Hi, I'm Renee! I’m a freshman majoring in Public Health as part of the Health Science Scholars Honors Program at the University of Texas at Austin. I graduated as valedictorian of my high school class, balancing academics with leadership and clubs like NHS, HOSA, Orchestra (President), Theatre (Manager), and Varsity Tennis (Captain). Outside of school, I coached tennis, taught violin, babysat, tutored, worked at a shaved ice stand, and volunteered in community programs.
Throughout high school, I tutored students in a variety of subjects and age groups. One of my commitments was volunteering at a local underserved elementary school, helping small groups with math, reading, and writing. Many of the students spoke primarily Spanish or Chinese, so I also helped them improve their English skills. We would review homework, and I’d explain the reasoning behind each answer. It was rewarding to see them return each week with more confidence!
This past summer, I traveled to Taiwan to teach English at Minsheng Junior High School for five weeks. Alongside other volunteers, I helped design creative and engaging lessons. Working with international middle school students challenged me to become a more patient and adaptable teacher.
Additionally, I have experience tutoring high schoolers in more advanced subjects. After earning a 5 on the AP Chemistry exam, I began helping friends with their chemistry coursework by meeting in cafes and working through notes and homework one-on-one. I’ve also tutored classmates over FaceTime in many AP subjects. These one-on-one sessions created a comfortable space for open communication, and it was especially gratifying when my friends shared their improved exam scores!
I genuinely enjoy tutoring because it allows me to positively impact others’ learning journeys. Seeing students progress from confusion to understanding is incredibly rewarding. I’ve learned to be flexible and attentive to different learning styles, and I’m committed to helping others grow academically and personally!
