Hi, I’m Starlyte. I graduated from Columbia University in the City of New York. I have a passion for teaching, mentoring, and empowering students to achieve their goals. My mission is to provide tailored support, connect you with the right resources, and address key gaps in understanding. I create a safe, supportive environment where you’re encouraged to ask questions, think critically, and develop problem-solving skills that extend beyond the classroom.

I equip students with the academic foundation, mindset and strategy needed to excel on standardized tests: SAT, ACT, ISEE, PSAT, GED, SHSAT, SSAT, and TACHS. I also help students tackle challenging problems with clarity and confidence in courses (e.g. Algebra 1 and Public Speaking). As President of Columbia’s Model Congress Debate Team, I learned how to coach others. I adapt my teaching approach to meet the unique needs of each person, ensuring they feel confident and capable in their academic journey.

Social Sciences: I hold a Bachelor of Arts in Psychology from Columbia University, with a focus on areas including the Unconscious Mind, Social Cognition and Emotion, Personality Development, and Behavior. I'm excited to share the study methods and learning techniques that helped me reach success.

Proofreader: As an editor, columnist, and writing tutor for Journal of Global Health and CUMC Political Magazine, I’ve honed my ability to craft clear, compelling, and impactful written work. I also excelled in Literature Humanities, Contemporary Civilizations, and University Writing. Whether you’re a novice or a professional, I’ll help you sharpen your ideas and elevate your writing.

AP Biology: I completed pre-medical requirements and gained hands-on experience as a research assistant in Columbia’s Epilepsy Center and Neurobiology Labs. My deep understanding of Biology, combined with practical insights from my research, allows me to break down complex concepts into digestible, relatable lessons.

Let’s work together to unlock your full potential!

Art History

Art History

I love Art History. As an AP Art History student, I enjoyed learning about different cultures through art, writing about scholarly interpretations and ongoing debates, and visiting masterpieces at nearby museums (The MET, Guggenheim, and Cloisters). I carried this same enthusiasm into college as I took a number of courses including African Art, Indian Art, and Masterpieces of Western Art and Architecture. I will help you write clearly, read carefully, and develop an understanding of the past through the visual expressions that members of ancient societies have left behind.
Biology

Biology

As a Pre-Medical student, I have been trained in Molecular Biology, Neurobiology, and Biochemistry. Biology can be an overwhelming subject because of the massive amount of information we are expected to absorb. My strategy, therefore, is to teach students how to process the material and to break down complex ideas into smaller, understandable concepts and patterns. By sharing the strategies that I have developed through my own trial and error study processes, I will equip you with the skills you need to master the material.
Elementary (K-6th)

Elementary (K-6th)

For the past 5 years, I have tutored elementary students in reading, math, and study skills. Through one-on-one lessons, I have helped K-6th graders reach the appropriate reading and math levels. My teaching method is to incorporate critical thinking problems, worksheets, and homework into each lesson. I am here to help students reach their full potentials.
English

English

I am a native English speaker, and have tutored a number of students in SAT Critical Reading, SAT Writing, ACT English, and ACT Writing. Vocabulary, grammar, and spelling play a significant part in both academic and professional success. I tailor lessons to students' specific objectives, levels of proficiency, and learning styles. I work to instill fundamental rules, reinforced by examples, that will allow students to achieve mastery of the subject. As an editor, I will proofread your pieces (college admissions essays, lab reports, professional writing) in order to ensure that your ideas are best communicated to the reader. I will also help you create cover letters and resumes, highlighting your strengths and experiences.
ISEE

ISEE

I enjoy helping students reach their full potentials. I've tutored multiple students so that they can excel in their ISEE preparation. My students have scored high on their exams, and even thanked me in the positive reviews left on my Wyzant page (and 5 star lessons).
PSAT

PSAT

To prepare students for the PSAT, SAT, and ACT, I teach by using sample problems that are similar to the test questions. This allows me to identify weak points of understanding, so that I may teach the appropriate subject matter (grammar, vocabulary, math concepts). My goal is to ensure mastery of the material and strong performance on the easy, medium, and difficult sections of the test. I not only teach students the important underlying concepts, but also teach them how to take the test. By perfecting timing strategies, process of elimination, and identification of themes, I enable students to maximize their scores.
Psychology

Psychology

As a Psychology major, I gained experience in studying for a variety of subjects including Animal Behavior, Evolution of Cognition, and Personality Development. I will share with you a variety of methods to help you remember the information. I am dedicated to teaching you how to spot the most important details in your readings, how to create organized study summaries, and how to draw diagrams that will allow you to process and retain the material.
Public Speaking

Public Speaking

Debate is a passion of mine. In high school, I served as President of The Horace Mann Model Congress Debate Team. In college, I held the position of President of The Columbia University Model Congress Debate Team for two years. I genuinely enjoy forming arguments, finding evidence, and writing speeches. I have coached students in debate, formal presentation, and conducting conversations (conference talks). I encourage students to find their own voices, utilize available resources, and practice the material until they are confident with their messages. For many of us, public speaking is a nerve-racking challenge. I will guide you through the processes of research, writing, and speaking (grammar, pacing, style) in order to help you become an informative, intriguing, and persuasive speaker.
Study Skills

Study Skills

As a tutor for over seven years, I have taught students both what to learn and how to learn. I will show you core strategies for taking tests, keeping notes, and processing information. Practicing good organization and time management will make it easier for you to recall information, comprehend material, and improve academic performance. Let me help you develop these fundamental skills to give you an academic boost!
