My name is Mike. I'm currently a visiting assistant professor at UNT, where my position focuses on research in number theory and also has a teaching component. I obtained my PhD in math from the University of Tennessee, where I have gained a wealth of teaching knowledge and experience.

I've tutored in various parts of DFW during my undergrad and masters programs, and I used to work at Mathnasium of Coppell before starting my masters program. I've taught math throughout both of my graduate programs, which total to 7 years of official teaching experience.

My tutoring experience ranges from high school and middle school math to advanced college mathematics. I have taught the calculus sequence many times in my career as well as college algebra in various forms. I also taught a summer course in advanced linear algebra to graduate students at the University of Tennessee during my final year.

My teaching style is best described as a mix of Socratic/conversational dialogue and classical methods of presenting information (on a piece of paper, a chalk/white board, etc. Nothing fancy is needed). It is pointless to purely demonstrate information to the student without having the student's input and participation. Thus, I believe that healthy learning comes from healthy two-way dialogue. The student and I "figure it out together".

I generally have very positive reviews on ratemyprofessor (from both UNT and UTK) and have inadvertently converted many students to become math majors. I hope that I can help you learn to love math as much as I do!

Approved Subjects

ACT Math

ACT Math

Aside from obtaining my PhD, my qualifications are my past tutoring experience.
Algebra 2

Algebra 2

I have taught algebra in many forms over the last 7 years.
Calculus

Calculus

I have taught the college calculus sequence too many times to count over the last 7 years as a college instructor. One could say that it is my main strength as a teacher.
Drawing

Drawing

Drawing is something that I have done since I was probably 2 years old. I was always a good artist, especially in sketching. It takes a good eye and a creative mind to draw sophisticated pieces. I was first moved into advanced art in the 6th grade, and through 8th was always in AP art. In high school, I was also put into senior art classes as a freshman and have a large portfolio of pieces I have done in the past. I have won the mall of America State Fish contest as well as some others.
Elementary Math

Elementary Math

Elementary math is essential to everyday life. Arithmetic, multiplication, and even some probability is learned. It is a must that students learn the basics of arithmetic in order to be successful in not only school, but in life. I try to make learning these things fun (and I do believe they can be fun!). Believe it or not, there are very deep properties of arithmetic that are never explored by kids, let alone by professional mathematicians!
Finite Math

Finite Math

I have taught various forms of "finite math" while completing my PhD program. The subjects usually cover basic propositional logic, elementary number theory, and elementary combinatorics.
Geometry

Geometry

Aside from going through my PhD program in math, I've tutored a handful of high school geometry students. The how's and why's of Euclidean geometry are easy and fun to express to students, and I find that the subject isn't as difficult as it's made out to be.
Guitar

Guitar

I have been playing guitar (acoustic and electric) and singing for many years. My grandfather taught me when I was 16, and a few years later I played small shows around DFW. I've taught both my sister and my wife how to play, and now she plays regularly and sings. I specialize in scales (solo guitar) and rhythm in modern music.
Linear Algebra

Linear Algebra

Aside from my PhD, I've taught a summer version of an advanced graduate linear algebra class at UTK.
Prealgebra

Prealgebra

Prealgebra can be quite a hurdle for some as new topics are introduced that are slightly more complex than simple multiplication, division, addition, and subtraction. This is mostly the manipulation of fractions. Prealgebra opens up a door for a bit of creativity in math, so there are a couple of ways that students can think about the problems. I go with the approach that allows the person learning to figure out the best way to learn this subject personally, and then I build off of that. This is one of the most important mathematical subjects because it is needed for the rest of a school career.
Precalculus

Precalculus

Aside from going through my PhD program, I have taught and tutored this subject many times. I am in fact currently teaching a TAMS version of pre-calculus at UNT.
SAT Math

SAT Math

As a student, I have taken the SAT exam before. Though it can be a little scary for students, it's nothing more than algebra I, II, and some basic graphing. The way to tutor this kind of subject is to use the essential tools, which are the basics of algebra and linear equations. Applying and building on these topics make the SAT math section a breeze.
Trigonometry

Trigonometry

Aside from my degree, I've taught this subject many times and have even tutored some students in trigonometry in the past.

Michael is a tutor who takes ownership.

We went through several tutors for our grade 11 daughter. In Mike, we've found a very committed and diligent teacher. Michael has helped my daughter believe that she is good at math and has improved her SAT math score tremendously. He is very punctual and sincere. Thanks Michael.

Thorough and dedicated

Michael has done an excellent job with my son. Since he began tutoring my son, grades have improved significantly, from the mid 70s-80s to 90 on a test and 91 on a quiz!! Michael is conscientious and ensures that the student understands the basics, before he begins with more complicated concepts. He ensures that the student understands that each concept builds on each other and how they interrelate. Michael has the ability to immediately establish rapport that allows for a productive learning experience. We will definitely continue to use his services.
