Approved subjects are in bold.

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

College Counseling

As an Academic Coach for 7th-12th graders for the past four years, I have experience working with students to help them understand what is needed to prepare for college. I work with seniors to develop a timeline so they know what is required for college admission. Students in younger grades are assisted with understanding the importance of GPA, the scholarship process, what colleges look for in students and how to complete an application and write an essay.

Elementary (K-6th)

I have five years experience tutoring students in grades K-6th. I have tutored in the areas of reading, spelling and language arts. For reading students, my strategy is to give them a reading test to determine their reading level. I have five years experience developing lesson plans to fit each individual student. Although my degrees are not in the area of Education, I have taken approximately 16 hours of intensive writing courses geared towards elementary students.

English

I have several years experience working with students to improve their grammar and writing skills. We can develop a lesson plan tailored to the areas you wish to improve.

ESL/ESOL

I have over six years experience tutoring ESL students on various learning levels. While working on my thesis, I completed a course that helped me to develop a curriculum for various levels of ESL students. Some students need help with learning ABC's, basic words, grammar (parts of speech, tense), writing sentences, and understanding the meaning of words. Other students require intermediate grammar and writing lessons. Advanced students generally require some help developing their writing skills or gaining confidence in speaking.

Proofreading

Sometimes proofreading a paper can be frustrating. How many times have you turned in a paper only to find errors later. I have over 10 years experience reviewing papers and making suggestions to help students turn in a paper that flows and meets your professors approval. In addition, completing my Master's Degree has helped me to develop and improve my writing skills.

Reading

Reading is fundamental to the success of our students. If they do not comprehend what they are reading at an early age, they will have a hard time adjusting as they get older. When I work with students, I like to do an assessment to see what level they are on. From there we develop a reading plan that details various benchmarks to be accomplished. Additionally, we work on strategies that will assist the student in reading comprehension. The ultimate goal is for the student to love and comprehend what they read!

Study Skills

I have 2 years experience teaching students about developing study skills. Students take three assessments in order to better assist them in improving their study skills. The first assessment determines the student's learning style. The second assessment helps the student find out about their study habits and attitudes. The third assessment evaluates the places they study. Once students have this information they are able to develop their own study plan based on their results. Students who have participated in my workshops gain a better understanding of how their learning style and study environment affect their study habits. In addition, they can see what areas in terms of study skills need improving. They walk away with a realistic plan that will help them develop and maintain better study habits.

Writing

I have over ten years experience writing in various styles. My educational background (a Bachelors and Masters) has provided me with tremendous experience writing essays as well as legal research papers. I have conducted several workshops on Writing the Essay and College Level Writing. Additionally, I have experience working with students to prepare them for college level writing.

Great Tutor

I am very much pleased with Charlotte's patience and interaction with 7 year old. My daughter is very much enjoying her Writing lessons and looks forward to them. Teaching a younger student via Skype can be a bit challenging but Charlotte has made the process fun and enjoyable for her.
