He was always patient with me when I had many questions and he had no problem repeating his answers and describing the processes over again to complete the **math** problems until I understood how to solve the **math** problems. His high knowledge in **math** was evident when he showed me several different processes and **math** formulas to help me achieve the same answer in a much easier way to solve a difficult **math** problem.

Most "**math** people" find **math** so instinctual that they tend to zip through an explanation. Kirk asks me what my goals are for the lesson each time. Then he concentrates on that thing only. If I ask him for broader basic concepts, he does that, too. I had an open-notes **math** midterm test last night (basic algebra, equation of the line, functions, graphing, etc.). I got an A. I don't think I have ever had an A on a **math** test in my life, let alone under these circumstances.

My approach to pre-algebra is slightly different from what the text books cover. This gives the student a "second" way of working out the problems and an alternate way of trying to understand the basis of the various operations.

When taking the SAT math, I received a perfect score of 800. Since then I have worked with students in both sophomore and junior years to raise their grades on the SAT by about 200 points across the board. Being an organic chemist requires a lot of math, and it's one of my strongest subjects.

Elementary math is the time to establish patterns and basic algorithms. Though these terms can be transparent from the student they are none the less vital. I tailor each lesson to the individual students needs and constantly reinforce patterns and algorithms. Integrated into the lessons are fundamental concepts of algebra and geometry.

As part of requirements to pass national examinations in elementary math, I took a specialized course about the kinds of problems students need to solve. I had much of my instruction from a retired math teacher. Another resource which provides an interdisciplinary approach is the Discovery Channel's Culture and Math series of DVDS. These presentations begin with Ancient Egypt. There are examples of the spread of new concepts from Ancient Egypt to Ancient Greece. Other topics include Roman and Arabic contributions. Mayan math and its base-20 standard receives attention in this series. In July, 2011, I completed a three-day course, Response to Intervention in Math. I have a book and handouts which accompanied the course which covers fractions, decimals, percentages, and strategies for solving word problems. I also have sample 8-minute tests to determine the progress of students with low scores on standardized tests. I have information about a variety of websites and math games to motivate students who need additional help in math.
