I'm Nathaniel, a high school graduate currently enrolled at Portland Community College. As an Academic Mentor, I am committed to a collaborative tutoring approach with flexible availability, cost, and methods to ensure that you are fully supported. I hope to work with high, middle, and elementary schoolers, or adults who need similar support in my areas of expertise. I strive to compassionately and thoughtfully guide you to your own version of success.

How we spend our time during a session is entirely up to you. However, my usual session format begins with a check-in to connect with one another, briefly outline our goals for the session, and develop our action plan. Then, the majority of the session may involve working through examples, brainstorming, supported work-time, and anything else relevant to the topics.

In terms of related experience, I have been a Teacher’s Assistant, most notably at Ida B. Wells High School in my Neurodiversity and Self Advocacy course in the 2024-2025 school year and Portland Jewish Academy's Summer Discovery Program in 2023. Both involved guiding high schoolers and 4th/5th graders respectively through learning-based tasks while maintaining high organization and sensitivity to each students' specific needs. With experiences like these, I am also equipped to work with a diverse range of people, especially neurodiverse learners.

Although I am not a certified teacher, I have significant experience in the subjects that I tutor. I graduated from IBW High School with honors and a 4.11 weighted GPA. Furthermore, I passed six AP exams: English Language and Composition, Statistics, Biology, Chemistry, Environmental Science, and Human Geography, which granted me the AP Scholar with Distinction Award in 2025. In addition, I received a strong SAT score (1300) and obtained A's in nearly all of my classes with a focus in Writing, Algebra, Statistics, Biology, Chemistry, Social Studies, and more.
I would be delighted to work with and support you in your personal learning journey.

Approved Subjects

Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD)

Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD)

I was a Teacher's Assistant for my high school's Neurodiversity & Self-Advocacy course, which aimed to support students with IEPs in their classes and skills related to Autism/ADHD. My role in this course was to work with the students and teachers to figure out how to best support their learning and individual growth. In particular, I would assist students with organization, time management, informational presentations, and support then in various subjects (math, etc.). I am incredibly passionate about supporting those with Autism and I have had a lot of experience (professionally and personally) being an advocate and mentor for children and peers with Autism/Neurodiversity.
Chess

Chess

I have been playing chess since I was very young and have taken multiple intermediate chess courses at Portland State University's campus. I have since continued to play at a competitive chess level during my free time. While I have had a good amount of personal experience teaching others chess (family, friends, peers), its been in an informal setting. Due to only recently pursuing more professional teaching of chess, I will only guarantee that I can teach at a beginner level, but I am confident I will help new/beginner chess players have a better understanding the game. I plan to go over various important aspects of learning skills in chess, including openings, piece movement, game structure, flow/dynamics, and anything else relevant that I am qualified to guide and teach.
Essay Writing

Essay Writing

I have completed an AP English Language & Composition course and test, which gave me direct experience and skill in essay writing of various formats. I have gotten A's in every English class I've taken, I'm taking writing classes in college, and I have proven myself to consistently be a strong formal writer, who has a niche in helping others with their own writing. I have expertise in revision, editing, proofreading, and content creation, which I will continue to utilize as I help others with their essay writing endeavors.
Executive Functioning

Executive Functioning

I was a Teacher's Assistant for my high school's Neurodiversity & Self-Advocacy course, which aimed to support students with IEPs in their classes and work on Executive Functioning skills. My role in this course was to work with the students and teachers to figure out how to best support student's learning and individual growth. In particular, I would support students with organizational, time management, and preparation skills, to help them succeed in various subjects (math, English, etc.). I am incredibly passionate about supporting those with Executive Functioning difficulties and I have had a lot of experience (professionally and personally) being an advocate and mentor for children and peers. As a tutor for Executive Functioning, I aim to problem solve with those I work with to develop strategies and skills that help manage/reduce individual struggles with the goal of improving academic performance and quality of life.
