Bio

I am a full-time public school math teacher, but tutoring has always been one of my favorite forms of teaching. One-on-one instruction gives me the chance to find exactly where a student is struggling, fill in the gaps, and build real understanding instead of simply pushing through procedures.

I specialize primarily in upper-level high school math, College Algebra, Precalculus, Calculus, Statistics, and actuarial exam preparation for Exams P and FM. I enjoy taking complicated ideas and breaking them into clear, manageable steps. Whether a student needs help catching up, preparing for a test, strengthening fundamentals, or pushing into more advanced material, my goal is to make the math feel understandable and less intimidating.

A major part of my work is helping students build confidence. Many students understand more than they realize, but they have lost confidence because of past frustration, rushed instruction, or gaps that were never fully addressed. In tutoring, we can slow down, identify the real issue, and rebuild from there. I try to be both rigorous and encouraging, with plenty of dry wit and good humor offered at no extra charge.

Wherever I teach, I tend to develop a reputation for being extremely knowledgeable in my subject, and other teachers often come to me when they have math questions. I recently retook the Praxis Math Content exam and scored 197 out of 200. I have also passed actuarial Exams P, covering probability, and FM, covering financial mathematics.

I have been tutoring through Wyzant since 2019 and am currently listed by Wyzant among its 25 Highest Rated Actuarial Science Tutors. In 2020, I was rated a top 10% Wyzant tutor, with 75 different students and Actuarial Science as my top subject. ACT Math

ACT Math

I have taken a mock GRE, which is harder than the ACT within the last 3 years and scored in the 93rd percentile in Math. I have also made a near-perfect score (197 out of 200) on the Math Content Knowledge Praxis (5161), which is considerably more difficult than the ACT. I have also taught ACT Prep for the last 3 years.
Actuarial Science

Actuarial Science

I passed Exam P in July 2018 with a score of 8 and Exam FM in April 2019 with a score of 7. I did this without the benefit of in-person course work while working full time and being a father of two school-aged children. The difficulty of this subject raises the rate to $50 per hour.
Algebra 1

I have taught Algebra I in summer classes and have taught Algebra II or higher for all of my 13 years as a certified math teacher. My experience teaching the classes beyond Algebra I is invaluable for helping students to develop deeper understanding of the concepts and procedures, and for preparing them for their next steps as math students.

I have taught Algebra II or higher for 10 full school years and 6 summer sessions. I can answer any question at an Algebra II level from multiple approaches, depending on the needs of the student.

My current Job is at Rhea County High School, from August 2016-present, where I have taught Algebra II, Geometry, Applied Math and Bridge Math. Previously I worked at Murrah High School and Jim Hill High School in Jackson, MS, from August 2006-May 2016 as a Teacher of Geometry, Algebra II, Trigonometry, Precalculus, and Calculus. I have also tutored multiple students all the way through Calculus through Wyzant. My knowledge of Calculus is extensive, and I understand the difficulty in grasping the new concepts that you are now seeing.

I took a mock GRE about 2 years ago and got a 167 on Quantitative and 163 on Verbal. These are both above the 90th percentile.
Praxis

I retook the Praxis Math Content Knowledge (5161) on August 29 and scored 197 out of 200. I have also taught general test prep skills and had the opportunity to put them to good use within the last year and a half, not only with the Praxis, but also with actuarial exams P and FM.
Precalculus

Precalculus

I have 7 years experience teaching precalculus and 3 years experience teaching calculus. This enables me to focus on the rationale for the precalculus topics and how they prepare students for the next steps in calculus.

In July 2018, I passed actuarial exam P (probability) with a score of 8 out of 10. The lowest passing score is 6.
Statistics

Statistics

I have tutored students in statistics at the college level and helped students understand the very counterintuitive concepts that are difficult to grasp just from a textbook. I have had great success in helping students who were very shaky on the concepts to deepen their understanding and get excellent grades in the class. I have also passed actuarial exam P (probability), the which covers many of the same topics in depth without the benefit of graphing calculators or software. In order to pass it, I had to teach myself, to do the hard work of pulling these concepts from a textbook with very little guidance.
Trigonometry

I taught trigonometry for 8 years, 3 of which I accomplished without a textbook. It was entirely driven by notes and a worksheet-generating software. My approach involved many examples, as well as deriving nearly all of the formulas and procedures (sometimes several ways). In addition, if I had to choose one favorite to teach, trigonometry would probably be it.
