Qualifications for “English”

I would like to help you understand English so that you can use it more comfortably whether you need to interpret a reading, write a memo or have a more fluent conversation. By preparing engaging and thoughtful lessons, I can help you to develop your ear for the language so that you become a better speaker, or writer, or a more appreciative listener. We will enjoy a collaboration that is based your developing skills and hard work, and together, we can take your English to a higher level. I will provide the tools, and you can just bring yourself, at whatever level of English you are currently comfortable.

Welcome, and thank you for visiting my profile! I have been teaching English to adult Speakers of Other Languages (TESOL) for the last 10 years and help students improve their skills so they can listen, read and communicate with greater accuracy, fluency, and ease. I also tutor native English speakers of all ages to help improve their reading, writing, and speaking. Along with a B.A. from Yale University, and a TESOL Certificate from Hunter College, I have a Master's in TESOL from Hunter College, two years of ESOL classroom teaching, and more than 25 years of experience doing training and writing for financial service companies in New York City.
I have extensive experience customizing lessons using current materials to address my students' needs and interests. My lessons can help develop conversational fluency and appropriateness, as well as critical thinking skills, and show students how to improve oral presentations, essay writing, written presentations, memos, correspondence, and personal statements. I also prepare students for Common Core Standard exams and the English Regent. My high success rate helping students achieve their goals is the result of patience and a focus on interactivity, which, I believe breeds student engagement. As I am mindful that the goal of language study is to foster independent learning, you will find me to be compassionate and attentive, quick to ascertain where you need help, but not judgmental.

My recent ESOL teaching experience includes:
-As part of Master's coursework, a semester at the Community Outreach Program in English (C.O.P.E.),
an adult ESOL program at Hunter College and two semesters at LaGuardia Community College (for an
adult ESOL program and for CUNY's Language Immersion Program (CLIP)).
-Baruch College's Summer ESOL program and teaching at "Make the Road New York," a nonprofit
serving communities of color.

ESL/ESOL,

ESL/ESOL

My work has included six years of tutoring students whose first languages are Spanish, Portuguese, French, Chinese, Korean, Japanese, Russian and Italian, among others. I enjoy being able to make my students feel comfortable whether they are just beginning their study or are advanced, and will create individualized lessons for them in areas they choose so that I can help them to build on their strengths and develop their fluency. Whether they need help with pronunciation, accent reduction, reading comprehension, grammar, or writing, I will put my educational background and contemporary materials, including existing technology, to work to nurture your language skill. I tailor my lessons to accommodate the needs of my students and look forward to bringing their interests in current events and culture into our lessons to keep them interesting and vital. I received a TESOL (Teaching of English to Students of Other Languages) Certificate at Hunter College and a Bachelor of Arts from Yale University and have more than 25 years of experience writing for and training the employees of financial service companies in New York City.
Grammar,

Grammar

We may learn our first languages without studying grammar, however, to use a second or additional language, (unless you’re lucky enough to have learned it at an early age) you’ll need to learn some grammar if you wish to understand others and be understood by them. While word level grammar covers parts of speech, verbs, and tenses, etc., sentence level grammar involves putting those words together to make phrases, clauses, and sentences, etc. Since grammar can be challenging, I have found it to be more easily digested when learned incrementally, through multiple examples and practice. I teach grammar in context using the best tools and materials I’ve found so far: tables and exercises from various sources with practical examples where the content itself is interesting and/or conversationally oriented. If you are willing to undertake assignments between our lessons, I can discuss your using one or more of these outstanding sources.
Proofreading

Proofreading

Proofreading is a very important element of good writing and needs to be performed by the student and, if the writing is very long and complex, perhaps by another pair of eyes, be they those of a tutor or an editor. It requires "stepping back" from the writing to check whether the grammar, spelling, punctuation, etc., is correct and that the overall structure of the writing can be justified. For the tutor, skillful proofreading can be a way to help the student craft a good piece of writing into a better one. Students of all levels need to know how to proofread their work if they are hoping to present their best efforts and, therefore, proofreading must be a skill that tutors have mastered and can teach to students.

