I am in graduate school for a Philosophy Ph.D. at the University of Utah, where I specialize in Applied Ethics. I graduated with honors from Clemson University with a B.A. in Philosophy and Biology and a minor in Psychology. My experience as a teacher is substantial, as I have worked as the Writing Tutor for the Department of Philosophy and Religion at Clemson for almost two years, wherein I helped students improve the clarity and rigor of their argumentative essays. I also amassed significant experience as a leader of the university's philosophy club, in which I would offer brief lectures introducing topics as well as ask probing questions to provoke deep discussions. I also participated in Clemson's Ethics Bowl team every semester of my undergraduate career, wherein I helped lead my team members to competitive success through helping them improve the strength and clarity of their arguments. As a tutor, my focus is two-fold. First, I help students better understand anything and everything related to ethics and apply that understanding to real-world issues that matter. Second, I help students improve the quality of their writing, with a focus on honing clarity, concision, and substance as well as developing a competent philosophical style. My tutoring style is characterized by an emphasis on clear, logical thinking, and my ability to distill difficult concepts into basic, comprehensible pieces.

Philosophy

Philosophy

My coursework in philosophy includes the following: Biomedical Ethics, Foucault, Modern Philosophy, Animal Rights, Ancient Philosophy, Animal Minds and Ethics, Limits of Morality, Anarchism, Philosophy of Art, and Parfit and the Environment. I have participated in Clemson's Ethics Bowl, and have applied ethical principles to real-world issues, and have participated in regional and national competitions debating these issues. I have participated in CU Boulder's summer seminar in philosophy, in which I discussed various topics in epistemology and ethics with leading philosophers. I received Clemson's philosophy student award in Spring 2020. I have applied to graduate school for a PhD in philosophy and am currently awaiting admittance decisions.
Vocabulary

Vocabulary

My philosophical education has required me to read widely in philosophy, from classis treatises to contemporary academic articles, and this has made me cultivate a broad vocabulary. I also scored in the 96th percentile on my Verbal GRE, which includes a substantial section on vocabulary.
Writing

Writing

I have extensive experience writing analytical, argumentative essays, especially in philosophy. I have written a mid-term and term paper for most of the philosophy classes I have taken at Clemson, which amounts to somewhere around 15-20 substantial philosophical essays. Outside of class, I have written many short essays on ethical topics for Ethics Bowl, writing samples for applications to various summer programs, and a 23-page writing sample for graduate school applications. I also completed a 50-page Interdisciplinary Honors Thesis (Philosophy and Biology) which received a grade of "A". The skills I have developed in writing about philosophy extend broadly to nearly every other subject, as good philosophical writing favors features foundational to good writing generally: clarity, concision, and rigor of argument.

Insightful and friendly tutor

Caleb helped me refine my philosophy essay by giving me advice on improving the strength and clarity of my arguments as well as the style in which I presented them. He didn't simply tell me what to do, but rather, gave me the tools to allow me to do it myself. His style of instruction is clear, engaging, and enjoyable - he finds a way to make even the driest material interesting.
