Qualifications for “study skills”

As a special education teacher who holds a Masters in both General and Special Education, teaching study skills was an absolute must. I dedicated at least two periods per week in my classroom, to teach my students appropriate and productive study skills. These skills included, but were not limited to, making and using their own flash cards, visual reminders on the walls around their bedroom/house and creating an environment that is conducive to effective studying.

I am an educator known for my love of children. The joy I feel in watching them master a topic they struggled with, is why I am grateful to be an educator. Every child has the ability to soar, some just need help in opening their wings. I have always believed, there are things in life that I'm not certain of, but two things I know for sure. I am an educator known for my love of children. The joy I feel in watching them master a topic they struggled with, is why I am grateful to be an educator. Every child has the ability to soar, some just need help in opening their wings. I have always believed, there are things in life that I'm not certain of, but two things I know for sure. I was meant to have the son that I was blessed with, and I was born to educate children.

I would like to share a little bit about my past. I was a special education teacher with the New York City Department of Education for over fifteen years. I planned on continuing my career until retirement, but my life took an unexpected turn. I was forced to take an indefinite leave of absence due to a car accident. I was physically unable to return to the classroom, but desperately wanted to continue teaching. My leave eventually brought me to Wyzant, and every day I am grateful for this journey.

There was a void in my life that I am now able to fill. I am currently self-employed as an Independent SETS Provider for the NYCDOE, as well as a private tutor. In the classroom, so much time is spent on mandatory paperwork and test prep, that sometimes the actual teaching suffers. In a one to one setting, this isn't the case. The ratio of one student to one teacher, leads to amazing results.

As a classroom teacher with the NYCDOE, I taught ELA including literature and grammar. I also taught Math, Science and Social Studies to my elementary and middle school students. Many were working 1-3 years below grade level. With my strategies, they began to love learning and their reading and subject levels increased 2-3 grades in one academic school year. During my time in the classroom, I was known to raise standardized test scores each year and was often asked to assist colleagues in mastering effective teaching strategies. I currently hold a Master's Degree in General and Special Education, and I still possess a current license as a New York City Department of Education teacher.

Hello, I am qualified to tutor in this area because as a special education teacher, I am certified to teach all four major content areas (ELA, science, social studies and mathematics). In order to become certified in my current certification, I passed the NYS teacher's exam, which for special needs, incorporated all four major content areas. My students, although middle school level, worked on a second to sixth grade level. Daily I was responsible to teach all levels in my classroom with the average levels from second to fourth grade. I increased reading, writing and comprehension in all content areas by a minimum of two grade levels each academic school year.
Handwriting,

Handwriting

As a previous Special Education classroom teacher, I witnessed many of my students struggle with clear and legible handwriting. I decided to implement handwriting strategies which I feel have been lost along the way in the public school system. Teaching students where on the line to begin a letter, using fun and effective reminders such as "touch and "bump" (touching the line to begin a letter and bumping it to stop), air writing a letter to get the student used to the flow and direction of a particular letter being taught. These are just a few of the effective strategies I have used to greatly improve a child's handwriting.

Phonics

As a long time Special Education educator in the NYC public school system, I have taught phonics to beginning elementary students as well as struggling middle school students. I have used games, riddles, videos, very specific reading passages which were concentrated on specific sounds, and of course, good old fashion practice to help students master their phonics.

Great Teacher Produces Amazing Results

It is so important to note that even after a few sessions, Tabitha was able to improve the fluency and comprehension for my nephew. He actually got excited to read and felt more confident in his abilities. Not every teacher can do that. If you have the chance to work with her, you should absolutely take it.

Tabitha

Tabitha is stern and kind. She makes sure my son stays on task. She has been a good fit for us. My son’s teacher in school says that he has been trying to apply what he is learning into his school work.
