In August of 2015, I was conferred with my Master's Degree in Education, from William Paterson University with a focus on being a Teacher of Students with Disabilities. Currently and for the past several years, I have held the role of lead general education teacher in a classroom, although I am dually certified. I have been a tutor and teacher for several years and I have a number of testimonials from my students and their parents. I have worked at a private tutoring center, as well. I take tutoring very seriously and to that end, I spend countless hours planning my student's individualized lessons. Each lesson is tailored to the specific need of each student. If we are reading a book, I have read it first and both the review questions and vocabulary selection are designed to strengthen weaknesses in a specific area. I produce the review sheets. For my SAT students (especially), I create what I call Visual Vocabulary where I attach imagery, where possible, to pump life into those rarely seen and heard SAT words. I talk the talk with my students by using the words with them and encouraging them to use them both in written and spoken form, thus making them their own. Knowledge of grammar is one of my specialties, in addition to being a Dyslexia specialist and Orton-Gillingham practitioner.

The wisdom of my life experiences coupled with my academic achievements and my youthful vigor make me a perfect candidate to tutor your child. My background of entertainment industry production and corporate communications makes ideal to reaching hard-to-reach kids. Raising two sons, both of whom are achieving academic success, is a hallmark of my approach to sharing my knowledge. Parents reading to your young children is a MUST! For older children, verbal communication on current events on an ongoing basis will build their background knowledge which is key to reading comprehension and the ability to inference.

In addition to tutoring students in specific subject areas, I also teach my students to search out

Reading is required for success in every area of school and life. I have the tools and training to take your child(ren) to the top of their potential. I start with baseline testing to see where they are and then monitor their progress with a flow chart. I teach my students to build up their reading skills one step at a time with a multi-sensory, systematic, sequential approach. If they have trouble decoding, which is often a barrier to fluency, I am able to introduce letter sounds and phonics while building their background knowledge.

SAT writing and reading go hand in hand. My approach to teaching struggling readers and writers is a very multi-sensory, systematic, sequential, hands-on one, with a proven success rate. I teach my students how to digest text blocks in order to quickly assess the key points. Repetition and use of new vocabulary words in everyday dialogue with friends and family is another way to make it stick. Finally, I try to interest my students in books that they are interested in reading because the more they read, the better they will read AND write.

Dyslexia

I am a teacher certified by the Fairleigh Dickinson university Dyslexia Studies program to teach children and adults with specific learning disability also known as dyslexia. This is my area of expertise and I have tutored multiple students and achieved successful improvement on their reading and writing bringing them to grade level and beyond. I also am able to assess potentially dyslexic students and provide information on what a students' weaknesses potentially are. I love my work teaching my students to retrain their brains through multisensory, systematic, sequential approach to learning phonemes, affixes, roots and structural analysis. Once mastered students have tools to help them to read better. They also have tools for word attack when meeting unfamiliar words through adulthood.

Deirdre helps us understand the challenges

Even though she has been our tutor for a short time, she has helped us recognize where our child's specific challenges are and is willing to collaborate with teachers to help our child overcome the adversity.

Super Tutor

I started graduate school in July of 2014 and had searched for a tutor on WyzAnt. My first tutor that I worked with was not a great fit, however when I went through the data base again to find another tutor to meet my needs, Deirdre's name came up and right away I wrote her asking her if she was available to work with me. I have worked with Deirdre W for almost a year now and she is a very patient but tough tutor. Her toughness is to encourage you to do your best and to look at your weaknesses to see how to strengthen them. I would highly recommend Deirdre for any student who is committed to learning and improving study skills not only for school but for the next half of your academic life to carry you through to your future work life.

Very helpful

Deirdre is a great tutor! My son needed to master his writing skills, and Deirdre helped him to believe in his own abilities and step out of the "formal" writing habit. She teaches him how to became a creative writer and think "out of the box". From my son: "Deirdre teaches me differently from my other teachers and previous tutors. She doesn't stick to the old formality but lets me express my ideas and beliefs in the form of an essay or story. Ever since Deirdre became my tutor I was more able to think freely and creatively."

Very responsive, tailors instruction, connects well with children

My son is already saying how much the tutoring is helping him get on track over the summer. He is more positive about his capabilities in approaching the new school year. He really likes "Miss Deirdre", and she works very hard in preparing materials that will specifically benefit him. This is impressive given how reluctant he has been to practice writing skills. She also has helped in developing ideas for his educational plan once he re-enters school in the fall. UPDATE: My son's teacher has noted how well his writing is progressing. He has gone up from a C- to a B+ between last spring and this fall. This was one of the wisest investments in our child's growth possible. Ms. Deirdre is truly in tune with his needs.

Great tutor - connected easily with our child!

Deirdre has been working with our child for about six weeks, and she has been immensely helpful in building structure for our son's summer. She immediately and easily built rapport with our son, which was critical in getting him to start in on the Orton Gillingham program. Deirdre was able to relate to his interests (sports, history) and engage him in a balanced fashion that keeps high focus progressing through their sessions. Our son is re-learning basic rules that have been taken for granted in the classroom but which he had not mastered. Deirdre communicates well with us as parents, and scheduling sessions has been easy. We appreciate the progress she is making with our son and are making arrangements to work with Deirdre during the school year.

Takes the Time to Work on the Basics

I am pleased that Deidre has taken the time to work with my granddaughter on the basics of grammar and sentence structure. I also believe that my granddaughter is finally putting everything together and it is all beginning to make sense to her as she puts it into practice during her writing.

Tutor responded:

Your influence in your granddaughter's life is paramount to the success of my tutoring her. Thank you for your kind words and for entrusting her to me for remediation. She is making good progress but we just need to maintain consistency in order for her to hold on to what I am teaching her.

Great Tutor, prepared, patient, and very professional

Ms. D, as my children call her, is a professional who "makes a difference". She's a great tutor who has helped my children immensely since we met her a year ago. My children have progressed from not knowing all the letters of the alphabet to reading their first books confidently within a year of hard - consistent work with Ms.D. The children enjoy the interesting and well planned classes she presents each week. My girls are both very enthusiastic about their classes each week. I'm very pleased with the results, even though when they first started I sincerely didn't see they would reach the stage they are in now. I hope I can keep Ms. D with us so she can continue her exceptional work helping my twins as they move on.

Huge help.

Deirdre has helped our daughter so much with her spelling, writing and reading. Her tutoring is very methodical and goes step by step so my daughter can build upon what she has learned. She holds our daughter accountable for her work and also keeps it fun with entertaining material. We are very grateful for the help Deirdre has provided our daughter and we have seen steady progress in the areas where she needs help.

Deirdre W. is an extraordinary tutor.

I am so happy to have found such an enthusiastic and patient tutor in Deirdre. I was very impressed that at our very first session she came well prepared with material for my son to practice with. Deirdre has the ability to quickly and accurately determine the sources of a child's learning difficulties. In the case of my son, this allowed her to set up an individually tailored program and work through issues one at a time. Deirdre has been very impactful with helping my son master the skills he will need to learn how to successfully read. I give Deirdre my highest recommendation as a tutor.
