Richard Lederer once said that "English is a Crazy Language", and I couldn't agree more! I have been helping students figure it out anyway for 25 years. Like my students, I have lived in a foreign country where I couldn't express myself about simple things, even though I am an intelligent person--this incredibly frustrating experience has helped me to understand the many challenges of my students.

Reading, writing, grammar--I have experience with it all. I have worked with students from grades K-12, although most of my experience is in elementary ESL. I love to use music, games, comics, stories--whatever it takes to help a student succeed, I will try it. I really enjoy languages--each one has its own unique expressions and way of looking at the world. Students, too, have their own unique way of "looking" at what is asked of them--and it is my job as a teacher to understand how they learn best and to help them do so. I have lots of experience over many years, so I have been exposed and used many different teaching styles. As a result, I can use whichever one I think will work best for a particular student. Respecting each ESL student as a learner who has intelligence and capability even though s/he may not yet completely understand the language in a particular task is key to helping ELL students make good progress.

ESL/ESOL,

ESL/ESOL

I have a masters degree in ESL from Hunter College. I have been teaching ESL for many years, and I still love it! English is a challenging language to learn, but I have a talent with languages--and I am good at sharing my talent with others. I can help you improve your speaking, listening, reading and writing skills--and we can have fun doing it. Give me a try--let's learn together!
Grammar,

Grammar

As a student, I always loved grammar, but I never really learned it well until I studied French. We don't study a lot of grammar in the US, but it really helps in becoming a better writer. It is kind of like studying the rulebook for a sport, in a way--winning depends on playing by the rules. I like grammar and am good at explaining it clearly and simply--then it is up to you!
Proofreading

Proofreading

As a teenager, I spent summers working for my dad who was a printer. He allowed me to proofread a lot of the jobs he was working on, and that habit has stuck. I am a stickler for correct word choice, grammar and spelling. I went on to be an English major in college where I wrote about 85 papers. For one semester, I had a professor who was blind. To make sure our writing skills were up to par, he made us tape the papers for him--and we had to read our capitalization and punctuation into the tape as well. That experience made me highly aware of how I write. For the past 25 years, I have taught elementary students--proofreading is always required of any student is learning to write. The great thing is--I really enjoy proofreading--and I have continued to do it as a volunteer for my synagogue and other organizations when they are producing a pamphlet, journals, etc. Don't send me your wedding invitation, either, unless you want me to proof it as I read it (just kidding, sort of)!!

Elementary Education

Elementary (K-6th),

Elementary (K-6th)

I am certified K-12 in ESL and have taught most of the elementary school curriculum to my students. I have been taught current reading methods, such as FUNdations, and have used current Math texts as well.

Phonics,

Phonics

I have a degree in ESL. I have studied linguistics and, over my 25 years of teaching, have attended many workshops about teaching phonics--especially the Fundations system.
Reading,

Reading

There is nothing more frustrating than feeling like you cannot read at the same level as your peers. And reading is easier for some people than for others. But there are strategies and things to learn that can help readers who have not yet achieved total comfort with reading on their own. Working on those strategies can make a huge difference for you. I can't promise that you will become the best reader in the class--but you can become a better reader--and you can learn how to improve if you use these strategies. Let me show you how!
Spelling,

Spelling

Spelling can be tricky in English because the rules seem so crazy. Since our language came from so many different languages, the spelling of a word usually follows the rules of the language it came from--that makes it hard, since we don't know all those languages. By studying rules and grouping words that follow those rules, it becomes easier--not perfect, but easier. I can help you find the patterns that will make it simpler to do better at English spelling.
Study Skills,

Study Skills

I have been an ESL teacher for almost 23 years, and part of that work is helping students with classwork and test preparation. I am familiar with all the tests taken by elementary school students and some of the middle school tests as well. Part of helping students acquire language skills is showing them how to study. I work with their classroom teachers to help them develop the necessary skills to do well.
Vocabulary

Vocabulary

The best ways to develop vocabulary are to read and talk with people. The more words you hear, the more you know. Words allow us to express what we think in detail. My favorite part of vocabulary is idioms--they are so colorful and interesting. When we say "growing like a weed", it is much more interesting than saying "growing quickly", for example. Vocabulary brings richness to communication. Developing skills to help one learn vocabulary makes it easier to do as well. I have the skills to help you develop your vocabulary and benefit from it.

English

English,

English

As an English major in college, I have read many works of literature and written about most of them. I love reading, writing and grammar. I have also taken courses in linguistics, phonics and the history of English. I have studied 3 foreign languages as well--I just love the idea of how people communicate and helping people do it more appropriately, correctly and confidently. Let me teach you how to enjoy English, too!

There are lots of different kinds of writing and "rules" to use for each of these writing styles. As an experienced teacher, I can help you get better at using the rules--it's like practicing the piano. You get better when you play the right notes! I can't promise to make you the best writer in your class, but you can get a lot better if you work at using the rules. Here's the first rule--read lots of different kinds of things. Thank you!

Lisa, Thanks for the feedback. Spoke with Lucas about ‘crabbiness’ and he confirmed he will stay focused and on task the entire hour. Please let me know if otherwise, so I can address. I see a slight improvement in handwriting - brilliant! Please keep pushing him. :-)

Experienced and patient tutor

Lisa knows well on how and what to tutor new immigrants like me and my son. Other than learning the English basic, Lisa will bring and share with us the American culture and history, and interesting news and stories. We love having her around in the six months. Recommended to anyone who needs a boost on English.

Tutor responded:

Thank you for your kind words. I love teaching English both to adults and to children. Part of why I enjoy ESL so much is that I can use some of the time to teach about culture and history--and I was glad to have you share information about your country with me. It was my pleasure to work with both you and Rocky.

Great teacher!

Lisa was extremely patient with my 5 year old son and creative with her teaching methods. Lisa used several different games and teaching to help my son recognize the difference between short and long vowels. I feel confident, my son will start kindergarten in September with an advantage thanks to Lisa’s.

Very Knowledgeable on Grammar

Lisa is very knowledgeable on Grammar. She was able to correct mistakes I made in Grammar and was able to show me why my original answer was incorrect and why the correct answer was correct.

Great teacher!

Lisa is nice, patient and knowledgeable. My son loves to read with Lisa. He enjoys the weekly reading time. I believe it will improve his reading skills and develop an interest in reading over time.

Amazing!

Lisa has been fantastic. She's funny, patient and very knowledgeable. Her strategies and learning games are genius as well. I have noticed tremendous improvement in my 6 year old nephew. I look forward to having many more tutoring lessons with her and my nephew. I highly recommend her.
