaching and leading meetings. Over the last couple years, I've spoken in front of crowds of sometimes hundreds of people on the regular. I was shocked the first time someone told me I was a "natural" public speaker - because I sure didn't used to be! All that to say, I'd be happy to lead you through lessons that help you build confidence and communicate effectively and persuasively no matter where you are with public speaking right now. It can be scary at the beginning, but it can also be rewarding.
Reading

Reading

Whether you are looking for help learning to read or help with advanced reading comprehension for standardized testing, I'm a Literature major and bibliophile who can help you get where you want to be. I started tutoring reading by teaching my little siblings to read, and I haven't stopped talking about books since.

Need to improve your SAT reading score? Here's four reasons to choose me: 1) I love literature and can teach you to read with increased comprehension. 2) I can teach you the concepts and vocabulary you need to understand exactly what the questions are asking you. 3) I am a nerd about grammar rules and can show you the important ones (How well do you know the rules about commas? I thought so...) 4) I have the SAT scores to prove I know my stuff.
