I'm Shawn! I graduated on the Dean's List from Columbia University with a Bachelor's Degree in History and Concentration in Chemistry. Since high school I've been tutoring students in middle school and in college I continued tutoring high school students to help them reach their dream schools! At Columbia, I realized early that no matter how interesting a class sounded, the personality and attentiveness of the teacher are what made the class worth taking. I try to follow this rule when tutoring, making the subject as interesting and captivating as possible so that my students can learn the best.
Some previous students I tutored were Sophomores and Juniors in high school, where tests can be more important for college admissions such as APs, SATs, and Regents. The subjects I focused on the most were Math (Geometry, Algebra/Trigonometry, Pre-Calculus) since I received 100s on those Regents, 5 on the Calculus AP, and a 800 on the Math section of the SAT. Since I majored in History, I also have helped some students with AP Euro, AP US History, and AP Economics preparation.
Most of my tutoring time has been 1 on 1 with students since I believe this is the most effective way to assess a student's strengths and weaknesses in a subject so that I can modify the lesson to target the weaknesses while also keeping the students engaged. As of 2025, I have 5 years of total tutoring experience, since I took some years off while working as a video editor at a reality TV company creating shows like Love Island and Alone.
Ever since my first student back in high school, the feeling of accomplishment seeing a student score well in a subject that they thought they were bad at and would never get better at (which is never the case) made me realize how much tutoring can change a student's willingness to learn and appreciation for these subjects. I take the time to get to know my students to best help them succeed, so feel free to contact me with any questions!
