If you want superb writing or editing, I am the person to turn to.

I graduated magna cum laude from Davidson College with an honors degree in history and Phi Beta Kappa distinction. I went on to receive an M.A. and a Ph.D. in American Studies from the College of William and Mary. What I gained most from these degrees was an ability to write well and think analytically. I have taught and tutored writers of all ages and in a wide variety of fields for 25 years. I worked with the admissions office at the University of South Carolina for 10 of those years where a big part of my job was to read application essays to determine scholarship eligibility and honors placement for prospective students. My teaching jobs have been at the College of William and Mary (Williamsburg, VA), the University of Richmond (Richmond, VA), Keio University (Tokyo, Japan), Kasaoka High School (Kasaoka, Japan), and the Richland Two School District (Columbia, SC).

I was the editor for The Making of Twenty-First-Century Richmond (2024) and Liberty is Sweet: The Hidden History of the American Revolution (2021). A selected list of universities I have helped clients enter include: Stanford, USC, Boston College, UVA, Florida State, Kent State, Macalester College, Swarthmore, and UCLA.

From 1994--2001, I lived and worked in Japan. Following this, I directed a summer exchange program for Japanese students visiting the American south. Working with Japanese students both in the U.S. and in Japan trained me as an English and ESOL teacher. Currently I work with hispanic elementary school students in a local gardening program.

I can help you with Ph.D.-level humanities, history, or cultural studies or with beginning level English-language writing and reading, and I have particular expertise in college and graduate admissions applications. I am available almost any time to review or edit your writing and research papers. I encourage you to contact me and we will see what we can do to get you on the road to great success!

College Counseling

College Counseling

During and after completing my M.A. and PhD. in American Studies (William & Mary, 2005), I taught undergraduates at The College of William & Mary (Virginia), the University of Richmond (Virginia), and Keio University (Japan) for 12 years. My familiarity with university academics plus my excellent writing and editing skills developed as a doctoral student have enabled me to help many students successfully apply for higher education. I have edited admission essays for undergraduate college entrance, masters and doctoral programs in numerous fields (nursing, nutrition, history, american studies, and social work, among others), and medical school. To my knowledge, all of the students I have helped were admitted to their schools of choice.
ESL/ESOL

ESL/ESOL

Many seem in need of writing expertise -- whether minor proofreading, major editing, or face-to-face (Skype or in-person) feedback. I am highly qualified to help you! I plowed through my own PhD classes and dissertation (2005 degree in American Studies from the College of William & Mary, Williamsburg, VA), wrote articles and many conference papers along the way and after graduating, and worked as an editor and a college professor for a total of ten years. I am now a full-time mom looking to gradually get back in the paid-work game. Wyzant tutoring gives me the flexibility to do that. I'd love to help you!
Proofreading

Proofreading

I have a PhD in American Studies from the College of William and Mary, am a published author, and have written and edited papers, articles and books for others for over 30 years. My writing and editing has been as a professor at three universities (College of William & Mary, University of Richmond, & Keio University in Japan), a teacher in high schools in the U.S. and Japan, a grant writer for Richland School District schools in Columbia, SC, and an independent contractor for the professional editing company, Edit 911. I am very detailed and I have a knack for creating smooth, flowing text. I am a good teacher, helping writers not simply improve one project but also advance in their writing skills overall.
SAT Writing

SAT Writing

In 2000, while completing my PhD in American Studies (College of William & Mary, 2005), I began editing academic papers for college students and tutoring both high school and college students in writing. I have continued this work ever since, editing hundreds of academic articles, essays, and books via Wyzant, Edit911, and as an independent freelance editor and ghostwriter. Most recently I have turned my attention to tutoring both middle and high school students in SAT writing. My thorough and detailed feedback on students' practice essays has helped relax students and increase their confidence going into their first SAT exam. In addition, all of my students taking the test a second time have improved their writing scores significantly.
Writing

Writing

I have a PhD in American Studies, which is writing dependent and heavy. I have taught students of all levels in English or American studies and have coached writers for the past 20 years. I have worked with native and non-native English writers. Most recently, I have served with success as a grant writer for our public school district.