Elementary Education

Elementary (K-6th),

Elementary (K-6th)

I have tutored students at the K-12 level in reading and writing for eight years. I began my tutoring career at the East Harlem Scholars Academy where, as an after-school volunteer teacher, I helped first-grade students with their English and math assignments. Subsequently, I opened my own tutoring company where I've worked with many students whose parents speak English as a second language to help them develop their critical thinking, reading, and writing skills. While I believe in making students aware of the important role that vocabulary and grammar play in both reading and writing, and of the need for rigorous practice, my overarching goal is to help my students expand their curiosity and increase their comfort whether they are reading, listening, or writing. Connecting with students as a warm mentor, and letting them know that I have curiosity and openness about learning, as well as respect for what they can do, helps solidify good working relationships. I'm aware that I could not be doing my work if I didn't have a solid educational background and understand what constitutes clear-headed thinking and concise communication. I credit my inborn passion for learning and teaching to my second career as a tutor and teacher.

Reading,

Reading

I like to have my young students read aloud to me so I can make sure they can pronounce and understand the vocabulary they see. I will ask questions about a text to get students to open up and share their thoughts and feelings about what they are reading and to make sure they are following the story line. For older students, I might call their attention to the genre and title of a piece of writing so that they can more fully respond to it. I will discuss with them a text's main ideas, how it is organized, the influence of the setting, its main characters and, if it is a piece of non-fiction, then I will ask them to relate what some of the important things they learned from the text might be. I believe it is important to ask students their opinions but that those opinions be backed it up with details.
Spelling,

Spelling

As an avid reader and word lover, I strive to convey to my students my passion for words spelled properly. It isn't enough to get the word down on paper if it is misspelled; words need to be distinct and recognizable. With young students, I will differentiate between words that are spelled as they sound and "sight" words, those that are not spelled as they sound. I find that students have a better logical grip on spelling if they keep these categories of words separate. For some students, it is helpful to remind them that a final "e" can preserve the long vowel sound. I like to make index cards for my students to make sure they know not just how to spell a word, but what it means as well.
Vocabulary

Vocabulary

Whether helping to build a vocabulary for a child or for an adult, I am enthusiastic about learning new words and am able to convey that enthusiasm to my students. My favorite games are word games and so I like to make sure that my vocabulary lessons are fun. I will be certain to emphasize pronunciation, spelling and to use any vocabulary in sentences so that definitions are clear and words are not just memorized but learned so that they can be applied.

Writing

Encouraging students to write using their natural voices is what I’ve found to be most helpful. Whatever the writing assignment, I remind students that a good way to begin drafting a piece of writing is to create an outline or schematic: this can be something as simple as listing several main ideas, each with supporting details, and perhaps a preliminary introduction. For getting started, a brainstorm activity can be very effective since for many, starting the writing can be a difficult part of the writing. If a student is at a more advanced level, I ask him/her to work on editing the writing first, before I give any feedback: I believe that taking a step back to revisit your writing is a valuable independent exercise. I strive to show you how you can become a better reviewer of your own work. I can review your writing for its overall structure and internal logic, grammar, punctuation, spelling and suggest how it can be made stronger. Together we can explore if the writing accomplishes what it promises. Are ideas introduced followed through meaningfully, is it logical, and are its conclusions well supported?

Great teacher!

Ms. Cheri taught my son over 3 months. She noticed well my son’s weak and strong points while tutoring. And she gave me feedback and some recommendations for improving my son’s English. She guided him very well as what I inquired. She is a very kind and patient teacher. My son improved a lot with her.

Cheri was tutoring my child for over 6 months this school year. She whelping my daughter with reading and writing/spelling and it was improving as time went. Cheri is a very patient, calm and friendly tutor; for a child (who didn't like the idea of sitting an hour doing something she disliked) to then actually look forward to lessons was something that Cheri could achieve with her warm personality. My daughter felt more and more confident with her reading getting better. We are thankful to Cheri for all the help and I definitely would recommend her.

Professional Tutor

Cheri taught me that for every single word in English there are not specific rules. I took her advice seriously and I need to pay more attention when I listen people talking in English for the correct stress and pronunciation of words. I really appreciated the candid and professional she was with me. I definitely will meet with her again to learn more about correct English pronunciation.
