I received my Bachelor's of Science in Mathematics and Statistics while completing graduate course work in biometry. I went on to work as a research associate for a longitudinal study looking at risk factors of cardiovascular disease in African Americans. After working with the study for 9 moths I began graduate studies towards my Master's in Public Health with a concentration in biostatistics. I remained in the arena of public health as I continued my studies in Epidemiology, working towards my doctorate degree with a minor in biostatistics. Along the way I took advantage of many opportunities to further my working knowledge in research, teaching, and mentoring within the (STEM) fields. I taught calculus at our local community college and worked as a teaching assistant and department tutor for the graduate college's biostatistics course and epidemiology course. I also taught college algebra and introductory statistics for ITT Technical Institute.

My tutoring experience began in 1999 as a math tutor for my college math lab. Students could come into the math lab and seek help for any level of math. I also worked with high school students in after school programs and Saturday math prep programs for SAT/ACT prep. I went on to serve as a biostatistics tutor in grad school for the Epidemiology department. Once I entered the research phase of my program I decided to go back to tutoring math as well as statistics. I've worked as tutor full-time for the last 5 years.

In all, I've worked as a tutor for over 16 years. Additional experiences that have helped me improve my tutoring methods include my teaching experience (Pima Community College- Math Faculty Certified) and my experience as a National Science Foundation Graduate K-12 Teaching Fellow. I have a B.S. in Math and Statistics (2001). While the statistics degree required joint courses to be completed at LSU-Health Science Center in Biometry. I completed the coursework in Biometry (theoretical biostatistics) at LSU-HSC (2001). I received my MPH with a minor in biostatistics from the University of Arizona (2004). My research is heavily based in analytical Epidemiology. Aside from my quantitative background, my research work in the sciences combined with my skills in biostatistics have enabled me to engage students in interesting conceptual questions that relate current events to mathematics! To tutor biostatistics well you have to understand not only the application side (using the software and calculating the numbers) but as well, the theory side to help students truly comprehend their objective in the process of analysis.
Elementary (K-6th)

Elementary (K-6th)

I have tutoring experience in math, reading, science, writing, and social studies for K-6th grade students. Over the last 2 years I have worked with 5 students in the K-6 grades. Beyond math we worked on multi-subject tutoring that required additional assistance in science, language arts, reading and writing. My emphasis for the upper grades is study skills and attention to specific areas where the students may have weaknesses which include concentration, attention to detail, comprehension, and pace of work. For the lower grades I emphasize comprehension and detail. Comprehension and pace is important at these grade levels to ensure students are not engaging in poor habits such as rushing through work or lack of attention.

Personally I was homeschooled for grades 1-3 and was a member of a homeschool group within the city of New Orleans. More recently I have tutored from the homeschoolers math textbooks "Saxon Math" for grades 5 through grades 11 ( "Saxon Math Algebra 2" ). I have also tutored homeschool students in algebra using Saxon Math.
STATA

I have graduate level course work in STATA and I am a self-taught programmer in STATA. I make the distinction because most programmers that use SAS and STATA often use the Windows based version for introductory level statistics courses. However, at the University of Arizona, STATA is a preferred statistical software package and I have learned to program in STATA to gain more access to the powerful tools that STATA has to offer a programmer. My experience with STATA extends to the following courses: Intro Statistics, Test of Means, ANOVA, ANCOVA, Test of Proportions, Regression Analysis (linear, multi-linear, logistic). I've been working with introductory statistics for 10 years. I received my BS in Statistics in 2001 and an MPH with a biostatistics concentration in 2004.

I've worked as a tutor and mentor to students of all ages (HS--College) for 12+ years. Good study skills are a necessary part of setting a goal, working through the steps towards reaching a goal, and ultimately accomplishing a goal. As a mentor it was extremely important for me to work closely with students within a finite amount of time to ensure their assigned projects were worked on daily (setting manageable daily tasks). In my working experience with students it was important for the student to meet a standard of comprehension that ensured their learning goals were being met, and they were capable of passing internal examinations (short term goals) which showed their progress and gains in accomplishing their long term goals. Studying effectively is a technique that is unique to each student. There are some generalized methods that all students should adhere to such as: - Good note taking skills This includes good headers Creating sections for each topic Good penmanship is a must Reviewing notes - Good Posture when studying Proper seating does wonders for blood flow Have a good work area for study materials - Good organization Highlighters, post-it flags Taking pride in your work is a must! Ultimately all of these items can be modified by the student. What's important is that the person working with your child takes the time to learn your child’s individual learning style and works with them to build good, strong, positive, study skills.

A Cut Above the Rest

Rachel guided me through one of the toughest courses I've taken while obtaining my MBA.... Statistics. Rachel is extremely knowledgeable in Statistics - there wasn't an area she couldn't tackle. She helped me through calculations regarding the Central Limit Theorem, confidence intervals, correlation coefficients, standard deviations, P-values, hypothesis testing, determining the critical values, determining the test statistic, populating the ANOVA table, Tukey's HSD approach, regression equations, and she is extremely knowledgeable with using advanced statistics software that we were required to use. I can not say enough good things about Rachel's teaching/tutoring abilities. I couldn't have done it without her. Wyzant is fortunate to have her on their team. She's sharp!
