About Julie

I have a PhD and lots of experience teaching English. I have taught literature and writing to students from 1st grade through college. I like to make learning fun, and my method of teaching writing is particularly effective. I help students with their essays for lots of classes from middle school through grad school but especially English, AP History, AP Art History, Humanities, and Philosophy. I also find helping students improve their SAT and ACT scores and write winning college entrance essays very rewarding. The materials I use for improving reading, vocabulary, and grammar skills work quickly to improve scores. I have some great success stories. Let me know if you'd like to see my references. And while I'm not a native speaker of French, I love the language and culture and am experienced and successful at teaching introductory French in ways that make it fun for young or old. I also enjoy teaching introductory Spanish. I have several Spanish students currently that can tell you how I have helped them to succeed in their high school Spanish courses. Let me know if I can help! I have a PhD and lots of experience teaching English. I have taught literature and writing to students from 1st Read more

I am sad to hear that Sharon is unhappy at this point with her daughter’s progress in writing. I should mention that I was never told to focus specifically on punctuation. I was not notified of a punctuation test and had no part in helping Alyssa study for it. Alyssa and I have been working on many aspects of writing: organization, clarity, formality, paragraph development and style. In all of these areas, I have seen improvement. We have also been working on writing complete sentences and correcting run-ons. In this area, she has also improved. She understands how to correct them (at no point did I correct them for her), but she sometimes forgets to proofread for run-ons before class. I also find Sharon and Alyssa to be very nice people. Many times over the past few months, Sharon has given me positive feedback about Alyssa’s writing skills as when Alyssa was the best in her class at identifying thesis statements. Sharon also liked the way I encouraged Alyssa to write about challenging topics such as her favorite political candidate. It is sad that our lessons are ending on a negative note. I would be happy to refund lesson money or do whatever it takes to make this right. I have told Sharon as much but have not heard back from her. I sincerely wish both of them the very best!

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

Elementary (K-6th)

I have a teaching credential for California for High School English. In addition, I have completed coursework toward an elementary credential including educational theory, child development, elementary math, a reading specialist course, as well as many writing workshops. Most importantly, I have experience teaching grades K-6th in a private girls' school in California. I am also homeschooling my own children and tutoring many others of elementary ages.

I have a PhD and over 10 years experience helping students succeed in English. I have taught English Literature at the high school and college levels and love to help students understand literature. I have also taught writing in both high school and college and have great methods that help students improve quickly and become confident writers.

For many years, I have taught English classes at the high school and college levels that were more than 50% non-native speakers of English. I have taken classes and attended seminars to learn how best to serve these populations. My experience and training has allowed me to help students achieve their goals quickly and effectively.

SAT Reading

I enjoy helping students improve their reading skills through vocabulary improvement, identifying the main idea, narrowing choices, identifying tone, making inferences, etc. I have great materials for quick improvement and have seen a lot of impressive improvement.

I have many years' experience teaching Spanish to students of all ages. My PhD is in Comparative Literatures, which means I studied literature in different languages, one of which was Spanish. In addition to studying Spanish at the graduate level, I also lived and taught in Mexico City. I like to make learning languages practical and fun.

The Best!! — Ms. Julie has been of great help this past months. I would not have been able to get accepted to Yale without her help. She helped me with my essays from the beginning to the very end, always there through every step of the way. She also helped me with with anything I needed for my AP English class. She always finds the time to help me, even with my crazy schedule. She is truly the best!! ...
