My teaching strength is to make learning fun and successful. Children need to know that learning is a real "feel good" experience not a drudgery. In some of my past teaching experiences with children that were below level, I used hands on approach to math. They became so excited about math, that they wouldn't be late for class or miss a session. I would teach the "little tricks" to solve a problem, which they loved.

They became so excited about math, that they wouldn't be late for class or miss a session. I would teach the "little tricks" to solve a problem, which they loved.

I have a degree in Elementary Education which required classwork in all subject areas. I also taught grades 2-5 in several different elementary schools.

Building on success is important, working towards a goal gives them reason to want to do better and to not give up. Reading, grammar and writing are subjects that I love and can break these down for the elementary age child to build on. My last 3rd grade class in a charter school rated in the top percentile in the country wide grammar test for that organization.

I think it's important to have good communication between tutor and parent. Once an evaluation of the child's level is made, then a plan of instruction can be planned. Every session will include a short communication about child's attitude and success. This report is as important to the student as it is to the parent. Depending on the age of the student this report can be in the form of a progress chart with stickers and or comments. Activity or practice recommendations for the child and parent will be included. I encourage comments from the parents as well.

Elementary Math,

Elementary Math

I have taught math in grades 2-4 and also did several years as a tutor in middle school level. These children were weak on some basic elementary math skills and I was very successful in helping them catch up, raise their math grade and rejoin their class.

Handwriting

I taught third grade for many years. Put of that curriculum was the mastery of cursive handwriting. To this day, I am teased about my "teacher perfect" handwriting.
Phonics,

Phonics

Besides my degree in Elementary education, I took additional courses in reading and phonics work. I have taught classes of below grade level students with a reading program that was completely centered on phonics. I also taught my own daughters to read using phonics, building vocabulary and then sentences.

Study Skills

For four years, I taught a math tutoring class in a middle school. I found that a problem with most of my students had was poor study and organizational skills. This became a big part of my curriculum for them. My students all raised their grades and I was complemented by their Math teachers because of their improved study and homework skills.

Experienced Educator

Carol's experience with her subject matter and dealing with my children was very apparent the first few minutes of our session. Looking forward to our next session.

Ian, 4 lessons with Carol

Knowledgeable and patient tutor

Carol came to the first tutoring session prepared and ready to meet my daughter's need. She did an assessment to see what areas Christina needed help in. She's going to continue to work with Christina to help improve her weaknesses. She brought in prompts and did some hands on projects. I was very pleased with the first session. They worked on letters, numbers, and count to 10. Carol's title "knowledgeable and patient tutor" fits her well.

Excellent tutor - brings out the best in her students

Carol has been great for my daughter to work with. She's patient, knowledgeable, and has a calm demeanor that helped put my daughter at ease as she was nervous about meeting with a tutor. They've met a handful of times now and Carol always comes prepared with materials that supplement what my daughter is working on at school. Carol provides me with great feedback, and makes it very easy to communicate with her (text, email, or phone). Highly recommend.
