Hi! My name is Ian. I'm a graduate of Rutgers University having majored in Electrical Engineering. My early affinity for math led me to a STEM high school where I took many honors and AP math classes graduating with a 3.99 GPA. Some of the courses I took during this time include: Geometry, Algebra 2, Precalculus and AP Calculus, Linear Algebra, Discrete Math and Statistics. During high school I took the SAT, SAT Math II, and ACT in which I scored a 790 on the SAT Math I and Math II and a 35 on ACT Math respectively. I specialize in tutoring middle school level math, high school level math and SAT and ACT math.
As a recent student, I understand how new topics and concepts can seem daunting and how time pressure when taking tests (esp. SAT and ACT) can affect performance. My aim is break down complicated problems into simple terms as efficiently as possible. I don't try to assume what a student may or may not already know and instead ask them how they would approach the problem first, unless they are stuck in which case I try to point to clues that will lead them to solve the answer. I also point out that for many math concepts there are multiple ways to reach the answer, so I encourage students to consider different ways to solve problems rather than robotically trying to solve problems because it may be easier or faster by approaching a problem systematically (it also prepares them for problems they have not seen before). This leads me to another aspect of my teaching style. I like to emphasize the importance of test taking skills to my students. Eliminating mistakes and gaining confidence when taking a test can make all the difference when preparing for the next algebra test or the SAT.
I've been a tutor for over a year teaching primarily elementary and middle school math. I'm very patient and wish to help students in any way I can. I'm also open to any suggestions from parents and students. Feel free to contact me, I will respond quickly!
