I bring to my tutoring an extensive and varied educational and work history. After several years of running a small institute dedicated to professional development and public programs on issues of children, childhood, and education, I returned to teaching and tutoring adults and children, with a focus on teaching English to speakers of other languages (ESOL), reading, and writing. I have a background in program development and administration, ranging from a pilot program for graduate students of journalism to a university writing center to weeklong professional development institutes for teachers and other child development specialists. In addition to higher education, I have worked in nonprofit theatre, public library, and retail settings. As a freelance tutor, I have taught both English language learners and native English speakers at all ages and levels. I am a writer, photographer, and audio storyteller/producer, and I seek opportunities to use those tools to encourage and support reading, literacy, and language learning in any format. I hold a Master of Arts from New York University in Teaching English to Non-Native English Speakers at the College and Adult Level and a Bachelor of Arts from the University of California at Santa Barbara in Law and Society.

I am an avid reader, a writer, and an editor. I also studied English grammar and linguistics extensively as part of my graduate degree in teaching English to non-native speakers. My understanding of English grammar has been expanded even further by my own studies of other languages, and that has in turn shaped my teaching of the subject.

Although I ultimately decided to focus on college and adult education for my master's degree, I also took graduate level courses in child development, observation and participatory experience with children, and elementary education. I completed classroom observations in Pre-K through 6th grade classes. I returned to teaching and tutoring after several years of working on the administrative side of higher education, running a small institute dedicated to professional development and public programs on issues of children, childhood, and education. In addition to my work as a freelance reading, writing, and ESOL tutor, I have provided after-school homework help to elementary students at a nonprofit writing and tutoring center and taught an after-school reading class for fifth graders. I also taught gymnastics to K-4th grade students in an after-school program for two years. Furthermore, I was the youth coordinator in a public library for two years, working with children, teens, teachers, and parents to meet their literacy and research needs. I am able to relate well to learners from diverse backgrounds, with a wide range of goals. I am familiar with a variety of disciplines and research techniques, from the perspectives of both teacher and learner. Helping people, becoming familiar with new places and ideas, and finding and conveying information have been integral parts of almost every job I have had.

I have taught reading to Fifth Grade students in an after-school program. I have also provided one-to-one reading tutoring to students ranging from Pre-K to graduate school. While working as the youth coordinator in the children's room of a public library, I facilitated book groups for elementary and middle school students, developed reading and homework help programs, and provided reference and readers advisory assistance to all ages. As an avid reader myself, connecting learners to the world of words is a true joy.

Cheryl has done a wonderful job engaging my daughter!

We started working with Cheryl with the goal of helping my teenage daughter, who has a language processing issue, bump up her reading and writing skills. My daughter understood the importance of the work but quite frankly, was not thrilled about it. The first time we met Cheryl, she proved to be really professional and knowledgable. Most importantly, she exhibited a genuine interest in getting to know my daughter as an individual and tailoring the work they would be doing to her specific needs and interests. This really helped them establish a great relationship. Cheryl has been working with my daughter for weeks now. She gives excellent guidance and also respects my daughter's need to have input in terms of what they are working on. My daughter actually enjoys the lessons and is able to identify ways she needs help and wants to grow. We could not be more pleased with Cheryl's work and plan to have her work with my daughter for a long time to come!

Approved by my uber difficult daughter

My daughter is a collage kid with a lot of issues and difficulties. She has been through many tutors. Cheryl’s clam and patient way of teaching kept her on her desk and got her safely through the semester with grade “A.” Cheryl is by far my daughter’s favorite tutor ever, and mine. Easy to communicate and comes to each session 200% prepared.

Tailors Instruction to Student Needs

Reserving the fifth star for when we see the results, but Cheryl has done very well so far by listening to our concerns as parents and to our son to help structure ways for him to develop better study habits and become more organized. She followed up the second meeting with a detailed written report that will help us to gauge his progress. She is intelligent and clearly experienced with a variety of students.

It is a bit early to report our advantages but so far Cheryl way exceeded what she wrote about herself. She is knowledgeable and experienced tutor who is able to organize the lessons and attract students.
