I specialize in tutoring for students at the elementary age. My passion is giving students the skills they need to become confident and joyful readers. I am patient, friendly, and take a compassionate and positive approach to teaching. My method is to take the child from where they are in reading and build upon those skills.
I have 30+ years experience in a Montessori classroom. I believe all children are unique and learn in unique ways. Finding a child's learning style whether it is visual, auditory, kinesthetic, or a combination of two or three styles, is the key to helping them reach their reading potential. I also have training in the Lindamood-Bell Approach for phonological and orthographic processes for reading fluency and spelling, and the Lindamood-Bell Approach for cognitive development, comprehension, and thinking.
Learning is fun! Becoming better at any skill is rewarding. Learning helps you become more confident in yourself. Rewarding pursuits, and confidence are natural ways to strengthen your self esteem. I cannot say how much I appreciate Julie. Amarie is so excited about schoo1!. A little background on my family ... Amarie is my cousin. She is in 2nd grade. Amarie has hearing difficulties and struggled in school last year. The school recommended that Amarie repeat 1st grade. Our family knew that this would devastate Amarie. She just needed a little extra help. Aside from the hearing issue, Amarie feels easily defeated when she gets something wrong.
I spoke with Amarie's Mom (my cousin Jade) and we agreed that a home tutor could help. Amarie really loves Julie. She told me she feels smart now that she has her own 'teacher'. I look forward to working more with Julie. Julie has a god given talent when working with children, a true blessing for my family.
Wow! Thank you for such kind words! Amarie should feel smart because she is. I look forward to working with her for as long as you want/need me. Thank you!
I think that Ms. Julie is doing an excellent job with my son. She is keeping his attention which is a BIG PLUS!! He is very easily distracted. Overall I think she is a very good tutor
Millicent, it is a pleasure to work with your fine young man. I know he will succeed with anything and everything he puts his mind to. He has got what it takes to soar.
In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.
I hold a Bachelor's degree in English Literature from Butler University, Indianapolis, Indiana, 1995. I hold a permanent Non Tax Certificate from the State of Ohio Department of Education to teach all subjects to Elementary age students in any Non-Tax supported school. Over the past 30 years I taught all subjects to students ages 6-14 at a private Montessori School that is chartered by the State of Ohio Department of Education.
As a teacher in a private Montessori school we would often have students that came from other countries and had to learn English. I was always amazed at how quickly young minds could pick up a new language!
I have taught basic handwriting, D'Nealian, and Cursive writing to elementary students for over thirty years. Using the correct tools, a good pencil plus grip when needed, and paper with a colored base line, dotted mid line and and colored headline are essential. With beginning scribers it is helpful to start with tactile lessons such as writing in sand and writing on a textured board.
My Montessori training covered all the basics of learning sounds of letters, phonemes, phonograms, and consonants blends. Training in the Lindamood-Bell Processes added greater depth to this knowledge--rules for exceptions to phonetic rules were covered and new phonics skills were added. Some basic work in the Orton-Gillingham approach has also strengthened my skills.
I am Lindamood-Bell trained to tutor Reading in Seeing Stars and Visualizing and Verbalizing.
