Math may seem like some mysterious subject that only a few can comprehend, but that’s just not the case. Math may seem like some mysterious subject that only a few can comprehend, but that’s just not the case. Like any discipline, practice leads to proficiency, particularly when it is guided by an expert. Many people were only told what to do but never told why to do it, while others were never presented with an easy-to-follow, step-by-step process. I can help you unlock the mystery of mathematics and get you on the road to comprehension. In my time as a tutor and a teacher, I have instructed students at all stages of life and mathematical development—from third graders to adults in their 60's, from elementary math to college-level calculus.

In addition to tutoring in math, I also specialize in test preparation. Children and adults alike struggle with test anxiety—but again, it doesn't need to be that way! Improving one's score on a test not only means being familiar with the subject material, but also requires the right pacing, problem-solving strategies, and test-taking skills. In 10 years as a professional tutor, I have helped more than 300 students prepare for the SAT, ACT, ASVAB, GED, and GRE.

Writing is another area where I can provide assistance. For students working on their college essays, I can offer guidance on selecting a prompt, constructing a response, and editing the final draft. If you’re writing a paper, I can walk you through the entire process, from brainstorming to constructing a thesis to finding and citing references to editing. I’ll help you understand the rules of grammar, punctuation, and format, and I'm familiar with the MLA, APA, and Chicago schools of style.

Because tutoring is my full-time occupation, I can meet with students according to their availability, respond quickly to inquiries, and accommodate those who might need "emergency" tutoring. When the school year is over, I continue to work through the summer, meeting students' needs for online courses, test preparation, brushing up on skills, or working to get ahead.

Approved Subjects

ACT English

ACT English

Since 2014, I have helped more than 100 students prepare for the ACT English Test. My tutoring process includes a review of grammar and writing, as well as guiding students to master the pace necessary to to efficiently navigate 75 questions in only 45 minutes.
ACT Math

ACT Math

Over the past decade, I have helped more than 150 students prepare for the ACT Math test. Because the Math section consists entirely of multiple choice questions and permits the use of a calculator throughout, my goal is to teach the "ACT mindset"—a test-taking approach that utilizes content review, problem-solving strategies, and calculator skills. Most of my students have seen marked improvement, with several increasing their ACT Math scores by five or more points.
ACT Reading

ACT Reading

While the ACT Reading section is similar to that of SAT from 2016-23, it moves at a much faster pace. Part of my comprehensive ACT prep process is helping students adapt to the required pacing by making quick decisions and recognizing how to eliminate wrong answer choices.
ACT Science

ACT Science

Of the four sections of the ACT, the Science test is the most demanding from a timing perspective. The average student can understand, process, and answer the questions, but it takes practice to handle dense scientific writing and answer 40 questions in only 35 minute. As an experienced ACT tutor, I strive to teach the strategies necessary to navigate this section successfully.
Algebra 1

Algebra 1

Algebra is a course that many people need assistance with, and I have been able to direct students from a wide age range to be more confident in their math abilities. I have taught Algebra 1 at both the middle school and high school levels, but it's my experience as a math tutor over the past 10 years that has enabled me to hone my skills as an expert in algebra instruction.
Algebra 2

Algebra 2

Algebra 2 (which includes College Algebra) is one of my favorite math subjects, and as a certified math teacher, I've had the opportunity to teach it the classroom on multiple occasions. As a math tutor, I've helped well over 100 students gain confidence in their Algebra 2 capabilities. I strive to adjust my approach to meet each student's needs, as those who take this subject range from ninth graders to college age.
American History

American History

History is something that I enjoy studying and am passionate about learning. As an undergraduate, I minored in history, and after getting my M.Ed. I was certified as a middle school social studies teacher. American history is so often misrepresented in today's curricula, so working with a tutor can help a student get a grasp of the full scope of that history. Over the last decade, I've had the privilege of being the exclusive history teacher for two homeschool students for three full school years.
ASVAB

