Qualifications for “writing”

As a former publications editor and writing consultant at Harvard University, I have been a private writing tutor for nearly a decade, having worked with over 500 students at the high-school, college and graduate-school levels, including students from Harvard, Yale, Cornell, Columbia, NYU, and about 40 others, helping students to:

(1) Develop a coherent thesis

(2) Find an appropriate structure for their arguments

(3) Develop a "voice" that flows intuitively

(4) Proofread and revise their material into a finished product.

After more than 500 5-star ratings from students over more than 3,000 hours of tutoring, I was recently recognized as one of WyzAnt's "Top 2% Tutors", out of some 75,000 on the nationwide platform.

I'm available virtually every day, including nights and weekends and can meet in person or online, and I'm happy to review papers in session or read them separately and deliver thorough comments and suggestions.

As always, I offer a first free consultation, so feel free to message me right here on WyzAnt!

My name is Mike F. and I'm here because I love teaching!

I finished my degree at Columbia University with a better than 4.00 GPA (made possible because all of my grades were As, with the exception of four courses, where I made A+). Moreover, I've become one of WyzAnt's top 2% tutors, with over 3,000 hours of tutoring experience, earning over 500 5-star ratings. I work with everyone from high school students to hedge fund managers, teaching accounting, finance, economics, statistics, Excel, writing, admissions coaching, career coaching, and a host of other subjects to over 300 individual and institutional clients. They include:

-College, MBA, and graduate students from Harvard, Yale, Columbia, Cornell, Dartmouth, NYU, Oxford, Boston College, and over 40 others across the U.S., Europe, and China

-Finance professionals in investment banking, private equity, asset management, portfolio management, and real estate, from companies like Goldman Sachs, Credit Suisse, Bank of America, and JP Morgan

-C-level executives, attorneys, physicians, entrepreneurs, and management consultants

In the process I've earned over 500 5-star ratings in over 3,000 hours of tutoring. I work with clients in person, as well as online via Zoom, Google Meet, and Skype. I also use a digital whiteboard to make drawings, notes, and diagrams that show up right on your screen, in real time while we video chat.

100% MONEY BACK GUARANTEE: Teaching is my passion and I dedicate myself to my clients. As such, I never want you to feel like you're paying for more value than you're getting. So if you are ever not satisfied with a lesson that you've had, simply message me within 24 hours and I will refund every dime.

If you have any questions whatsoever, or you would like to set something up, feel free to message me.

And I look forward to helping you learn!

-Mike

Business

Most recently, I worked at Harvard Business School under an MBA-program professor for whom I did research, writing, editing, Excel, generated PowerPoints and helped her teach her ideas. I also tutored students in economics, finance, accounting, statistics, marketing, operations management and business strategy. I have a degree in Economics from American University, including a minor in Finance from the Kogod School of Business. I have also worked in corporate finance and management consulting for two years IBM. I have also managed several private ventures, including free-lance market research and writing for the credit card industry, an economics blog, and coaching published business writers. Most of all, I love teaching and delivering ideas in ways that actually MAKE SENSE, as opposed to just throwing techno babble in your face. If you're a common-sense type person, we should be a good match!

Career Development

Over the past five years I’ve made it my job (literally) to test career strategies. I’ve worked for a consulting firm, a bank, and the business schools at Harvard and MIT, before becoming a private MBA tutor, consultant, and career coach. In my experiences interviewing with Wall Street money managers, the biggest hedge fund in the world, Harvard Business School, the Sloan School of Management, Dow Jones, a handful of major consulting firms, and IBM, I’ve learned about what it takes optimize your probability of getting hired, but more on that later. I have coached clients through career transitions in IT, management consulting, political management/public policy, and sports management. I’ve worked with COOs, writers, MBAs, JDs, MDs, professors at Harvard and MIT, and newly-minted liberal arts students prepping for interviews with investment banks.
Finance,

