Hello,

My name is Olympia, I am an experienced Social Worker and Educator. I tutor online, in libraries, and other public quiet spaces in Lower Westchester, NY, the Bronx, and Manhattan. I have experience working with children as young as 1.5 years old for early intervention/special needs instruction. I also work with older children, college students and adults.

Some strategies I use to strengthen reading, writing, attention, focus, and thinking skills are: visual tracking, visual aids, read aloud, prompting, cues, redirection, phonological training, repetition, positive and negative reinforcement, observational and interactive learning, social-emotional learning, and more.

Please note my tutoring philosophy: Tutoring is additional instruction and support, NOT homework help or homework supervision. Parent/caregiver coaching is provided with every session.

I take pride in the work that I do and will give you great professional service. I offer group tutoring as well.

I hold a Science of Reading Fundamentals Microcredential, a Bachelor of Arts in Social Sciences Interdisciplinary (concentration in Community Mental Health), a Master of Social Work (concentration in Higher Education), and a Master of Arts in International Education. I have doctoral credits in education and natural health. I also hold Christian minister certificates and offer character development sessions as well.

I look forward to working with you!

Approved Subjects

American History

American History

In high school I took a number of AP Courses. As part of my MA degree, I studied many aspects of American History including law, social conditions, and the educational system, as well as, various topics in international relations.
Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD)

Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD)

I have personal experience working with a child on the the autism spectrum. Some challenges include focusing attention, working around somatic difficulties related to touch and sound, as well as, strengthening speech and monitor skills. I have a Masters of Social Work degree and a Masters of Arts in International Education. I understand that patience, creativity, and out-of-the-box thinking is required in order to facilitate learning with an autistic child.
Bible Studies

Bible Studies

I am currently pursuing my Ph.D. in Christian Education. I currently teach Sunday School for adults at my church, and I have two bible study certificates in "Evangelism" and "Christian Doctrine".
College Counseling

College Counseling

I have a MSW with a concentration in Higher Education, and a MA in International Education. Through my academic career I have been trained to respond to the unique challenges college applicants and college students face. I have attended three of the nation's top schools and I know what it takes to write a clear, concise, and compelling personal statement. I have experience helping students develop time management guides and helping students improve their study skills. I currently work with juveniles who have academic difficulty; I help them find supportive counseling and alternative schooling.
Common Core

Common Core

Beginning in January 2014, until April 2015, I was able to work in a public middle school as a tutor and teacher assistant. I worked with 7th graders who were learning via the new Common Core curriculum. I tutored students individually and collectively in humanities, science, and math. As part of my Masters of Arts in International Education, I took a course entitled the "Politics of Education" in which I learned about the features and intent of the Common Core curriculum. Common Core is generally designed to be one to two grade levels ahead of the current grade level. For example, if your child is in the 4th grade, they will eventually have work that was once considered 5th/6th grade level. The Common Core curriculum is very advanced and it can be difficult, not only for students, but for parents as well.
Elementary (K-6th)

Elementary (K-6th)

I currently assist in a family daycare where we care for and academically assist children ranging from 6 weeks old to 12 years old. I currently work with two second graders who are now working with the Common Core curriculum in the public schools. I offer regular homework help; I monitor their reading and vocabulary skills, assist with their math homework, and help them to develop their writing skills.
English

English

Successfully passed AP English course in high school. Currently possess two masters degree, and working on a doctorate.
ESL/ESOL

European History

European History

In high school I took a number of AP Courses, including European History for which I received a 4/5 on the exam. I have a Bachelors degree in Social Sciences, a Masters of Social Work with a concentration in Higher Education, and a Masters in International Education. As part of my study for my MA degree I studied many aspects of history, political agreements and international relations.
Homeschool

Homeschool

I have been tutoring students and assisting at my family's daycare for over a year. Tutoring and working in the daycare are similar to homeschooling because there is still an expectation of meaningful learning. While a curriculum is used to give structure to the learning process students are encouraged to have their curiosity guide them. I have experience working with children as young as 2 years old, teaching them basic alphabets and numbers, and I have experience with older children upwards to teenagers, helping them in the areas of English, reading comprehension, and science.
Reading

Reading

According to UNESCO, the ability to read and write is very important for communication, self-improvement and the elimination of poverty. However, more than 2/3rds of the world’s population of women is illiterate, and young women comprise more than 60% of the world’s illiterate youth; many literate adults still lack basic reading, writing and comprehension skills. As a tutor, I encourage students to read and to be actively involved in their own education. I teach them to look up unfamiliar words in the dictionary and to utilize prefix, suffix, and root word lists. I teach them to look for context, voice, and style as they read in order to enhance their comprehension.
Special Needs

Special Needs

I have 5 years of experience working with developmentally disabled and mental health populations. I currently work as a clinical advisor with juveniles and their families. I refer them to mental health and concrete services, offer them psycho-social education, intervene during crises, and assess for safety. In 2010, I worked as a direct-care aid in a home for developmentally disabled adult women. My duties included medication management, first-aid, assistance with daily living skills, and crisis intervention. Beginning in 2011 until 2014, I worked as a mental health worker on a psychiatric ward for a major hospital. I worked with youth as young as 12 years old, adults, and senior citizens who presented with various mental conditions. From fall 2011 to spring 2012, I interned in a substance abuse agency where I ran support groups and made referrals. From the fall of 2012 until spring 2013, I worked in the counseling center of a college where I assisted students who were having academic difficulties due to personal stress. I helped students to create weekly and monthly planners, I taught on stress relief and time management, and referred students to other services. I believe I am well qualified in this area.
Spelling

Spelling

I offer personal and small group tutoring to strengthen literacy skills and improve self-esteem.
Study Skills

Study Skills

I have a Bachelor of Arts in Social Sciences Interdisciplinary with a concentration in Community Mental Health. I have a MSW with a concentration in Higher Education, and a MA in International Education where I studied the sociology and politics of education and education development. I have interned for one year (2012-2013) on a college campus where I helped students who were struggling academically due to personal issues and/or poor study skills.
Vocabulary

Vocabulary

The English language is filled with a plethora of words, yet many people only use but a few. As a tutor I utilize words lists, phrase lists, book lists, as well as, suffix, prefix, and roots lists. The key to improving one's vocabulary is to constantly read and to research unfamiliar words. Prefix, suffix, and root knowledge enables one to infer the basic meaning of a word when dictionaries and search engines are unavailable.
World History

World History

We live in a global society which requires us to have knowledge and respect of other cultures, faiths, and customs. Many of these cultures, faiths, and customs go back centuries to the dawn of civilization. As part of my educational training for both my Masters of Social Work and Masters of Arts in International Education degrees, I have studied various peoples, social ideologies, and political systems. As a tutor, I will ensure that my students have a solid understanding of ancient history from the fertile crescent civilizations, to the Silk Road commerce, to the invention of the printing press, until modern day times. I believe that current events can be informed from history, and that it is important to make connections between the two. World History is our history; we must be able to intelligently research and analyze that history through use of various literary texts, whether political, historical, or religious in nature.
Writing

Great Tutor!

I've had some Tutor lessons with Olympia and it always went well. She helped me to prepare for the TOEFL test. Most of the time we went through academic articles, which she brought to every lesson. She helped me understand difficult words and I could always ask questions that she would answer. I had a great time during the lessons and felt a little more prepared for the test. Thanks Olympia!
