Qualifications for “art history”

I have developed and taught college courses in Western Art History, Art Appreciation, and Art Theory, specializing in Renaissance through the rise of Modernism as well as Contemporary Art. I offer guidance with analyzing and interpreting art from historic to contemporary examples, as well as assistance with editing papers. My methods focus on helping students to develop an understanding of the big picture of social and cultural movements, revealing the ways that thoughts, attitudes, and beliefs have shifted over time, and showing how art and artifacts contain these stories. By developing an understanding of the trajectory of art history, as well as a vocabulary to effectively express ideas, students are prepared to think through the essay questions on exams that go beyond memorization.

Rekindling a studio practice or applying to art school or residencies can be overwhelming, and it helps to have support. I offer guidance to accompany your growth.

Absolute beginners are welcome here. Maybe you connected to art in childhood and are ready to explore it again. Customized lessons cover the fundamentals of drawing from observation, intro to color mixing and more.

Sessions may be a meditative experience of art making, a dialogue about creative challenges and possibilities, or an organic combination of both. My role is to see the big picture of where you're headed while always staying flexible; I believe this responsiveness is at the heart of maintaining creativity through the ebb and flow of life.

We can also craft an art statement that gets to the heart of your vision. I have an ability to see beyond what is said, and am with you from initial brainstorming and dialogue through the meticulous details of final editing. The resulting statements are useful for your own website, as well as applications for academic programs, grants, residencies and exhibitions.

I have 18 years of experience and have supported numerous students in gaining admission to top art high schools, colleges and graduate programs (LaGuardia, SAIC, SVA, SCAD and others). I also teach college level Art History and can support you in structuring and revising Art History papers.

Message me to get started, or with any questions you might have. Please note: Lessons are conducted online.

My own artwork has been shown internationally and across the United States at the Pensacola Museum of Art, the Contemporary Museum of Baltimore, and FLAG Foundation in New York. I was awarded a Chenven Foundation Grant, a Smack Mellon Studio Fellowship, and Artist Residency Grants the La Napoule Art Foundation in La Napoule, France, and Tilleard Projects on Lamu Island, Kenya. My solo exhibition at the Institute of Contemporary Art was named one of the Top Ten Art Shows of the Year.

Art Theory,

Art Theory

Art Theory addresses the way that humans have made sense of the world throughout time. From expressions of beauty, celebration, and reverence, to tragedy and despair, there is nothing beyond the scope of artistic production. As an active studio artist with 5 years of experience as an Art History Professor, I help with researching, writing, and studying for exams in Art History, Art Appreciation, and Art Theory. I am excellent at helping to synthesize ideas, with a particular strength for improving syntax and clarity.
Drawing,

Drawing

I have my Masters of Fine Art including a background in traditional drawing, and my students learn drawing skills based on observation by drawing from still lifes, architecture, landscape, and the figure, using charcoal, ink, graphite, and collage, as well as possible experiments in nontraditional materials. Drawing is a critical skill for artists, but also recommended for writers and anyone interested in deepening their engagement with the world around them. As your observational drawing skills increase, you will learn to interpret the dimensional world and accurately render from life. Students from all skill levels, including no experience, are welcome.

Art teacher who sees ME

Skye was amazing. She was able to look at my artwork and immediately have a sense of my strengths, my challenges and suggestions on what to work on. It’s only the next day and I already see improvement in my artwork and at least now I know what I need to work on and what I need to research. I was lost in how to improve and she just was able to see it within the first 30 seconds. Besides being such a lovely person she really knows her stuff big-time. So grateful I found her

Extremely helpful and compassionate

My twelve-year-old daughter who loves drawing has been greatly helped by Skye G as my daughter learns to draw portraits. Not only has has Skye provided coaching in shading of solids and proportions of faces in portraits, but Skye has incorporated art history, building on previous lessons and learning to use symbols in backgrounds. My daughter loves what she's learning with Skye.

5 star review for Skye G

Skye is a remarkable teacher and I can’t recommend her highly enough! I began lessons with Skye when I was feeling very lost about my career and my artistic pursuits. Skye prepared incredible lessons that directed and supported my technical development but also infused me with confidence and courage in my artistic expression. This renewed conviction that she helped to cultivate, propelled me to take risks creatively and pursue dreams that I never thought I could. She became a mentor for me, as she offered wisdom and guidance every step of the way as I explored and worked on my new creative ventures and was met with various challenges. Her vast knowledge and extensive experience was so beneficial in my process as she provided key recommendations and approaches in finding solutions. Her lessons were a wonderful mix of art history, art theory and composition, enticing projects and incredible mentorship. It was a true blessing to have had Skye as my teacher. Thank you for your help! Lucia
