Phonics,

Phonics

My experience teaching phonics is to assess where the student is and begin by reinforcing what the student knows and encourage new learning. In my classroom, I incorporate a 30-minute daily phonics lesson into language arts classroom instruction. I focus on carefully sequenced skills that include print knowledge, alphabet awareness, phonological awareness, phonemic awareness, decoding, vocabulary, fluency, and spelling. Critical thinking, speaking and listening skills are practiced during Storytime activities. Furthermore, my co-teacher and I target small group intervention for students in the lowest 30th percentile. When I worked with older students (3-6 Gr), based on the research on invented and developmental spelling, I use Words Their Way. This book provides a practical way for teachers to study words with students. The framework is keyed to the five stages of spelling or orthographic development so that it complements the use of any existing phonics, spelling, and vocabulary curricula. Often presented in a game-like format, these activities are actually mini-lessons that draw upon what students concurrently are learning in developmental reading and writing. the lessons in sequential order are: The Assessment of Orthographic Development; Word Study for Emergent Learners in the Preliterate Stage; Word Study for Beginners in the Letter Name Stage; Word Study for Transitional Learners in the Within Word Pattern Stage; and Word Study for Intermediate and Specialized Readers and Writers in the Syllable Juncture and Derivational Constancy Stages. I also provide parents with a list of literature for word study.

Social Studies

Social Studies

I am a certified teacher and for 12 years I taught all subjects in elementary school including social studies. The last four years of elementary classroom teaching, the curriculum was a social studies and literacy integration. This mean that students not only had to develop projects for social studies but ELA had to be aligned to match the curriculum. For example, one of our projects consisted on learning about goods and needs. Our students opened a restaurant , created flyers, applied for the job(s), and wrote menus.

Great tutor

Carol has started with the basics with my son. Foundation is important when it comes to reading new words. She is understanding that he does not like to sit still and does not like reading and writing, but still manages to get his attention and productivity. My son is super sensitive and she knows how to talk to him without hurting his feelings while still getting results. Her years of experience show in her work and interaction with my son.

Tutor responded:

Thank you so much for your kind review. It is a privilege to have the opportunity to work with your son.

Knowledgeable and patient

Carol is an excellent teacher and very patient. She taught my grandson how to multiply two digit numbers in an easy way. He was so excited when he solved the problem correctly. We are looking forward to his next session with Carol.

Carol is GREAT!!! Super tutor!!

Our daughter REALLY likes working with Carol. She’s very patient when going over concepts, and focuses on the *why* as much as the *how*. Also, my wife and I really appreciate Carol’s detailed summaries after each lesson—they helped determine what we should focus on in between each weekly lesson. And Carol was always willing to provide extra homework outside of each lesson whenever we felt it was appropriate. Finally, Carol took time to schedule an introductory Zoom meeting with our daughter and both of us parents where we got to know each other ahead of the first lesson. This helped kick things off on the right foot. In short, we can’t recommend Carol enough. She’s helped our daughter’s test taking strategies, and we know the lessons she’s learned will help her throughout school and beyond.

Carol is great!

Carol has had 3 sessions so far with my 9 year old dyslexic son. She keeps his attention well and is very encouraging and patient. I have found hope again that my son will progress from his 1st grade reading level. He is going into 4th grade this next school year and progress has been very slow. The schools do not have the tools he needs. I am glad I quit being overwhelmed with options and got him started. I highly recommend Carol.

Great experience

Great first experience. Carol is very patient, has a great approach and is encouraging. It was my first time with a tutor for my 8 year old child. My son was very receptive. He liked the experience. Carol is very patient and demonstrates a great deal of experience with elementary education. In particular, she helped my 8 year old get up to speed in his comprehension and ready for fourth grade. With Carol, he is on the right track!

Awesome Teacher!

How do you say, "Thank You" to a tutor who has literally changed your child's life? How do you express in words the joy, excitement, calmness and confidence that you feel when you see your child blossom academically. These are just a few things Carol has done for my family. To see and know and understand where my child has come from academically since we started with Carol 3 months ago is nothing short of a MIRACLE!! We have been blessed and continued to be blessed with a tutor who not only knows her craft, but cares enough to make the effort in every way to help her student to succeed. THANK YOU, CAROL.
