I have been working in the technology space since 2009, as both an IT professional and a programmer. I currently work as a Senior Programmer Analyst at the University of Rochester. I also, since 2019 have run my own IT Consulting firm that assists small and medium businesses with their IT needs. I hold several key certifications, as well as an associates degree in Computer Systems development and maintenance. Over the past 10 years of tutoring I have used it as a way to both share knowledge and keep myself sharp on new and upcoming technologies.

Within the IT field, my specialties are:

Linux and Unix systems
PC Hardware
Cybersecurity
Networking
Microsoft 365
Shell Scripting and automation

As a programmer, I work primarily with the following languages and technologies

Python
Java
C#
C
Ruby
Unity
MySQL

That said, I've worked with many technologies outside this shortlist. For a more comprehensive description, check out my GitHub
https://github.com/C-Norton

As a tutor, I focus on developing curricula individualized to the student, and focusing on building foundational skills in order to empower the student to solve problems both in the present and future, rather than focusing on immediate tasks. I do not, however, allow this focus to come to the detriment of grades and deadlines.

Approved Subjects

C

C

I have worked in C since 2017. I personally feel that C is a key technology to understand for a comprehensive understanding of Computer Science at the collegiate level.
C#

C#

C# is perhaps tied with Python for my single favorite programming language. I often use it to build small games using the Unity Game Engine. I have also worked with .Net core and, to a lesser extent, the .Net Framework.
C++

C++

I began learning C++ in 2011 and am also HIGHLY proficient in C, which is a very similar language. C++ is far from my first choice in most scenarios, but I am proficient in it.
Computer Programming

Computer Programming

I have been programming since 2011. I also possess a degree in computer systems programming and administration. Beyond my coursework, I've supplemented my knowledge with numerous personal projects, and honed my skills by tutoring. I also serve as a Senior Programmer Analyst for the University of Rochester.
Computer Science

Computer Science

I am a computer scientist who has been working to help learners in the field for since 2016. I have several years as a freelance application developer, as well as my work at the University of Rochester as a Senior Programmer Analyst. I specialize foundational programming to high school and early collegiate students.
CSS

CSS

In my role as a Senior Programmer Analyst at the University of Rochester, a significant portion of my job is customizing webpages that are difficult or impossible for our frontend developer to inject code into. As such, while it is not a primary responsibility of mine, understanding and parsing CSS, especially as it interacts with other technologies (primarily Ruby and PHP) is essential for me to be able to perform my duties.
General Computer

General Computer

I'm a 4th year computer science student, and have been working technical support for 7 years. I hold certifications from CompTIA and Microsoft.
Information Technology

Information Technology

I am a long time systems administrator, who has been in full time IT work since 2014. I have administered both Linux and windows centric environments. I specialize in network services and Linux administration. I am experienced in Cisco packet tracer, Wireshark, and more.
Java

Java

I have been a Java developer since 2017, and have used it both in academic settings, as well as in my career. I have been tutoring Java since 2019.
JavaScript

JavaScript

As a software engineer, I work with JavaScript whenever I do frontend work. I most recently built a full stack app using express, nodejs, and react to perform OAuth and SAML authentication to provide access to a postgres database
Linux

Linux

In my career as an IT professional, I've held multiple positions that required high degrees of Linux proficiency. A prior position required I maintain approximately 200 RedHat, Rocky, and CentOS Linux servers deployed both in Fortune 1000 scale network environments and in AWS. My current position requires I am partial administrator to about 70 servers running Ubuntu. Additionally, I have used desktop distributions of Linux for my workstation operating system intermittently for over 10 years now.
Microsoft 365

Microsoft 365

I have been a systems administrator with a significant part of several roles being Microsoft 365 admin work since 2016. In addition to the core office applications, I work heavily in the admin center, the partner center, and exchange. I am a Microsoft 365 certified reseller.
Microsoft Windows

Microsoft Windows

I have been a systems administrator for many years. I have worked thoroughly in Microsoft dominated environments, culminating with my starting a small business providing technical support in a Microsoft stack to small businesses. I would love to help aspiring systems administrators or those looking to build foundational computer skills.
Networking (Computer)

Networking (Computer)

Throughout my career, I have served in a number of IT roles, culminating with the co-founding of my own IT outsourcing company in 2020. My current role as a Senior Programmer Analyst at the University of Rochester has me, in addition to my duties writing code, serving as a partial administrator for ~70 servers, largely running Ubuntu Linux.
PHP

PHP

In my role at the University of Rochester, I was asked to learn PHP in order to maintain a number of legacy systems reliant on this technology.
Python

Python

I have developed a full suite of instructional materials designed to introduce new learners at the high school level and beyond to computer programming through Python. I have been using the language since 2016 in professional, personal, and educational settings. I have been tutoring it for most of that time. Python is, of the many languages I am proficient in, my favorite, and most used.
Ruby

Ruby

In my time at the University of Rochester, I was required by my work to pick up Ruby as a programming language. I have now written several major projects in this language in line of my work.
SQL

SQL

As a software engineering professional, I have had to work with SQL intermittently throughout my career. I am most familiar with the H2, Firebird, Postgres, and MySQL dialects of the language.
UNIX

UNIX

Nobody uses proper UNIX these days, instead, Unix derivatives are used. I'm highly proficient in Linux, and most of my programming work targets Unix/posix compliant environments, requiring a decent understanding of how things work under the hood. I've considered switching to OpenBSD, and have played around in VMs a few times, as well as used PFsense sparingly. See Linux qualifications.

Excellent tutor that is good with programming

I am currently learning python from Channing. He is able to adeptly explain complicated concepts in an easy way and teach how to understand and build code from scratch. Highly recommended.

Knowledgable and patient tutor

Channing was very patient and understanding with me. He would explain difficult concepts in ways anyone can understand. If I needed more clarification he would pivot and explain it in a different way so that I would be able to understand. Overall very happy with Channing and I am looking forward to having more lessons with him!

Unprofessional and Overcharged me.

I requested a 1-hour session with Channing, he was late to the session and then proceeded to charge me for a 90-minute lesson that I didn't receive. When I asked for a refund he declined and cited a cancellation policy that was not obvious at all. STAY AWAY.

Sam, 1 lesson with Channing

Very knowledgeable and patient

Tries to find where you are coming from and where your problem is, then uses different analogies to explain a concept till he has the feeling you actually get it.

Moneta, 2 lessons with Channing

Thorough, patient and honest

Channing explains things in an easily understandable manner. He takes the time to relate concepts and does not waist time. I highly recommend Channing.
