I'm passionate about helping my students to turn what frustrates them into what they love. My specialty is in finding what blocks your ability to learn, and help you open the bottleneck.

My experience is that once the block is opened, learning comes naturally.

I am successful using this teaching method in various subjects. First are the basics - any gaps in reading or numbers are going to affect all other learning.

Also, similarly, I found that I can teach the basic concepts of using a computer or smart phone to people who didn't grow up around computers, and feel confused or uncomfortable using them.

I work with both kids and adults who want to improve their reading and understanding, and adults who never learned to read before. (Both in English and Hebrew.)

Do you need help with a special project? I helped ESL and special needs students pass the driver's test, the citizenship exam, learn to read medication labels, etc.

I'm a software engineer by day, but I have been tutoring since I was 12, and my first love was helping kids see the beauty in numbers. I still love doing that.

I am curious to hear from you, and find out what you need.

Note: I tutor primarily around Hackensack, NJ, Nyack, NY and anywhere in between.

General Computer,

General Computer

Are you frustrated with your computer or smart phone skills? If computers, smart phones or tablets feel like a foreign land to you, I can help. Once I teach you the language, you will easily be able to accomplish what is important to you. It is never too late to learn.

ESL/ESOL,

ESL/ESOL

When tutoring ESL, my focus is on what you need now. What is the skill that will make your life easier, and fast. Do you need help pronouncing? Understanding someone talking? Reading? Writing notes? Do you need vocabulary that is specific for your job, or for talking with you doctor. Learning a new language is complicated. You need to learn the spoken language, and the written one. But ESL is more than learning a new language. It means learning a new culture. And it means that until you learn all this, you struggle to function at the level you are used to as an adult, or even as a kid. Simple things we take for granted are difficult tasks. Chatting with a neighbor. Shopping for food. Talking with the kid's teacher. Taking the driver's test. I will work with you to improve what you want to, or help you find out what is holding you back.

Elementary Education

Elementary Math,

Elementary Math

Elementary math is what we all use daily. When do I need to leave the house to get somewhere on time? Do I have enough in my pocket for a donut with my coffee? If you or your kid shies away from numbers, I can help. Math, like anything else, is easier to approach if you don't hate it. Give me the chance to re-introduce you to your enemy. You may be pleasantly surprised!
Reading,

Reading

We use reading every day. Those of us who do it well are not aware of it. But for those who are struggling, it is a continuous pain. Improving the ability to read and understand books, recipes, instructions, medication labels, food labels, street and store signs, ideas, poetry, history. All these change a person's life, and sometimes a whole family. If you are reading this - you are fortunate that you can. Since this skill affects our life so widely, it is important to get better at it the earliest you can. If you or someone you know need help, let me know.
Study Skills,

Study Skills

Having study skills means knowing HOW to study, as opposed to the information which is WHAT you study. That means having a system that works for you, with which you approach studying anything. Knowing how you study best, what works for you, and how do do it makes approaching new material less intimidating and more fun. As your tutor I have the advantage of sitting with you one-to-one, and together we can find out what works best for you. You can create a system that will benefit you from now on. You can learn how to take notes in class or during self study, how to study for a test, how to take a test, and more.

Algebra 1,

Algebra 1

Algebra is (surprisingly to some) one of the more useful day to day life skill. It teaches us to think of situations and be able to see a picture even when some details are missing. We learn to look for relationships, rather than rely on facts alone. I love introducing kids to Algebra.

Great tutor

Our 4th grader has been struggling in both math and reading. Avital S. has now come to our home twice and both times has done a great job helping our son feel comfortable and excited to learn. She has come prepared with lessons that are educational, as well as fun. While staying focused can be difficult for our son, Avital has done a nice job of keeping him moving and engaged. I also appreciate that she is thoughtful in her approach and in the material she is covering. Prior to hiring Avital, she spent time discussing our son's needs and wanted notes from his teacher regarding his performance and where he was struggling to better prepare material for his tutoring sessions. She is very professional, calm and caring while delivering results. We are really excited we found Avital S. She is an A+ tutor!

Excellent Commitment

Avital is very committed to one to one teaching, though she did become just a wee bit impatient during the session at one point. But her approach to teaching is the right way, I believe, because she spends a lot of time providing grounding information, which isn't always so easy. She is generally good-natured and keeps her sense of humor throughout.

Motivating and patient

Avital is my daughter's ninth grade math tutor. She is an excellent teacher and very patient. She is responsible and provides tremendous clarity to each math lesson. I highly recommend her. My daughter's grade was raised from a D to a B in a 3 month period.

SARI, 105 lessons with Avital

Magically Engaging Tutor

Avital was able to capture the imagination of my 11 year old son in a way that has been transformative in his reading and knowledge of computers. Avital devised a plan and my son has never been more productive and engaged in his work. I highly recommend Avital as a tutor.