Finance

You need help in finance. There’s a reason Harvard Business School hired me in 2013 to help re-design their curriculum to be more approachable to students from non-finance backgrounds. When you’re looking for a finance teacher or tutor, you should look for two things: (1) someone who *knows* finance (2) someone who knows how to *teach* finance. Unfortunately, most business professors are hired because they’re experts in their subject matter (finance, accounting, etc.), but not necessarily expert *teachers*. (I know because I’ve worked at three business schools—Harvard, MIT, and American University.) Well, I’m an expert *finance teacher*. Here’s why: Over the past six years—teaching finance to students from Harvard, Yale, Columbia, NYU/Stern, and about 40 others—I’ve developed a method that differs from what you normally get from professors and textbooks, both of which use an overly-technical approach that ignores what you *don’t* know. Let me also be clear about something: IF YOU DON'T LEARN FROM ME, I DON'T CHARGE YOU. That is, if you are not 100% satisfied with your lesson, tell me within 24 hours and I will refund the entire lesson charge. Moreover, I teach and tutor everything you’ll cover in a introductory- or intermediate corporate finance course, including: ACCOUNTING CONCEPTS/FINANCIAL STATEMENT ANALYSIS FINANCIAL RATIOS (Profitability, Liquidity, Debt, Activity) CASH FLOW ANALYSIS THE TIME VALUE OF MONEY (PV, FV, NPV, IRR, N, I/YR) BONDS (YTM, interest rates, coupons) STOCK PRICING CAPITAL BUDGETING PORTFOLIO THEORY CASH FLOW PROJECTIONS VALUATION (DCF) FINANCIAL MODELING/EXCEL Having received over 500 5-star ratings from my WyzAnt clients (98% satisfaction rate), I encourage you to read the reviews my clients have left, so you can get a sense of how they feel about working with me (reviews can be found on my profile). (Outside of my work with WyzAnt, I’ve trained investment bankers, hedge fund analysts, real estate professionals, private investors, and c-level executives, prior to which I wo

Right now I'm offering a FREE TRIAL SESSION to new students—no obligation to continue after the free session--just a chance for you to try me out with no risk :) As a former teaching assistant at Harvard Business School, and a former accountant at IBM and the Royal Bank of Scotland, I can tell you that there is a *big* difference between knowing financial accounting, and knowing how to *teach* it. Here’s a secret that your university isn’t telling you: most accounting professors are not hired because they’re expert teachers, they’re hired because they’re expert accountants. They tend to teach using industry jargon that makes sense to *them*, but not to the average beginner. What you need is someone who can break accounting down into plain English and teach you step-by-step, starting with easier and more familiar concepts, and building on top of those. I’ve used this method successfully over the past eight years with some 500 students—both MBA and undergraduate—at schools ranging from small community colleges to top-tier business schools like Harvard, Yale, Columbia, Cornell, NYU, Oxford, and about 40 others. I’ve also worked privately with managers, c-level executives, attorneys, doctors, entrepreneurs, investors, and other professionals in finance, real estate, tech, healthcare, and more. My goal is to de-mystify this material into something that you can understand, and to do so better than your professor or textbook. Let me also make something very clear: IF YOU DON'T LEARN FROM ME. Statistics

If you’re looking for a statistics tutor, you should be looking for two things: i) Someone who knows statistics well ii) Someone who knows HOW TO TEACH statistics well Here’s a secret your school probably isn’t telling you (but you may have noticed): statistics professors are hired because they’re good statisticians, not necessarily excellent teachers. Your professor and I are both great at statistics, but our goals are different. Your professor’s goal is to get through the curriculum. My goal is to get you to UNDERSTAND the curriculum. Over the last seven or so years, I'VE DEVELOPED A DIFFERENT METHOD TO TEACHING STATISTICS. My style is different from your professor’s or your textbook’s because it’s built on the psychology of how human beings learn. (Besides statistics, psychology is my other area of expertise.) Your professor is an expert at DOING statistics (which really means researching). I think of myself as an expert at TEACHING statistics. Let me make one thing very clear: IF YOU DON’T LEARN FROM ME, I DON’T CHARGE YOU. And so you have an idea of my background/experience with stats: I’ve worked as an research assistant on some eight different statistical studies at Harvard Business School, MIT and American University in Washington, DC. I have a degree in Economics & Finance from American University and have had coursework at the London School of Economics. I have worked on statistics for: -IBM -MIT Sloan School of Management -Harvard Business School -Citizens Bank/Royal Bank of Scotland -The US Navy -The Harvard Program on US-Japan Relations For seven years, I’ve tutored business stats to students at (and this is just some of them): -Harvard Law School -Harvard Kennedy School of Government -MIT -Boston College – Carroll School of Management -Boston University – School of Management -George Washington University

