Hi! My name is Joel. My undergrad is in film, and my M.F.A. (Master's of Fine Arts) in writing. I specialize in creative writing, essay writing, literature, film production, film and art history, film and art criticism, and classics.

In college, I was a teaching assistant for a college film and storytelling course, assisting in the in-class lecturing, as well as helping the students workshop their writing. I'm a very hands-on teacher, and very interactive. I like to work with students that are creative and cooperative, and I let them do a lot of the thinking. For me, teaching is less about beating information into a student, and more about creating an environment where learning is easy and rewarding.

I will help students set their own learning goals, and give them the resources and instruction to meet them. If the student is a poet or a writer, I will review their work and help them refine their creative skills through constructive critique. If writing essays, I will help them with their logic, arguments, and structure. I have tons of writing workshop experience from my undergraduate and graduate degrees, and currently read and review screenplays as part of an internship.

If you would like to tutor with me, I am available at most times--even odd ones--for online tutoring, and am able to easily travel to most areas in Fort Worth and Arlington for in-person tutoring.

Bible Studies

Though my degree is in film, I graduated from the Honors College at my alma mater, Houston Christian University. This replaced my core coursework with a rigorous classical education. Notably, we were educated in the reading of the Bible, Church Fathers, Medieval Divines, Protestant Reformers, and modern theology like Leibniz and Barthes. I do not read Biblical languages. I am also trained in Christian Apologetics and was a student leader at the Ratio Christi chapter at Houston Christian University. I can teach both a Christian approach to modern challenges and defenses of God's existence and Scriptural accuracy. I love the Scriptures, and I understand and teach them by emphasizing the story of God's covenants with man and eventual fulfillment of those promises in Christ. I am a traditional protestant Christian.
Classics

Classics

Though my degree is in film, I graduated from the Honors College at my alma mater, Houston Christian University. This replaced my core coursework with a rigorous classical education that covered the literature and thought of Ancient Greece, Rome, Classical Antiquity, the Middle Ages, the Renaissance, the Protestant Reformation, the Early Modern Period, early America, and Late Modernity, as well as a deep study of the Bible.

Film

I also possess a Bachelor of Fine Arts in Cinema Arts. I have been studying film for 10 years, have seen over 900 films, and have connections to respected film academics.