ASVAB

There are two stages to prepping for the ASVAB: achieving the minimum AFQT score (which is based on your math and reading ability) and getting the necessary section scores to qualify for your preferred military job. From the first session, we will determine which sections you need to focus on and what prep materials you should be using. The Arithmetic Reasoning and Mathematics Knowledge sections tend to give students the most difficulty, so I help them both understand the basics and learn the "tricks" necessary for a no-calculator test. Out of the more than 50 students I have worked with, those who had at least 10 sessions with me were able to pass the test and qualify for their desired job in the armed forces.
Bible Studies

Bible Studies

After years of spending time in churches and religious universities, I have a strong grasp of the structure, message, and historical background of the Bible. If you have a paper in biblical studies, I can help you understand context and determine meaning of whatever texts you're examining.
Calculus

Calculus

Calculus is my favorite discipline in mathematics, so I really enjoy teaching it. At the same time, I understand that plenty of students have difficulty understanding calculus. If you're taking Calculus 1 or 2 (including H.S. Advanced Placement courses), then I can certainly help you. Over the last decade I have worked with more than 60 calculus students, and all of them have both increased their levels of comprehension and improved their grades.
Elementary Math

Elementary Math

As an experienced math tutor and certified math teacher, I've seen a lot of student fall behind in math during their middle school years because they didn't have the necessary foundational skills that should have been taught in elementary school. The basics are arithmetic, organization, and following procedure, so I focus on those essentials when I tutor elementary students.
English

English

The English language has always fascinated me. It's the richest language on earth, but also the one with the most idiosyncrasies. I appreciate those quirks, however, and I actually enjoy grammar and editing. When it comes to helping students with writing assignments, my approach is to make sure that assignment is as smooth and sound as possible.
GED

GED

The GED Mathematical Reasoning Test is far and away the section most students need help with, but I provide expert help prepping for all four GED tests. From advice on what prep materials they should use to how to master the official GED calculator (TI-30XS MultiView), I guide students through the entire prep process. Since GED students are adult learners, I treat them as such, working with them to find the most efficient path for completing the goal of getting their high-school equivalency.
Geography

Geography

As a certified social studies teacher, I have taught geography in classroom situations. Geography is one of my fascinations--a hobby of sorts. I thoroughly enjoy studying maps and investigating the links between geography and history.
Geometry

Geometry

Geometry is one of my favorite subjects to teach because it's such a logical subject. Students who master geometry think in a more structured manner and are able to present argument more effectively. In my 10 years as a professional tutor, I have had the opportunity to work with more than 30 geometry students in geometry, all of whom improved in understanding and performance.
Government & Politics

Government & Politics

No subject in recent years has intrigued me more than government and politics. I have studied the Constitution and the history of the court cases dealing with it, and I feel that I am an "expert layman" in that department. My approach to politics is not rooted in any particular political philosophy, but rather centers on historical record, pertinent law, and founding documents. As a homeschool teacher, I was able to guide the governmental and political education of two students for three full school years.
Grammar

Grammar

Grammar, punctuation, and word use are areas that have always interested me. After math and history, grammar is my favorite topic to teach. As an adult, I continue to learn about proper grammar, even reading books such as "The Grouchy Grammarian," which details the 47 mistakes most commonly made by professional writers. I know my grammar, and I know how to explain its rules to others.
GRE

GRE

Taking the GRE can be intimidating, particularly if it's been a few years since you were in undergraduate school. That's why I focus precisely on what each individual student needs to do in order to navigate the test, from prep materials to a study plan to practice tests. Of the more than 30 students I have worked with, all of them needed help with the Quantitative Reasoning section, so I seek to teach the fundamentals and the test-taking skills necessary to get the score you're looking for.
Homeschool

Homeschool

Since becoming a full-time professional tutor, I have worked with more than 20 homeschool students from several families. I have tutored students exclusively online, including three from Taiwan, and I have worked with an entire family (four children) over a four-year span. With both a 6th grader and a junior/senior in high school, I was their social studies teacher, and I served as the math teacher for two homeschool students over the course of an entire school year. My experience ranges from elementary math with a 10-year old to ACT prep with a senior.
Prealgebra

