My goal in teaching is to share my love of learning and the passion that I have for growing and discovering with my students. Whether they are an absolute beginning student, intermediate student or are returning to a certain area of learning after a break, I wish to tailor lessons to both the family’s and the student’s personal goals.

I am a life-long-learner and educator living in Portland, Oregon. I earned a Bachelor of Arts degree in Guidance and Counseling then spent several years in missionary service while living in the U.S. and in 3 different Spanish-speaking countries. I offered volunteer tutoring to elementary and middle school students who were learning English as a second language. I also grew through those multicultural experiences and learned Spanish as my second language. After returning to live in Portland, Oregon, I spent 12 years as a paraeducator and tutor at the elementary school level, mostly in the David Douglas School District.

As a trained and experienced educator, I equip all of my students with effective techniques for maintaining relaxed, efficient learning. I offer a variety of ways to approach learning in the classroom and various activities and experiences from which to choose. Though passionate about teaching, I love to assist students in finding their own style of learning so that they can discover meaningful ways to learn. I have been serving as an instructor and tutor at the elementary school level for over 12 years, mostly in the David Douglas School District. I teach students of all grade levels on a day to day basis in both small group settings and individually. Benchmark testing is also regular part of the process towards helping students to grow and succeed. Throughout my years of teaching experience I have also benefited from regular professional development trainings.

I have homeschooled 3 students over a 5-year span. Partnering with students and their families in this way allows for a level of collaboration that is unique to the homeschooling experience. Another huge benefit has been the individuality of each student’s learning process. Each student thrives with unique learning strategies and this freedom to discover what works best for them individually helps them to find their own style of learning.

Great Spanish Tutor for Elementary School Student!

My daughter is going into 5th grade. She takes Spanish at school but we don't speak Spanish at home. She wanted to work on her Spanish language skills to build some confidence over the Summer break. We found Shirley and she has been a wonderful, consistent instructor for my daughter this summer. We liked that Shirley made their lessons fun with games and stories. Shirley is very warm and patient, and was very open to listening to my daughter and what she wanted to work on. Shirley had ideas about things my daughter could do between sessions to practice her Spanish that my daughter appreciated and enjoyed. Shirley was always very responsive regarding scheduling and other logistics. We were thrilled to find her and are grateful for her work!
