Why I tutor
As long as I can remember, I've been helping students in school. I've spent much of my life as an academic coach -- from correcting my younger brother's algebra homework to editing college essays for high school students -- and I'm currently working for a tutoring company in Knoxville while I complete a graduate degree in applied mathematics.
I've been a coach for so long because I enjoy it, but students ask me back because I bring enthusiasm, hard work, and personalized attention to each lesson.
What I teach
I specialize in coaching subjects at the high school and college levels, specifically Math (from Algebra I to Differential Equations) and English (from the basics all the way to AP English coaching/college essay coaching). I personalize each lesson, assign reasonable homework between sessions, and track progress every month.
My strongest attribute as a math tutor is that I wasn't always particularly interested or good at math. In fact, what pushed me to pursue math in college and graduate school was having a high school teacher who took time out of her day to discover what I needed to succeed.
Similarly, I find for many of my students their struggle with mathematics isn't their discipline, ability, or desire to learn -- it's how they're being taught. I recognize that every student will have specific needs, that each lesson needs to be slightly altered, and that the approach to mathematical understanding will depend heavily on the student.
I appreciate the potentially huge impact that an academic coach can have on a student. As such, I value honest feedback and earnest input from my students and their parents. Never hesitate to communicate dissatisfaction or ask for specialized help.
Schedule & Availability
As a graduate student, I am fairly flexible with my schedule but because I do my best to tailor lessons to each student, I prefer at least 12 hours of notice before a cancelled appointment.
In addition, I live fairly close to UT campus and am capable of traveling about 20 miles to accommodate student needs.
I look forward to hearing from you! Why I tutor

Jonathan helped me tremendously in my understanding of statistics. He explained things very thoroughly and in easy to grasp explanations. He is courteous, punctual, professional and very knowledgeable. I have recommended him to my friends and will continue to do so. Money well spent!!!
Jonathan is a wonderful teacher. He is extremely patient and knows to teach math in a way that others can understand. My daughter had struggled with pre-cal most of the semester due to a teacher who is no longer vested in her students. Thanks to Jonathan my daughter's confidence with math has improved! We highly recommend Jonathan and will not hesitate to use him again in the future!
My first lesson with Jonathan was excellent. He knew exactly how to help me. This was the first week of my statistics class and Jonathan has a laid a great foundation of understanding statistics through our first meeting!
So happy I hired him! He is so good with my daughter! She says he is so helpful and wishes we had found him sooner. He is so flexible to meet her in a convenient place!
Jonathan was very easy to understand when breaking down material as well as being patient when I didn't understand something. Very easy to ask questions to. Does not nickle and dime you on time and is willing to stay longer if desired.
Jonathan helped me tremendously in understanding my statistics. He thoroughly explained things and in a way that was easy to understand. He is courteous, professional and very knowledgeable ! I would recommend Johnathan to anyone needing help in statistics. I will definitely contact him again if I need help in the future!
He is teaching me math problems that are new to me that I have not learned in school and needed for ACT. He also gives me tips for work on my own between tutoring sessions.
Jonathan is helping my children with their middle school math. He is very helpful and really makes the math understandable for them.
Jonathan helped me in statistics with probability. We talked about how it works and differences between each case.
He was helpful!!!
I met with Johnathon and in the hour he spent helping me with calculus I managed to learn and feeling 100x more comfortable with material that my teacher was not the best at explaining. Overall very happy with the hour spent.
Jonathan was able to explain complex topics in simple terms I could grasp. Very patient and knowledgeable. Highly recommended.
In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.
I've taken 5 courses in at the University of Tennessee in C++: the introduction in COSC 102, Data Structures/Algorithms 1 in COSC 140, Computer Organization in COSC 160, Data Structures/Algorithms 2 in COSC 302, and a class in numerical algorithms in MATH 371. Additionally, my research is in implementing trading algorithms which I do mainly in C++. I am also a tutor at the Min Kao tutoring center for certain computer science classes.
I'm a mathematics graduate student at UTK, have taken a handful of classes in Ordinary and Partial Differential Equations, and am writing my thesis on Stochastic Differential Equations.
More about my PreAlgebra and Algebra 1 qualifications:
I passed the WyzAnt test for both PreAlgebra and Algebra 1, and have taught both subjects with a local Knoxville tutoring service for 40+ hours.
I minored in statistics in college; I've taught probability, stats, and econometrics to more students than I can count; but I'm a heck of a lot more fun than most statisticians!