Prealgebra

When I was a schoolteacher, Prealgebra was the subject I taught the most. A strong foundation in algebra is critical for any student to be able to succeed in high school mathematics, so as a tutor, I've worked one-on-one with many students to improve proficiency and boost confidence in their prealgebra skills.
Precalculus

Precalculus

As a schoolteacher, I have taught both precalculus and calculus, and as a math tutor, I have worked with both high school and college students who were learning precalculus.. Calculus is my favorite area of mathematics, so I know how essential it is for a student to have the necessary fundamental tools when that course begins.
Proofreading

Proofreading

Whether you want a quick proofread or a more extensive copyedit, I can help you with anything you're writing. Once we connect, you can send me your draft, and I'll make sure to correct mistakes, tighten up sentences, and polish your writing.
PSAT

PSAT

The PSAT, which is also the NMSQT (National Merit Scholarship Qualifying Test), is given to juniors, but there are also versions of the PSAT given in 8th, 9th, and 10th grades. In October 2023, the PSAT will switch to a new digital format, and I have already been preparing students for that test. The PSAT will now be the same length as the SAT, so all preparation put toward it will translate to the SAT.
Religion

Religion

My specialty is the Judeo-Christian religious denominations. For many years, I was a member of local Christian church, and I have attended Bob Jones University and Liberty University. I have taken multiple courses on the Judeo-Christian religions, including courses in the BILD (Biblical Institute of Leadership Development) curriculum. Over the course of about 20 years, I taught Bible courses at the elementary, middle school, high school, and adult levels.
SAT Math

SAT Math

As a test prep tutor, I have helped more than 500 students get ready for the SAT by providing comprehensive preparation across three versions of the test, including the current digital SAT. Beyond just teaching the necessary subject matter, I aim to instill problem-solving strategies, test-taking skills, and calculator proficiency as well, thus preparing students completely for the SAT Math section.

Social Studies

Social Studies

Whether your need is understanding social studies or writing a paper in the social sciences, I can provide expert guidance. For two years, I served as the homeschool social studies teacher for one high school student, and for another year I directed the social studies education of a homeschooled middle school student. At the college level, I have helped more than 10 students write social science papers, walking them through the processes of structure, argument, and editing.
Statistics

Statistics

Statistics have always fascinated me, and I find them to be one of the necessary foundational pieces of knowledge people need to navigate the world. As a tutor, I have helped students ranging from teens to senior citizens with their statistics courses.
Trigonometry

Trigonometry

As a teacher, I taught both precalculus and calculus, meaning that I also worked extensively with trigonometry. Trigonometry often requires one-on-one help, especially when it comes to graphing. As a tutor, I've been able to help a number of students comprehend the material and improve their performances.
Writing

Writing

Using my ability to effectively explain the fine points of grammar, diction, and argument, I have assisted many people with the planning, composing, and editing of their essays and papers. In addition to helping a number of students construct their college application essays, I have provided expert copyediting for final drafts of formal papers. At whatever stage of the writing process you are in, I can jump in and help develop and perfect your paper.

Amazing Tutor

I have been taking math and English lessons with Jonathan for the last 2 years. He has helped me so much in not just understanding math, but also making me feel confident in my skills. He's extremely responsive and flexible with schedule changes. I can't recommend him enough. I got my SAT score from the 1200s to the mid 1400s with his help. He also has a lot of knowledge about the SAT itself and test taking.

Excellent Teacher with patience to spare

Jonathan certainly knows his stuff and how to teach it in ways that worked for me. As someone who's not the strongest in quantitive analysis, he's helped him understand the topic better. He is very patient and he allows to make my mistakes without making me feel like terrible about them. Then he helps you correct those mistakes to help me improve and not make them again. I'd him recommend to anyone.
