Hi, I'm Heather! My experience & expertise includes various math topics within PreAlgebra thru PreCalculus, as well as Trigonometry and Geometry.

I began tutoring math at Yavapai College in Arizona in 2001, at which time I received Tutor Certification through the College Reading and Learning Association and earned the Outstanding Tutor Award while working in the Learning Center. One student in particular stands out to me from this experience. Historically a C student, through tutoring she earned her first-ever A in math. As a result, she gained confidence in her ability to do well and needed very little help from that point forward. I believe that my job as a tutor is to "work my way out of a job" - i.e., to help students build the confidence and skills needed to succeed on their own to the extent that is possible.

In August 2006, I moved to Utah and began working as a substitute teacher in Alpine School District. Almost immediately, I was asked to substitute long term, teaching Algebra 1 & Geometry in a high school. From that time through December 2019, I worked as a math teacher, a sub and a math aide in grades 7-12. As a private tutor during this same time period, I helped several students complete College Algebra through UVU and BYU. And another was able to pass the math portion of the GRE (graduate student "basic" skills exam). Through these experiences, I became familiar with what students need to know, as well as what skills they must have in order to progress through each level of math. I've also learned what skills students tend to struggle with most and how to overcome those challenges. Then in December 2019 I left the classroom to focus more on helping individual students, and I continue to learn ways to better help math students.

In a nutshell, I’ve been able to help many students make sense of math. Feel free to contact me with any questions. I look forward to helping you/your student!

Algebra 1

Algebra 1

While working towards my degree in Mathematics Education, I took several upper level math courses, which in turn helped me understand lower level concepts. Since 2001, I've successfully tutored College students in Beginning Algebra thru College Algebra/PreCalculus. And since 2006, I've taught and tutored math students in Middle & High School (7th thru 12th grades, with topics ranging from PreAlgebra thru Algebra 2, Geometry, and Trigonometry). Students I've worked with have all been more successful in their math courses.
Algebra 2

Algebra 2

While working towards my degree in Mathematics Education, I took several upper level math courses, which in turn helped me understand lower level concepts. Since 2001, I've successfully tutored College students in Beginning Algebra thru College Algebra/PreCalculus. And since 2006, I've taught and tutored math students in Middle & High School (7th thru 12th grades, with topics ranging from PreAlgebra thru Algebra 2, Geometry, and Trigonometry). Students I've worked with have all been more successful in their math courses.
Geometry

Geometry

While working towards my degree in Mathematics Education, I was required to take a Geometry course which covered Euclidean (plane) & non-Euclidean Geometries - primarily through proofs. Since 2006, I have also taught high school Geometry (before the switch to the spiraled core) and have taught & tutored 7th thru 11th grade spiraled core mathematics (which all include geometry topics).

Trigonometry

Trigonometry

Trig is so awesome! It allows us to use what we know about various types of triangles to find unknown values! What's more, it simply builds on what we already know about basic math and algebra. My college degree program was in Mathematics Education, where I studied many mathematics topics in more depth. Since 2001, I've successfully tutored College students in PreCalculus (including Trig). And since 2006, I've taught and tutored High School math students (9th thru 12th grades, which includes topics in Trigonometry). Students I've worked with have all been more successful in their math courses. Let me help you understand Trigonometry better!