Right now I'm offering a FREE TRIAL SESSION to new students—no obligation to continue after the free session—just a chance for you to try me out with no risk :) As a former economics teaching assistant at Harvard, I can tell you that there is a *big* difference between knowing macroeconomics, and knowing how to *teach* macroeconomics. Here’s a secret that your university isn’t telling you: most economics professors aren’t hired because they’re expert teachers, they’re hired because they’re expert economists, researchers, and statisticians. They tend to teach using mathematical jargon that makes sense to *them*, but not to the average beginner. What you need is someone who can break macroeconomics down into plain English and teach you step-by-step, starting with easier and more familiar concepts, and building on top of those. I’ve used this method successfully over the past eight years, with some 500 students at schools ranging from small community colleges to Harvard, Yale, Columbia, Cornell, NYU, Oxford, and about 40 others. My goal is to de-mystify this material into something that you can understand, and to do so better than your professor or textbook ever could. Let me also make something very clear: IF YOU DON'T LEARN FROM ME. I DON'T CHARGE YOU. That is, if you are not satisfied with any session that we’ve had, just message me within 24 hours and I will happily refund the charges. In terms of macroeconomics, I teach and tutor: • National Income, Real and Nominal GDP • Inflation and Price Level • Consumption (C), Investment (I), Government Spending (G), and Net Exports (NX) • Inflation and the CPI • Unemployment • Supply and Demand • The Cobb-Douglas Production Function (Y = AKL) • The Solow Growth Model • Monetary & Fiscal Policy • The Money Supply • The Multiplier • Interest Rates • Loanable Funds Markets • Taxation, National Savings, and Private Savings • Long-Run Aggregate Supply (LRAS) • The IS/LM Model • Keynesian Cross • …and much more In terms of meeting logistics, I meet

Hi all. My name is Mike and I'm here because I love helping young people reach their dream schools. Having worked and/or studied at Harvard, Columbia, and MIT, I know how top institutions think, what they value, and what they're looking for in their students and I want to teach you those secrets. In crafting a college application, it’s important to realize that admissions officers are looking for seven things: (1) academic and problem-solving skills, (2) proactivity, (3) persistence, (4) a desire for growth, (5) teamwork and leadership, and (6) social contribution. When I work with students, I show them how to integrate each of these components into an essay. Now, a great college essay, in turn, does seven things: First, it demonstrates the characteristics I just mentioned by "showing rather than telling". Second, it does this by telling a unique story that’s memorable and differentiates you from other applicants. Third, it highlights your best achievements—these can be academic, athletic, and/or artistic. Fourth, it expresses your authentic interests, and ideally hints at a possible academic or career direction. Fifth, it’s written specifically for the school that it’s targeting: You’ll want a tailored essay for *each* school that you apply to—one that shows how that school's programs, majors, and courses are a perfect match for your ambitions. Sixth, it skillfully addresses any gaps or concerns an admissions officer might have when reviewing your application. Finally, it tells a narrative that's consistent with all the other information they'll be looking at in your application (transcripts, test scores, etc.). This way, everything "tells the same story". If that seems like a lot, it’s because it is. But successful students do it, and I’d like to show you how. (For more hints, see the bottom of this letter.) Now, a bit about my background: I’m a graduate student at Columbia University’s School of Education (Teachers College) and a former writing tutor at Harvard University. I’ve also been an admissions coa
Finance,

Knowledgeable and Patient Tutor

I’m getting my MBA at Columbia and Michael was extremely helpful at explaining corporate finance. He was super helpful at explaining the fcf model. Worth every dollar and highly recommend!

Excellent

While Michael is pretty expensive, he really is worth it. For this subject I searched through many tutors and no one else was able to tutor at this level of difficulty. Intermediate macroeconomics at my university is as close to torture as the Geneva convention allows and he does a great job at making it as painless as possible. He is very patient and never lets on when you’re being slow or asking a dumb question. Also extremely thorough and really breaks things down into examples you can follow. He very much increased my confidence in being able to actually understand and solve these problems. Highly recommended!

Incredibly smart and has an amazing way of breaking down complex problems

Over the course of several sessions Michael taught us about stock analysis, and went through each line item we were required to know for class and explained it, showed us where to find it, and why it was important.

Next level

Mike was really fantastic, knowledgeable, and patient. We had a group presentation due for an MBA Economics project and he helped provide useful feedback to streamline the project and make sure we weren’t leaving anything out. He was generous with his energy and time and helped us get to the next level with our material. Would highly recommend him! Thanks Mike!

Easy to follow and understand a complex course of study.

He will ensure you grasp the concepts. You will not be disappointed in working with him. I have utilized him for statistics/ accounting courses and I have complaints whatsoever!

Another example of “you get what you pay for”

Michael was great. I was in a panic over getting university level intermediate economics homework done in time. There was math that was previously incomprehensible to me and by the end it seemed obvious. Contacted several other tutors and they all said that they weren’t comfortable teaching at this level so he was a really lucky find.
