Hello! My name is Abby, and I have a strong passion for language and communication. I am equipped to help students improve their academic writing and to help English learners improve their communication abilities.
I graduated summa cum laude with my B.A. in History and Spanish, and I am currently pursuing a master’s degree in Speech Language Pathology. I have completed TEFL certification to teach English as a second language, I worked at a university writing center, and I am pursuing my C1 certification in Spanish.
I spent a year working at my university’s writing center where I helped students improve their writing at every stage of the process. Clients at the writing center were mainly undergraduate students, though I also helped high school students, graduate students, and non-native English speakers. My goal, and my favorite part of tutoring writing, is helping you find your own voice to best communicate your ideas.
My approach to tutoring begins with the big picture, then narrows down to the details. The first key to writing is building a clear outline and focus for your writing. Next comes drafting your ideas. This stage involves multiple steps of brainstorming, organizing, and editing. Finally, once you are satisfied with the overall product, you can work on polishing up your grammar and word choice. As a tutor, it is my job to equip you with the tools to complete these processes on your own. I want you to understand the mechanics and processes of writing and help you be able to express your ideas fully and clearly.
I have two years of ESL teaching experience, both in classrooms and individual lessons. I can help you improve your pronunciation and grammar in ways that are useful to your daily life. My approach in teaching English centers on conversation and functionality. Whether you want to practice conversations, learn specific vocabulary, or work on difficult pronunciations, my goal is to help you communicate clearly. I want others to understand you, and I want you to understand them.
