I have a B.A. in Dramatic Art and a certificate in American Sign Language.

I have tutored low literacy adults and enjoy the discovery when someone 'gets it'. I also teach English as an Other Language to adults. Studies do not come easy for me, so I understand that sometimes people need extra help or a different viewpoint to understand something new. I find that many times students fall behind because they find the material dull. I believe in breaking complex problems into components to make the subject understandable.

My goal is to present material in a way that the student will understand the basics and be able to move to the next level with confidence.

I teach ESOL by total immersion. I tailor each session to the needs and vocabulary of the student. I don't spend a lot of time explaining grammar, but use grammar and vocabulary to help students reach their goal. My training in theater arts has given me the tools to teach students American pronunciation as part of their vocabulary lessons. I have had the privilege to teaching ESOL to financial managers, journalists, pharmacists, accountants and other professionals. I always remember that my students are intelligent adults who have come to learn another skill. Most importantly, I believe that the learning experience for adults should not be a chore but something they look forward to each time that we meet.

Grammar

Grammar

I love English grammar. Although the fashion is to promote fluency without focusing on how or why the language works. I teach students the basic eight parts of speech, then show students how each piece fits together with the others. I teach students how to make sure that subject/verb match and the importance of antecedents when using pronouns. My students learn that grammar is the foundation for their expressions, not simply rules that have no place in their communication. I teach students that grammar is a puzzle and my method is to show a student how to put the puzzle together to make many beautiful pictures.
Public Speaking

Public Speaking

I have a BA in Dramatic Art and studied speaking skills, linguistics and phonetics in pursuit of a career in the theater. I have performed in numerous community theater and small professional theater productions of the years. I know (and can explain) techniques for improving speech quality and calming nerves when having to face a group.
Reading

Reading

I am a former volunteer with the Washington Literacy Council where I tutored low-literacy adults and trained other tutors on using the 'Wilson' method of reading. The Wilson method provides a structured way to using sounds to read and spell and also encourages students to write. The Wilson method is adaptable to all age levels and is great tool for those who wish to begin a life of reading pleasure.

Exceptional tutor with a great sense of humor

Moire is fantastic; she is knowledgeable, competent, and genuine and has a GREAT sense of humor. I feel fortunate to work with such a truly exceptional tutor! I am trying to expand my vocabulary and weed out errors. Since I learn best through communication, we discuss the latest international news and personal topics and read articles. With Moire, I can be sure to get honest feedback and helpful memory hooks through conversation and her explanations. I am looking forward to each one of our lessons!

Very knowledgeable tutor

Moire is an excellent teacher. She is very good at providing the tools to understand how to break down words so you can break down words you don't know. She is also very good at making sure you understand what you're reading and explaining it when you don't. Definitely recommend Moire as a tutor.

Moire gives you exactly what you hired her for!

My mom had her first English session with Moire. She was very happy! Unlike many other instructors who wants to teach what they think the student needs, Moire took into consideration precisely what my mom needed in her English sessions which was how to speak everyday English with native speakers and she practiced exactly that with my mom. Very happy with this instructor. We highly recommend her.

Patient and encouraging tutor

I worked with her to prep for an interview, and she was amazing. Since English isn’t my first language, she helped me rephrase my answers to sound clearer and more precise, which made a huge difference. She was super encouraging and really boosted my confidence. You can tell she’s incredibly experienced, and she truly gets the struggles non-native speakers face.

Knowledgeable and Patient Tutor

For several weeks, Ms. Moire patiently instructed my college-aged son in English 101. She helped him find scholarly articles, analyze them, and write on several different topics. She asked him good questions to keep him focused on what needed to be done and helped him to understand these articles and assignments. She made herself available, even with tight deadlines for the papers that he had. I highly recommend her!

Understanding, patient, knowledgeable tutor

I am an American born native speaker. My issue is my grammar, vocabulary, and spelling are horrendous. I am 39 years old and need help. My goal was to improve my writing and speaking skills. I need to present myself as a professional and my level of English is getting in the way professionally. Moire has helped me build my confidence and has set up a class structure to improve all of my shortcomings. I could have not found a better tutor. She understands me and is able to curate an ideal lesson just for me.

A patient and encouraging tutor!

Moire was amazing in teaching me certain tricks and skills in managing to spell words in IPA. Very helpful, encouraging, made the lesson fun! If I ever need more help especially going forth with accents, which we will learn about soon in the class. Then I know who to go to!
