Qualifications for “Math”

Regardless of how you might feel about standardized testing, the SATs are a real part of the college application process. In addition to knowing the material backwards and forwards, part of doing your best on the SATs is knowing how to take the exam.

Working from a review book geared towards maximizing scores, Michal will take your child through the chapters, one by one, and explain each concept to solidify understanding. She will then make sure that the skills associated with the concept are strong before moving on to the next skill set. Along the way, strategies for taking the exam successfully will be covered. Michal recommends beginning tutoring at least three months in advance of the test, to allow ample time for practice tests and tutoring sessions.

Algebra 1,

Algebra 1

Algebra can seem like a scary subject at first. Many students find themselves feeling intimidated by the introduction of letters into equations, and struggle with the concept of a function as a graph. Michal can break down these ideas into simple concepts that are easy to visualize, allowing your child's creativity to shine through in solving difficult challenges.
Algebra 2,

Algebra 2

Building on the concepts from algebra 1 and the knowledge of shapes and solids, algebra 2 will teach your child how to apply the rules of the spatial world to the coordinate plane. When applying the idea of secants and tangents from circles to a graph of a function, students might need guidance in conceptualizing what exactly they are doing. Michal will bring out a genuine understanding, so that by the time your child completes the course, he or she will be ready to tackle Trigonometry and Precalculus.
Calculus,

Calculus

Calculus is one of the most beautiful and elegant areas of math. Thinking of finite functions in infinite terms might feel counterintuitive, but it is the way we can find exact instantaneous figures for a constantly changing world. The first time a student sees a derivative, it generally either makes perfect sense, or none at all. Let Michal work through the process to reach that "aha" moment with your child.
Geometry,

Geometry

Many people wonder why geometry is taught between algebra 1 and 2. Students need to develop a basic understanding of shapes and their properties, along with the application of basic algebra to those shapes. Geometry is also the first encounter most children have with proofs. In order to succeed in geometry, your child must develop a clear plan for approaching proofs, as well as learn how to think spatially. Michal can help develop that thought process.
Prealgebra,

Prealgebra

With the movement from the simplicity of four functions into the idea of properties of those functions, many children might feel lost. Rather than being asked to follow a process that can be accomplished by counting physical objects, they now have to develop a deep understanding of the rules governing how numbers can be manipulated. Rather than using memorization, Michal takes an "understand the idea at its core" approach. If a student knows the basic premise behind an idea, it can be derived every time, rather than using valuable brain space memorizing.
Precalculus,

Precalculus

Precalculus is a stepping stone to understanding all the foundations of calculus. Knowing the limit of a function or how to work with sequences and series can feel a bit daunting, but these ideas are an important part of the learning process. If your child is struggling with his or her precalculus course, contact Michal. Many of these concepts can be illustrated in real world scenarios, and Michal can explain them in a way that will make your child say, "oh, that's so simple!"

Excellent tutor -- very patient

Michal is an excellent tutor. She is not only a subject matter expert but more than that, has the patience to understand the individual and pursue strategies based on that individual's particular learning style/needs. I highly recommend her.

great and patient

Michal explains everything in a way that makes it easy to understand. She is patient and goes over everything until my granddaughter is sure she knows it. My granddaughter is finally doing well in pre-calculus and we are extremely happy.

Excellent tutor

My son was having difficulty with Calculus and needed urgent help prior to a test. Michal responded quickly and provided the help he needed just days before the test. She has an excellent understanding of Calculus and we will also be asking her to help my other son with Geometry.

Outstanding Tutor

I highly recommend Michal. She has really helped my son to accelerate in math. He is so much more confident since he started meeting with her weekly. She is really good at figuring out where there are gaps in his knowledge and skills and then closing those gaps. She is pleasant, patient and reliable. We feel so lucky to have her as my son's tutor.

Excellent tutor with patience of a saint

I hired Michal to tutor me in a lgebra and she was a great help. I have a learning disability and she was very patient. I will be using her to tutor me in statistics next semester.

Michal is a wonderful tutor

Michal is very smart, clear and reliable. She teaches my daughter why things work, not just rote memorization. My daughter enjoys learning from her. Her grades have definitely improved since starting the tutoring.

She isn't available

Michal canceled on us twice on the same day she was due to come, citing "meetings", weather, etc. I said we'd be available anytime but she said she was too busy. My daughter has a test this Thursday and we are now scrambling to find someone to help her. Not very professional, and I'd say if you need someone you can truly depend on week to week, give this one a miss.

Tutor responded:

I appreciate the difficulty of your situation, and I certainly understand your frustration. I would like to clarify that you often asked me to come to your house at the last minute, which I happily did, although it put a major strain on my schedule. Most of my students find that I am extremely responsive, and often available at the drop of a hat. Unfortunately, the roads were very icy one week, forcing me to cancel for the sake of safety, and the following week, I had a professional development meeting at my school (as teachers tend to have) that went late into the evening. The two hours that you were scheduled for each week were literally the only two hours I had left in my schedule. I have a cancellation policy of 24 hours' notice, which is posted on my page, but I did not charge you for a lesson last month that was cancelled at the last moment. I did quite enjoy working with your daughter, and wish her all the best in her future endeavors.

Very Happy to have Michal!

Michal is very relaxed and encourages thoughtful approaches to the problems. The typical Math tension doesn't exist in her sessions, and my son is learning and not frustrated! I think Michal is a great Math tutor!
