I am a recently retired ESL/ESOL/ELL Teacher. I've taught Beginning through Advanced ESL Adult Classes for 18 years in Fairfax County and in the Spotsylvania County Adult Regional Education Programs. I am a recently retired ESL/ESOL/ELL Teacher. I've taught Beginning through Advanced ESL Adult Classes for 18 years in Fairfax County and in the Spotsylvania County Adult Regional Education Programs. I have experience in teaching large classes (25 students) and small classes (10 students), and am currently teaching a smaller class (5 students) for the Loudoun County Literacy Council. The adult students in this current class present a particular challenge in that they are illiterate in their native languages, but I'm seeing progress and loving it!

In the ELL (formerly ESOL) world, we teach four skills, usually referred to as "LORW" (Listening, Oral(Speaking), Reading, and Writing). I tailor each of these to the specific needs of my students.

I've been a guest speaker and presenter at five consecutive VAILL Conferences hosted by Marymount University (2000-2005), and a guest speaker at the 2005 Virginia State ESOL Convention in Roanoke, VA. I've actively participated in approximately 20 ESOL Certification Workshops and am certified in the Parents Educational Partners (PEP) Program, Best Plus, and TABE Testing. I've also been published and I've been interviewed by the local Fredericksburg newspaper on my successful teaching strategies that kept students coming to class! I constantly incorporate items of interest, as well as humor, since it's a well known fact that Adult ESOL Learners "vote with their feet" if their classes are not of value!

One of my most rewarding experiences in teaching ESOL has been teaching an illiterate student for four years and watching her pass her U.S. Citizenship Exam. I burst with pride every time I think of her achievement!

In our country we are an "acronym" society. I teach LROW (Listening, Reading, Oral and Writing). As a seasoned ESOL teacher, I incorporate all four areas according to the needs of my students. Of course I deviate as necessary. For example, if I realize that most of the students' needs are writing, I adjust accordingly. If I teach children, I'm more than capable of teaching to their particular needs. I use ESOL texts, realia, conversation issues, math manipulatives (for younger children). You name it, I do it! TU!

I use ESOL texts, realia, conversation issues, math manipulatives (for younger children), etc. I consider grammar to be one of the most important components of the English language!

While I'm a recently retired adult ESOL teacher, I have tutored many young students in the past with great success. One of my fondest memories was tutoring twin girls who needed extra help throughout the school year in 3rd Grade reading. Their teacher's weekly reports reflected great progress as a result. I've taught many young (k-6) students successfully. I consider reading to be essential to all other subject areas throughout their lifetime, starting early on & continuing in k-6 studies. Excellent Tutor; one of the best I've had

Mrs. Mary contacted me by email for a request for Grammar tutoring for the TEAS Nursing pre-admission exam, which I ended up passing with a 90%. I think I wouldn't have been able to get such a high score wasn't it for her and her excellent teaching skills and vast knowledge of the English grammar. And, you must know, that thanks to her and her faith on me, I'm more close than ever to becoming a nurse. Mrs. Mary always kept me in focus, she never made learning monotonous, and most importantly, she always had high hopes in me passing this test. She's really like and angel and I really don't know what I would have done without all the many types of help she provided me. We always met at least twice a week, and she was always on time. We never had any trouble understanding each other, and I bet she can help anyone struggling with English or English Grammar because she really knows this topic well. Thank you Mrs. Mary for believing on me and for everything!

Very patient, encouraging, accommodating, and creative tutor!!!

Mary helped my son for about 4 months. We felt that he was behind with his reading and writing at the beginning of 1st grade. She helped him not only with these skills, but also with his self-confidence. She always had a bag full of activities to work on and was very open to my input when I had recommendations of what I wanted them to focus on. She was also very accommodating with our busy schedule and even brought snacks for him (when we forgot to pack one). Mary is extremely patient with young kids and I would definitely recommend her! Thanks!!!

Great tutor

Ms. Mary is very patient with my three children and handles their different needs with care. She is honest and will not hesitate to let my children know when they are not pushing themselves to their level or higher.

Great Tutor!!

Even though her schedule was very tight and well planned, on second request she accepted my kid. She explained some tricks and logic regarding the solving the analogies. She is very cooperative and helpful. I would recommend Mary C. Thanks.

Excellent style especially for reluctant

Every once in a while my daughter says school is not her thing. I know staying on task and accepting feedback also are not necessarily her thing. But Ms. Mary is her thing. We had several lessons in August (and I wish we had begun earlier in the summer) and not once did my daughter complain or resist going to tutoring. Ms Mary was able to keep her engaged and learning. She has a nice positive style that draws my daughter in rather than being resistant. ms Mary selects materials individual to her interests. She adds in new concepts outside of her written material as they arise. For example my daughter referred to something incorrectly -off the top of her head ms Mary explained the proper usage and gave her a concrete tool to use. Even if my daughter does not remember each and every rule taught I know if she hears these concepts in school next year she will feel prepared.
