Tutoring in all areas of Science, Technology, Engineering, and Math (STEM).

Let exploration and creativity inspire a passion for education. I can make math and science come alive. Bring back the joy to education. Currently seeking only students committed for at least a semester. Many referrals come from siblings.

My undergrad degree is in Aero/Astro Engineering with a focus on rocketry and spacecraft. My Air Force career included ICBMs and nuclear safety. I teach model rocketry workshops and am a member of the Albuquerque Rocket Society with a Level 2 high power certification. My grad degree is in Systems Engineering with a focus on electronics. I have been teaching science and technology courses with a private school since retiring from the military in 1999. My main goals in tutoring are seeing students take joy in learning, completing assignments with excellence, and developing a vision for a rewarding career.

Learning a programming language is best done with an application like a microcontroller. I tutor BASIC Stamp, Arduino, MSP430, Raspberry Pi, and PIC microcontrollers. Python is now the #1 programming language. Raspberry Pi projects are coded in Python, C++, and Java.

Approved Subjects

Calculus

Calculus

Aero/Astro Engineering BS and Systems Engineering MS required Calc 3, Advanced Calc, and Diff Eq. Application of these math areas was more valuable than the math classes themselves. Using the math provides greater understanding and skill development. I currently teach advanced rocketry and electronics, both of which offer great applications for calculus.
Chemistry

Chemistry

I completed college chemistry including organic chemistry while pursuing my BS in Aero/Astro Engineering at the University of IL. I taught high school chemistry at a private school after retiring from the Air Force. I developed the curriculum and labs for the chemistry class. I teach Model Rocketry as applied science that includes chemistry of rocket motors.
Computer Programming

Computer Programming

I took Fortran in high school. I took Pascal and COBOL (COmmon Business-Oriented Language) in college. I am self taught in DOS (Disk Operating System) and BASIC (Beginner's All-purpose Symbolic Instruction Code) from the 1980s when PCs were first introduced. I use assembly language and C++ in programming microprocessors - BASIC Stamp, PIC, TI MSP430, Arduino, Raspberry Pi. I am an active programmer and teach programming in my microcontrollers class. I emphasize learning through observation and hands-on activities. Have recently tutored in MATLAB and Scilab.
Differential Equations

Differential Equations

I took diff eq in college in my undergrad degree and used diff eq throughout my masters in systems engineering in courses such as numerical methods digital computation. Diff eq is perfect for implementing numerical solutions in computer programming. I did a special project with compiling a diff eq solution to orbital mechanics. Diff eq is one of the most useful forms of math in engineering. My tutoring method is to help the student see the process, not just provide an answer. So I ask a lot of questions and allow the student to discover for him/herself.
Electrical Engineering

Electrical Engineering

I have an MS in Systems Engineering with concentration in electrical, and one year of electrical engineering prerequisites to bridge from Aero/Astro BS. I currently teach electronics and microcontrollers. I coach Science Olympiad electronics. The curriculum includes discrete components and circuit analysis through microprocessors and basic programming skills. I can teach the relationship of calculus and differential equations to electronics for qualified students. I integrate electronics material into an auto-mech syllabus and rocketry syllabus. I have electronics lab environment for hands-on learning.
GED

GED

I have been teaching Science, Technology, Engineering, and Math (STEM) subjects at a private school since retiring from the Air Force in 1999. I worked as an engineer and project manager in the Air Force for 20 years. I also taught mid-high literature and history for a few years after retirement. I work with students on motivation and skill development.
Guitar

Guitar

I learned guitar when I was in 7th grade. I have led youth groups and adult groups with guitar for 45 years. I have tutored various students in guitar. I took a music theory course in college. Singing and guitar have always gone together. I can sight read singing and guitar. I sing in two quartets. I teach a combination of fingering, chords, strumming, sight reading, and motivation with various venues. Bluegrass is my favorite but will teach most any kind of music the student enjoys. My teaching method is participation with measurable improvement.
Linux

Linux

I teach electronics and set up a computer lab with Linux. I have a novel approach for tutoring Linux. Take your pick from Debian, Fedora, Ubuntu, or Mint and get a computer on-loan in your home while you learn it. Want to try Linux but don't know where to start and don't want to make an investment in case you don't like it? My goal is to make Linux-based OS computers accessible, user friendly, and functional for the average user. I can tutor the Linux-computer interface, various Linux-based systems, and application to microprocessors.
Microsoft Project

Microsoft Project

I served as a project manager in the Air Force for several multi-million dollar projects. I used MS Project in managing MX Missile development, Cruise Missile development and deployment, F-16 Engine safety modifications, development of a water-activated parachute release device, and Peacekeeper/Minuteman Missile nuclear modifications. In reviewing the MS Project online tutorials, the presenter states he is not a project manager. I think tutoring MS Project is enhanced by first-hand project management and including project management skills.
Precalculus

Precalculus

I took calculus, differential equations, and advanced calculus in college. I have taught high school science classes since 1996 that include pre-calc math. I have taught pre-calc math to my three children. I enjoy pre-calc math and use it regularly in model rocketry calculations.
Study Skills

Study Skills

I have taught various subjects at a private school since 1996. I work with each student to develop a purpose and motivation for education that enhances their study skills. Focusing is a particularly difficult issue when trying to study. When I have students with difficulty focusing, I emphasize hands-on activities. I learn the length of attention span and work on expanding it. Switching subjects at the end of each attention span also gets things done. There are hundreds of tips for improving study skills. Identify about a dozen that are applicable and work on those, improve study habits, and measure improvement. Organization skills allow a student to break class and homework assignments into subtasks and use time efficiently to complete those assignments, save and store graded papers and handouts for later retrieval, regularly review class notes and course readings, and practice effective study techniques. Work on each goal with measurable rubrics. I am a retired US Air Force Major and have been teaching at a private school since 1999. I have worked with students who were easily distracted and needed assistance with study skills. I have the patience to teach and interact with students and parents while focusing on their goal for education. I have three children - one with a graduate degree, one with a business degree, and one in high school. I want students to succeed and offer many hands-on activities to enhance their learning experience. I currently teach applied science classes as science credit - auto mechanics, electronics, and rocketry. I started NM Science Foundation to emphasize "learning through observation."

Patient Tutor Who Really Preps for Lessons

I've historically had a lot of trouble with many of my electrical engineering classes. I've gone through several tutors in the past but always ran into one of three issues: they were impatient, not knowledgeable, or they were so comfortable with the material that they were unable to understand why I was having trouble and couldn't break things down. Mark has been incredible in each of these areas. I'd recommend him to any student, whether you're having trouble or just need to push yourself to that next level. I'm an EE student but I know he has several areas of expertise and can break things down effectively. It's also worth noting that he will typically ask me what I'd like to work on for my next lesson and look through my book to prepare ahead of time. He's also one of the only tutors I've worked with who will send me various links throughout the week to help me in areas I'm weakest at. He's the real deal.

amazing teacher!

Mark is simply fabulous as a teacher. I was amazed when in the first session, when he introduced something as complex as schrodinger’s equation’s theory and split experiment to my seventh grader son in such a simple way that anyone can understand. If you want someone who can go beyond conventional tutoring and genuinely develop a student’s interest in STEM, Mark is your man.

Very Knowledgable

I have had only a few lessons with Mark, but he has expanded my knowledge with working with python, and basic electronics understanding. Even though the guy knows more about these subjects, and more, than i will ever be able to, he does not mind answering the most basic of questions. Very passionate about all types of science, and actually lives it. Worth every dollar.
